Sea Lions Cut Free from Garbage

- The Vancouver Aquarium's veterinarian, Dr. Martin Haulena, aims his gun at a California sea lion. But instead of bullets, it's loaded with tranquilizer darts.
Dr. Haulena, along with the Aquarium's veterinary team and marine mammal consulting biologist Wendy Szaniszlo, spent a day on the west coast of Vancouver Island (Barkley-Clayoquot region) in October 2013, looking for entangled sea lions. On this day, they saw nine entangled sea lions. They were able to disentangle two California sea lions after safely sedating them and cutting the plastic fish-packing straps they had around their necks.
This mission was done in partnership with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Parks Canada, Brian Gisborne of Juan de Fuca Express and the Canadian Wildlife Federation.
In 2011, the Aquarium rescued "Flash," a California sea lion that had ingested four feet of fishing equipment. After his rehabilitation at the Aquarium's Marine Mammal Rescue Centre, Flash was successfully released back to his home waters. The Rescue Centre is currently caring for a rescued sea otter suffering from gunshot wounds.

I watch Ocean Conversation Namibia all the time. They help Cape Fur Seals that are entangled. As these are much smaller than Sea Lions, they run in and catch them by hand, or with a net, cut the entanglement away and the seal heads back into the ocean with minimal trauma from the event and feeling so much better.

I started following Ocean Conservation Namibia. They do the same kind of work. Thank you for rescuing the seals. People must stop allowing garbage to be tossed into the sea.

They are doing this with seals in Namibia except they
use a net instead of a dart gun.
They are on a smooth beach, not rocky.
I wouldn't want to hold down one of those sea lions with my bare hands
@@eyescreamcake the ones in Namibia are not this big. Mostly pups. The net has a zipper to open part ways to cut.
I watch Naude and his crew too saving the seals. A lot smaller than these guys.

OMG! These poor mammals suffering because of humankind. This video, even though it is seven years old, highlights just one of the multitudes of problems faced by so many innocent mammals, animals and birds. I appreciate this video, although it was shocking and upsetting to watch. Thank you VanAqua, as well as MMRC, for ALL of the work you do. I am only now becoming aware of the great work you people do, thanks in part to the adorable rescue sea otter named Joey 💗

I am a hunter (though not a professional, whatever that means) and I know many, many hunters. I don't know a single one who wouldn't be thrilled to be allowed to participate in a conservation effort like this. Hunters love nature, and in the US we are by far the largest source of money for conservation (both via taxes requested by hunters and anglers and through voluntary contributions, to the tune of $1.2B per year). The thing is, we're not marine veterinarians (or at least most of us aren't).

-nah, not much formal preparation is needed. the guys at Conservation Namibia aren't vets; they've saved hundreds of seals already. check their youtube channel

@@IRosamelia Naude from OCN has stated over and over that he can't use tranquilizers for various reasons. There's no way they'd be tackling a sea lion of this size either - they pretty much top out at around 150kg with their fur seals for safety reasons.
Another complication is location - there aren't too many seals where I'm at and entanglements aren't a significant issue in the Great Lakes. That said, who do you think it is who helps when two bucks get locked together or when an elk falls into an icy pond and gets stuck? It's the people who are actually out in nature doing things, like hunters.

I 100% agree, however the things that are tangling around so many animals are from fishing nets and wires not a plastic water bottles. I agree non reusable plastic should be banned, it would be better plastic was banned indefinite but that won't happen.
