SHARK stuck in Seal's Neck!

  • The mystery is finally solved! Over the last few weeks, Naude and Denzil have rescues 2 seals with what they thought were stingray spikes sticking out of their necks. A little while ago they came across this guy on the beach, and they finally had an answer.
This young male cape fur seal had a complete young St. Joseph Shark hanging from his neck! The St. Joseph shark is a member of the chimera family, and is very similar the the ratfish found in the United States. The shark has a large poisonous barb extending through its dorsal fin, and it is this thats getting stuck in the seals.
The fur seals don't usually hunt this species, but because of the big die-off of seals we had due to starvation, the seals are getting desperate and targeting fish they would not usually for. While trying to break up the sharks into bite size chunks on the surface, they are getting "spiked", and because of the one-way bards on those spikes, they often break off and stay there.
As soon as this seal was freed to proceeded to catch a much bigger seal in their net. This seal was stuck in thick commercial fishing line, but luckily was freed by the rescuers. 🦭

I love some of the flabbergasted looks of relief and surprise the seals give when you let them go. They're so use to possibly "when we get caught, we're dead by any animal" that one actually catches them, helps them, AND lets them go.
They're stunned like "W-wait, why do i feel better? W-why did you let me go? Huh, t-this...this is new." So wholesome.

I don't think that's accurate. I think animals know that humans really are supposed to help them but they know that humans have betrayed them and thus they are surprised to find humans doing what they should be doing. That's why animals who have never encountered humans come to them willingly and without fear because we are distinctly different from them and meant to be care takers of this world.

What you're saying makes sense in concept, but that's not the reality of it. If anything, accidental human intervention with all the pollution in our waters cuts seal numbers down. A perfect example is in this video with the fishing line. That seal wouldn't have been in danger in the first place if it didn't get that fishing line wrapped around it. Humans saving seals isn't causing the lack of food for them. It's both natural causes and human's polluting and destroying their feeding grounds. @@interestedparty00

I might be wrong but I think it’s a money/convenience thing, it’s easier and cheaper to cut and dump them than it is to recover and repair them, so they just cut them, it’s very common worldwide and it’s a major source of plastic in the ocean… not to mention tangling up everything

Most fishermen try to recover their tackle and only cut / break the line as a last resort. We pay good money for weights, swivels, hooks, and other tackle and don’t like losing it. Sometimes you can catch a fish and it will tangle you up in something on the bottom. You can’t get it free and end up breaking the line. If the fish is still on the other end this is sometimes how the seal ends up getting tangled. It goes after the fish. Not only did we lose money in our gear, but we lost our dinner too. Every time someone sees an animal in distress like this they automatically think and blame the fishermen. It’s rarely the fishermen’s fault. I’m not saying that there aren’t cases where some idiot tosses line in the water. But most of the time it can’t be helped.

We have been advised by leading pinniped specialists that, unless we are able to keep the animal in a sanctuary for rehabilitation, we should avoid applying medicines on their wounds. The Cape fur seal goes straight to the water as soon as we release them, washing off any topical cream. Water resistant sprays may lock in bacteria and aggravate their injuries.
We do not want to introduce drugs in a population of wild animals. We see healthy recaptures every single day, proof that sea water acts as a very efficient wound cleaner and healer, and that Cape fur seals are extremely resilient animals.

Young animals usually have to be taught for a while to be scared of humans. You can see how deeply ingrained it is into the bigger, older seal. The first one probably didn't see humans as as big of a threat, and when they made the pain stop, that totally fucked its perception of reality. I can't even imagine what was going through its brain after that, but going off its body language, it didn't seem scared.
