It’s a very worthy project for Sri Lankans if they use it in the proper ways

Sick video mate. I love this content. I think we all know how this is going to work out for the Sri Lankans, but I think you make a valid point that it’s no worse than what other global superpowers have done in the past

I think Port City is a brilliant project ..now that all legislative laws are in place and Port City is a dollerized economic zone. What's the big deal about China ? WHO has the largest investments in USA ?
In UK they are all over. Is it wrong only when a developing country draws investments ? No stopping Sri Lanka from now on SL will propell growth. Do you know already 300 ventures are due to commence building including 5 star hotels, a massive state of the art hospital, school built by one of the top ranked universities that are in the top 50 in the world ?

It is going to be a successful project, giving the fact that Sri Lanka’s immediate neighbour India is the 3rd biggest economy, and China the 2nd largest economy not far away, and on the right hand side of Sri Lanka is Singapore and the left Dubai, and Expert Economists have predicted Asian economies will dominate the World, as Sri Lanka is sandwiched between thriving economies the Port city will be successful.

Thank you for covering Colombo. I had once talked to one of their civil war leaders and was very curious of any progress made as he was very enthusiastic and excited at the time.
SEZ are not really tax heavens. For the Chinese for a limited time yes, but it really depends on the deal. We struck a deal with them of tax reduction of 25% for 25 years, and mandatory JV with a Pakistani company at minimum 25% share. Also as we are building the SEZs so essentially the tax subsidy does not extend to any third parties coming from outside. For Sri Lanka it makes sense to do that as they have just gotten out of their financial crisis.
Any business coming to a country helps the economy, only taxes are not indicative of economic progress. In fact, they are always a small niche. Increasing currency circulation, jobs, hell even government spending contributes towards economic prosperity.
We have 14 SEZs in our country and they were desperately needed. The presence of the Chinese ensures that all facilities are provided as well as good security. Not to mention logistic connections. Although we bankrupted ourselves due to corruption so the SEZs are rotting away. But we do not employ the Chinese in large urban developments rather we have them focused towards infrastructure.

This is not an ideal for sri lanka. Port of colombo has faced an issue with shortage of yard facility for containers. Said service will charge more than 20,000$ per day per 40 fleet container. If this space offer for storage of containers , Sri Lanka would earn more per annum. And it will be pure income for Sri Lankan economy . Unfortunately , citizen in Sri Lanka had a lack of knowledge. They were voting for currupted politicians. Singapore and Dubai has a container transhipment hub, unfortunately we lost the opportunity to beat with them. Recently , India had developed a port with less handling cost, which will beat Port of Colombo operation in very sooner.

Most importantly it's protected from local pegged currency

This was good up until you accused the US of only using hard power - quite strange that you ignore all the money they spend on soft power, including things like helping places like Sri Lanka run elections and maintain important democratic and civic institiutions, and tying financial investment and aid to these (things China cares nothing for). Talk to Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan etc to find out if China has a reputation for hard power. Switched my thumbs up to a down for this reason.
