  • On 9 Aug 2004 a herd of female and young sperm whales, entangled in an illegal drifting for swordfish, is rescued by divers of the Italian Coast Guard. After two days of work, all whales are released alive. Video by the Coast Guard of Naples. Editing by Oceanomare Delphis Onlus.

    The most impressive thing is that these GIGANTIC wild animals that have had limited exposure to humans held still and didn't fight or try to flee. They recognized that they were trying to help. ❤

      Usually whale rescuers are men. Most women do not have the physical strength required for the work and are not hard wired to take the risks necessary for the work. It really is men's work. That's just how it is. I hope I marry a man who does this sort of work personally. Sincerely, a realistic and rational woman.

      The members of the Italian Coast Guard are really underappreciated even here in Italy: they help people in danger, protect the enviroment from polluters and illegal fishing, fight smugglers and drug traders...but since they also help adrift refugees and migrants a lot of people insult and criticizes them.

      Yeah, very dangerous rescue. Sperm whales can stun and even kill you with their sonar. Just them wanting to get a good look at you could be fatal... the sound is so powerful, it can vibrate you to death. A researcher once tried to push off with one hand against one that got too close, and it stunned his arm so badly that he couldn't move it for 5 hours.

    That is an INCREDIBLE video!!! The BRAVERY of those Italian Coast Guard divers!!! (Because Sperm Whales CAN BE aggressive if they feel threatened, and especially if they have calves...) And yet, at the risk of romantisizing this remarkable episode, it's almost as if the whales KNEW these guys were there to help them... I hope those divers got some kind of award or honour for such TERRIFIC work... WOW! xx SF

      Sperm whales do not eat great whites or people. They eat giant squid, octopus and such. They also know when someone has good or ill intentions toward them. Hence the stories of them attacking whalers yet being completely placid and cooperative when being rescued like this. Sperm whales are my other mates as well as humpbacks. And I really admire the men who do this work. These are real men... kind and masculine at the same time.

    • @janedoex8345
      @janedoex8345 6 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      scanjet1000 Of course not. Im fact there are no record of sperm whales willingly attacking humans, but the risk is not to get hit by their tail flip while they are struggling and trying to free themselves in panic. Luckily they seem to notice they are helped and stop moving too much But it's still risky, one accidential whip from a whales tail could crush a diver instantly. But on many occasions, whales were even cautious and stopped or turned to not run into divers in many encounters. It's amazing these huge animals even "care" enough and willingly tried to avoid to risk harming us tiny strangly swimming beings. They are much bigger so they simply could expect us to move for sure ! There were also cases when whales took humans or other small animals under their pectotal fin to hide and protect them when big sharks were around. Some say it's because they thought the humans being some sort of calfs, but i think they are too intelligent to mistake us for their offspring. We don't look like a calf, we smell and behave different and we don't make any similar noises. But they somehow decided we are worth to be protected anyways....Isn't it amazing?
