These countries may be forced to handover territory to China which will in turn become Chinese military bases in future. Just read about European countries that have taken massive reconstruction loans from USA soon after second world war and about the list of US military bases in Europe. China could be following the 'American Way'.
To the people who are talking nonsense about this project; First, this is not a Chinese loan, Sri Lanka will not payback any single dollar spent by the CHEC because this is an FDI project (US $ 1.4 billion). CHEC will lease the part of the land to other investors to earn profit from the project. Sri Lanka made a rule for construction workers as 60% of local workers and 40% foreign workers (or 70% /30% don't remember the details). The whole reclamation area is own by the SL government and from that, nearly 60% of the land was leased to CHEC and the remaining 40% is fully own by the SL government. CHEC is going to invest another US $ 1billion for five high rise buildings as a part of the International financial center including office complexes, residential complexes, and hotels. The agreement was signed a few months back and construction work will be started later this year. Another US $ 4.5 billion worth of investments is already secured for the marina and hotels. The investors from Singapore, South Korea, India, Belgium, and China already showed their interest to invest in this project. For the rising of the sea level, most part of the reclamation land is 2.5 -3 m above from mean sea level, significantly higher than most of the major cities in the world.

Because it's China's great plan. Build big fancy ports around the Indian Ocean, make sure the local governments can never repay the loan, and then take the new port as compensation. At the same time, the governments obviously won't invest in their old existing ports, and so in 10-20 years China controls all ports on the Indian Ocean where the majority of global trade flows.
I'm from Sri Lanka and a fan of your channel. It's an excellent video, but I have to make few small corrections. 1) The port city's land area is under 3 square km, and it's only a tiny fraction of the city of Colombo. So it won't double the city area. 2) Previous projects such as Hambantota port and airport didn't gain much revenue due to their location and also, internal politics played a part. However, port city is located right next to Colombo's financial center, therefore, it has already received so much demand from both local and international investors.

@@arminius6506 you continue wearing Chinese diaper masks in pakistan, saala suar
@DiceKid2008...Countries that are unable to repay the loans from China will inevitably become puppets in the hands of Beijing. These countries may be forced to handover territory to China which will in turn become Chinese military bases in future. Just read about European countries that have taken massive reconstruction loans from USA soon after second world war and about the list of US military bases in Europe. China could be following the 'American Way'.
Indian jealous, carefully. Go to the future, to modern country.
To the people who are talking nonsense about this project;
First, this is not a Chinese loan, Sri Lanka will not payback any single dollar spent by the CHEC because this is an FDI project (US $ 1.4 billion).

The moment I saw the involvement of China, the other two projects flashed before my eyes, and I was wondering why again why... the same route....??
Because it's China's great plan. Build big fancy ports around the Indian Ocean, make sure the local governments can never repay the loan, and then take the new port as compensation. At the same time, the governments obviously won't invest in their old existing ports, and so in 10-20 years China controls all ports on the Indian Ocean where the majority of global trade flows.
China bribes politicians to sanction the projects.

Sounds good 👍. Never mind the sinophobic trols.
Make that Only CCP investors
Unfortunately 1 year later all this turned out be useless. Country is facing the worst economic downturn!! Debt is piling up & china is laughing with Sri Lankan politicians while local people are struggling.
So, essentially, another part of the Belt and Road Initiative.
Nope, this is part of BRI's sister initiative, Maritime Silk Road. Video was a bit misleading.

I've got a good idea. You know how sea levels are rising each year and storm surges are becoming ever more dangerous to coastal areas right. So lets reclaim some land directly in that sea so maximum damage is done in the future. Let's also let China fund everything so when it all goes belly up we can repay by giving the whole area to China for 100 years so they can convert it into a military base to control the tiny choke point between India and Sri Lanka where so much trade passes. Genius.
