    I am not quite sure why people think that "Modernity" is the apex of civilization. My parents grew up in a Sri Lanka which would be considered "backward". They lived in low slung bungalows with afternoon tea. Doors were always open for friends and visitors to drop by for a chat. The literacy rate was very high, one of the highest in Asia, schooling was free to the university level as was healthcare. Not yet a consumer culture, nor one of high rise buildings but one filled with seething and rich human interactions.

    Videos like this is a bit deceiving. Colombo is not clean. There is garbage everywhere. There is quite a bit of new buildings popping up, but street level is not getting renovated. And when it is, it takes years to fix a simple pavement. There will literally be a pile of bricks laying around for years until the work is complete. Infrastructure in general is not great. As for littering, it was better a couple of years ago, as they had a "Green Police" that fined people for littering. The same president who started the department is the same president who bankrupted and stole all the money along with his brother. So there is that. Having no recycling system, open sewage and hardly any garbage collection, it is not a clean city. It does look pretty at night, but not in the daytime. I'll say this though, it is pretty safe. I've never had any problem with people in general even though it's a relatively poor country. Rural areas are better in general, and the countryside is pretty for the most part, but wherever there is some kind of settlement, there is always garbage floating around. However, nowhere near as much as India. And, for all I've said, there's plenty of positive things to say about Sri Lanka other than the negative stuff I just mentioned. I do recommend spending a holiday in Sri Lanka, but don't expect a clean paradise other than in a hotel or guesthouse.

    • @WilliamLi-nd4lz
      @WilliamLi-nd4lz วันที่ผ่านมา

      Colombo is clean, its genuinely clean even when you compared to south east asian countries and some cities in china. Im from Vietnam, and compared to our capita, colombo is pretty clean all right.
      Sri Lanka is a poor country as it is classified as a lower middle income country. What are you on about open Sewage? thats a genuinely false statement, sewege is treated in sewege treatment plants. Although recycling is not mass executed there is are certain regional organisations that does it. Most of the trash it dumped into landfills which are a good distant away from cities. For instance, if you head near the sri lankan parliment where they have tons of canals and stuff you would find them to be clean and have uncontaminated water.
      You seem to know a lot about Sri Lanka. Are you Sri Lankan or did you spend a lot of time there?

    • @Suspended.Solitude
      @Suspended.Solitude วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@WilliamLi-nd4lz
      I'm not making up stuff, if that's what you think. Open sewage is indeed real, and there is nothing false about it. I have absolutely nothing to gain by giving this information to people.
      Colombo might be clean compared to larger cities in Vietnam, like Saigon or Manila in the Philippines, but by no means is Colombo clean. There are, of course, some clean areas, mainly business areas, recreation areas or tourist areas. Some areas are better than others, but overall, there is litter wherever you go.
      As for open sewage, as you questioned, the wastewater management in Sri Lanka is abysmal. It is important to inform people of this, because you can get utterly sick from sewage pollution.
      Most of the sewage is sent in pipes, rivers and streams straight into the sea. The pipes are laid far away from land, but it's not treated at all. Don't kid yourself if you don't think this is common in most other countries. I live in Norway, one of the most developed countries in the world, and the municipality next to mine, across from the fjord I live in, does exactly the same. They have a main pipe, with all the untreated sewage from the city collected in one giant pipe and then pumped into the middle of the fjord. The municipality does this because it is cheaper to get a fine from the government than building a proper sewage plant. This is pretty common in Asia, particularly coastal cities in Sri Lanka. Sometimes you can see the pipes stopping at the shore, and just pumping out crap, because the municipality can't afford to lay pipe into the ocean.
      If I want to go to the beach and have a swim, I always stay away from a beach that has a river or stream running into it nearby, as it will most likely be polluted, unless you are in a national park or close to one.
      Sewage connections are only available for certain areas in Colombo, meaning wealthy residential areas and business areas. Some people have septic tanks that get emptied, and that stuff is treated. Most wastewater is not treated. Blackwater (from toilets) is sometimes treated, but greywater (water from shower and sinks) is almost not treated at all. There are areas in Colombo with closed sewage and proper manholes, but that is certainly not the standard. If there is a high-rise building nearby, then most likely there is proper sewage. As for the rest of the residential areas in the city, the sewage is indeed open. By open, I mean that there are ditches dug next to the streets which are covered with cement lids, but the lids have large holes in them to let the gases out. That's along the streets where you walk. There are other ditches too that run inbetween buildings, which are not often seen, and they are indeed open, and not covered at all. There is one right next door ro my wife's house in Colombo, through the neighbour's plot. They are very common.
      A quick Google search tells me that 3% of rural sewage is treated, and 12% of urban areas discharge wastewater (black and grey) into sewage for treatment. Most of the aforementioned trenches and ditches does not go to a water filtration plant. They run into rivers, streams, lakes and the sea. Most of it goes into a stream and then into the sea. Every open water source in Colombo is polluted by sewage, just so you know.
      When the parliament was taken over about a year ago or so, they threw many of the politicians into the nearby lake outside of the parliament. Most of them got sick because the water is contaminated by sewage. There are many clips on TH-cam, you should check it out. When asked if they can have something to drink, they are served cups of tea while standing in the brown water of the lake.
      Never, ever should you drink form a stream, a lake or wash your clothes in it for that matter, unless you are living in the highlands or Sri Lanka, like Nuwara Elia, Hatton or the Knuckles mountain range. Lowland and coastal water is the most polluted. This stuff goes into the groundwater and contaminates drinking wells too. If you're in an area that has been flooded, the open sewage spills into the streets, and there will be sewage in the water 100%.

    Colombo is a 1-2 days destination. There is nothing to do, nothing to see. For most part, there is also nowhere to walk to since the lack and state of sidewalks. Gas fumes are literally a health hazard. Food is average at best and overpriced compared to rest of country.

      For Indians it's bit expensive

      @@dilshanNaetothe problem is that Sri Lanka is not a good value for money at all. Everything is pretty much European prices - groceries, restaurants, services…and you go to Thailand, Indonesia, and you get much more for the same money. You go to Vietnam, and you literally pay 1/3 of what you spend in Sri Lanka and also get more for your money.

      @@kubowich Then go there lmao no one is stopping you. Sri Lanka looks like an awesome destination for me personally after seeing this guys video. I was in India 2 years ago and it was incredibly polluted and unhygienic compared to what I see in this video which is like a borderline developed country with uncluttered tourism. Definitely my next holiday spot in this December winter season.

      @@hoehoe360there is nothing goated about Nightlife in CMB…the city is dead by 11PM. And it is not “more expensive”, it is simply overpriced. In Bangkok, Saigon or Kuala Lumpur you get so much more options and for half the prices.
