I recently just bought a 987.1 cayman and I’ll say that both these cars look great . The Porsche in my opinion looks timeless. That mid engine feel and balance is otherworldly to me. But like I said just my 2¢ as a cayman owner.
Im considering buying one now, anything has change in a year? What about the maintenance cost? I know how to do some minor jobs, like change breaks and oil.
Recently moved to Florida and I'm considering a first gen Cayman for my next car. I really want a convertible top being that it's Florida, but it ruins the look on the 987s. The Cayman looks far better. I would forego the convertible top for the far better aesthetic look of the Cayman.
I think it would add value to discuss running costs. Tires, brakes, maintenance costs, etc. That factors into what I consider great track cars, as lower running costs let me afford more track days 😊
True, I should have spent a couple minutes on this. My 987.1 Cayman S was far more expensive to maintain. 987.2 should be more reliable but still no comparison to a new Japanese car.
I have owned two 987.2 2.9L Caymans. Standard running costs aren't that bad, not all that different to a lot of other sports cars. Luckily I havn't had to do any major jobs done by a specialist or dealer yet.
Tires, Brakes and Oil prices should be fairly close, no specialized parts required for either vehicle. Obviously tracking a 12 year old car could require new suspension parts at some point versus a brand new car.
I would tend to agree with you for the most part. But on the other hand, he does not seem to fully understand what a slip angle is. A slip angle has nothing to do the tail sliding out in an oversteer attitude and therefore having the traction control off is not really going to effect the slip angles one way or the other. Slip angels come about from the fact that the tread of the tire gets distorted as it travels through the contact patch due to the cornering forces acting upon it. If tires were made of a solid inflexible piece of rubber however then there would be no slip angle at all. In any case, once the wheels loose grip and start sliding this is not considered an increase in slip angle. And while we are on the subject, the term “drifting” also arose from a misunderstanding by people (first in Japan) of the racing term “drift” and it eventually just caught on. Drift is a term used to describe a condition in which the car is moving in a direction that is slightly different from the direction the wheels are pointing, although the wheels are still maintaining traction the whole time and are not actually sliding. In Formulae One back in the 70’s there was also a term known as “4-wheel drift”. It was a condition in which you could get the car to steer itself around a curve with the wheels pointed straight ahead. This only worked because the rear tires of the F-1 cars back then operated at much higher slip angles than the front and so the car was basically being steered by the slip angle of the rear tires. Of course today the term “drifting” has incorrectly come to refer to driving a car on asphalt in the same manner that you would normally drive it on a dirt track or in a rally (in an oversteer attitude). And while this is the fastest way to get around a dirt track it is only done on asphalt in order to entertain oneself rather than to get around the course quickly and as such it has no business be referred to as a “motorsport”.
I agree, a review actually about driving them. Lots of reviews go on about things like the dashboard plastics or wheel aesthetics etc. very few actually talk about real keen road driving because maybe those reviewers don’t actually have the driving skill?
I am a PCA national DE instructor, have instructed students in 86’s and driven them on the track. They are ok, but no where in the same league as a cayman/boxster. For the occasional track use, nothing beats a cayman.
With the correct tires and driving technique the porsche can simulate the feel of GR86 to some extent. The real difference is that the porsche can overlap with some of the GR86 strengths BUT the GR86 cannot overlap with the strengths of the porsche. As far as I know, both stock cars are pretty reliable.
YOOOO bro CONGRATUFUCKINLATIONS on getting sponsored I’m so hyped for you you haven’t gotten nearly as much recognition or support as you deserve afaic so I’m glad to see it starting from Avalon King
@@apordonez That sounds like a rare bird though, which would cost considerably more. That is, if one could even find one (I just looked, could not find any for sale)
@@liltuck737 we have 67000 on it now. 35k miles since purchased. No additional maintenance yet. Just tires brakes and rotors. Need new cv boots and it's due for a new serpentine belt and plugs about now. Great car
I have owned both as well. They are incredible to drive in their own way. Can’t knock either car. I enjoy the Cayman’s body lines better and precise handling. It’s like flipping a coin heads or tails either won’t disappoint
Which is better? i have to say, I got to drive a Cayman S at Laguna for a few laps at a driving event and it felt dare I say just a little boring. Composure, grip and no drama. Test drive a used boxster and it felt the same, kinda too much grip for the engine, seemed I’d never have it out on the ragged edge. Can cars be too competent for their own good?
To upgrade Miata suspension to half the body roll, ride better over big bumps, small cracks, reduce up to 20lbs, and longer lasting suspension vs non-Bilstein kits, get MeisterR dampers kits made from solid billet aluminum, adjustable mono tube, tuned assembled in UK. You can ask for additional custom spring rates, all for $1,000
It seems like a lot of the base GR86's praise is all about it's slippery tires. With the Pilot Sports, would the car be less distinguishable from the Porsche in its consistency and predictability?
Had a scion FRS for 3 years leased, then got a 718 cayman S. The FRS felt like a plastic car compare to the cayman, even though both weights around 3000 pounds. The cayman is just on another level in very way.
Literally have this exact problem. I have two deposits down on GR86s (for 7 months...ugh) and I test drove a 987.1S last weekend. Thank you for the video!
@@danparry834 I still think the Cayman is awesome, it just came down to price and availability. The Cayman had to clear more hurdles because I needed to be able to test drive it and get a PPI done. The few that met my preferences and showed up locally were either questionable or overpriced.
Great Video! Funny story, I was shopping for a new GR86 since I had the previous Gen and missed something light and RWD. After being quoted almost 40k for a base GR86 due to Toyota markups I began searching for other cars in that price range. Came across a 981 base Cayman and snagged it. I couldn't be happier with the car, plenty of storage, and super tight steering, and it feels more powerful than the quoted 275hp. The 981 cayman also has many more creature features than the GR86, gets great gas mileage, and is super reliable (even at 72k miles). I just finished driving it over 500 miles averaging 30mpg to a track event and beating the piss out of it. It never skipped a beat. IMO getting a 981 cayman is worth it over the new GR86 when considering all of the ridiculous markups.
I really want an 86, the exterior is phenomenal and it sounds like they nailed the driving dynamics. However I can't get over how low-rent the interior is and the sound is uninspired. I understand they needed to build the car to a budget, but IMO they should have charged an extra $1500 for the premium and ditched all that god awful plastic on the head unit and loaded the interior with Alcantra. VW and Honda can do it, so can Toyobaru. And I'd like to hear one with the fake sound synthesizer removed and a proper exhaust on the car.
This is exactly what I’ve been saying forever. The interior of these cars has always been the deal breaker and it’s one of the reasons I sold my. So incredibly cheap. Understandably so, but still.
@@mainsera4407 i completely disaagree. The interior of the first and secon gen are certainly budget focused but they are designed excellently. Thrn again, Im bias toward older car interiors. The BRZ/86 is super simple, it uses knobs and buttons instead of makkng everything digital, its very clean and tidy in it's layout. It has everything you need but nothing you dont. And yeah, the materials are not fancy but they look and feel like budget materials should. They arent nice but also aren't like they came put of a super low dollar economy car.
@@Bones12x2 They can do both. Sit in an Audi A3, Civic Si, most any Hyundai or VW. The 86 downfall isn't kobs for climate control, it's all the hard plastics that make it look designed by fisher price. It'll still sell well because it drives so good, but there's clearly other people who will pass it up because they're willing to spend a little more for a more premium experience. Hell even a new forester has a better interior so you know that have the capability in house.
There's no way to make the four cylinder sound great. I like the exhaust I have on mine (it's got an "honest" 4-cyl sound to it at a good compromise sound level), but there's no way to make it sound horny in the way a six-cylinder can sound horny.
Your description of the Porsche about how you smile less but able to be more serious and accurate while allowing more power to be put down is how I feel about my sti. Thinking about switching to the gr86
Although subjective I had an 07 sti and can confirm my Boxster is more fun and satisfying to drive without question. I think the the GR86 is a great package and would own it over the 07 sti but they are kinda apples to oranges. Now if you test drove a Cayman or Boxster it might make you change your mind. Good luck both the Porsche and the GR86 are fun sports cars.
keep in mind a new GR86 is going to depreciate much harder and faster than the older Cayman which has already pretty much bottomed out in depreciation ....and the cool factor isn't even a comparison all things being equal a $30K 2022 Toyota is going to cost you more money at the end of the day when it comes time to sell than a used $30K 2009 Cayman even after maintenance cost are factored in.
Just found this channel - what a great review! I was daydreaming about this exact choice recently. The Mighty Algorithm brought us together. Thanks for a thoughtful, well-produced video.
As a biased opinion being a Porsche Cayman owner, the mid engine is what separates the men from the boys. You feel confident and safe when taking any turns most would slow down.
My money will be parked in the superior midship engine coupled on to a manual transmission and a hydraulic steering wheel, that quintessential flat six is a work of German engineering craftsmanship p, it’s worth all the premium and in the next 50 years it’s still a Porsche with an impeccable racing pedigree. This 987.2 is the last generation of analog Porsche before the 981 Cayman with everything electronic/ computerised driving aid, the Cayman is a pure precision driving machine.
Great review as always, having owned previous gen GT86 and driven the Cayman 987.2 and S, the lack of LSD makes a world of a difference! Since the GR86 seems to have a noticable bump in HP, you can always add wider and stickier tires to get grip and enjoy drift events with the Primacy. Adding an LSD to the cayman is very expensive and if you factor overall TCO the GR86 seems to have hit the spot again!
I own a 987.2 2.9L, previously owned a first gen BRZ and a tonne of other sports cars and hot hatches. That engine in that first gen was so horrible, I couldn't wait to get rid of it after a few months of ownership. This new car seems so much better.
So recently had this comparison on the Tail of the Dragon. Ran my 987.1 Cayman S behind a stock new 86. The 86 was able to very slowly pull away from me, but it was also a dragon photographer that's run the road hundreds of times, so I don't feel too bad. Still it shows the new 86 is plenty capable.
@@weed46 I have 4S's and they are pretty grippy. Another dragon photographer drove my Cayman and loved it so much he is selling his Fit and buying one. He's also faster than me, but only in the higher speed corners. I can take the low speed, or constant grip corners at 40-50, but the few that can be taken at full throttle at 60+ I tend to back out of.
Definitely noticeable difference in the rear spring rate. On longer bumpier drives, it is a little uncomfortable - like being lightly shaken for a long time. Great review!
sold a boxster and kept my miata .....fun factor means the most to me, the porsche had no soul, the mx5 has bags of it especially supercharged like mine.
This is a great comparison. I have loved the Cayman (never owned one) since the day they came out, and it's definitely interesting to compare the older car to the new GR86. The GR86 seems like a great new car and will certainly be easier and cheaper to work on and maintain. I imagine the aftermarket for both is probably pretty healthy, but since the Cayman is a Porsche, go fast goodies are probably more expensive by default. I really, really love the Cayman and there's a lot of reasons I'd prefer it, but the practicality of owning a Toyota is a factor that I just cannot ignore. As a second car though? I'd probably choose the Cayman in a heartbeat.
As a Cayman owner: you’ve hit the nail on the head. The Cayman is an incredibly enjoyable car, but the 987 is older. You’re gonna have more problems, whether it be window motors or door handles, or whatever odd piece may wear, and it’s gonna be an expensive fix. I’ve done my fair share of wrenching on it myself, and again, not fun. I think it’s a fantastic car to take to the track or for some weekend fun, but the BRZ/86 would 100% be more practical.
The GR86 is a great little car and fantastic value. But if the Porsche Cayman 987.2 is reliable and won't kill you in repair costs then there is no competition. The Cayman is one of the best looking cars of all time whilst also being THE STANDARD for a Sports Car.
I used to think all Porsche were ugly, especially since the design doesn't change, but seeing it for so many freaking years, it's grown on me. I just like the design now.
@@spoonman73 I agree completely. I believe it’s the perfection of automotive styling, and I’m a person who values styling very low when it comes to cars. I cannot wait to get to own a Porsche one day, from the performance to the styling, they are the pinnacle of driving machines in my opinion.
The PDK shifts faster then the manual. My 2011 2.9 does not have true LSD, but the computer plays with the inside rear brake and I have no problems with wheelspin while autocrossing. I see your test car has the headliner droop. A grand to replace the headliner or just keep it up with a 15-buck kit from Amazon.
To upgrade Miata suspension to half the body roll, ride better over big bumps, small cracks, reduce up to 20lbs, and longer lasting suspension vs non-Bilstein kits, get MeisterR dampers kits made from solid billet aluminum, mono tube, tuned in UK.
Agreed. I’ve had mine for 8 months now. They completely transformed my car. Better in the corners and they ride absolutely beautifully, much better than stock.
My 987.2 Cayman S hasn't been bad to maintain myself, but I do have a lift in my garage. Paid $29.5 4 years ago, it was great timing, woth a lot more now.
Really appreciate this very substantive comparison. I have a 2022 BGTS, and previously had a Miata. Your comments on the Porsche being very refined but less grin inducing ring very true. I still love the BGTS, but in a very different way. Would be very interested to hear your impressions of the upcoming type r once it’s out.
I can relate. I loved the feel of licking the tail out on my M3, of clawing out of a corner. My Boxster is agile and precise, but just doesn’t come alive in the same way.
Got a used Audi TTS under $40K . Base is 292 HP but with the turbo, it can be tuned to insane numbers. I'm Revo Stage II with Milltek exhaust and downpipe. I've never had it dyno tested so I have no idea what the HP is.
Yeah, I test drove one the other day. It really isn't as good of a driving experience as either the BRZ/GR86 or the N/A Cayman. I excluded the TTS from my decision process after the drive. The turbo lag is a real problem if one were performance driving it. That lag will hurt times and upset the car when accelerating out of a turn. The numbers look great and for daily driving or pure acceleration, it is great. But, for the track, well, it just isn't my flavor.
I went from a mk 2 TT to the 981 S, cross shopped for amk 3 ttrs as well. The tt is fine for straight line speed and daily duties, but you'll always hate the front end bias when taking a corner
I just ordered a GR86 and I think I should stop watching videos about it. It will never be able to live up to the expectations I am having watching this stuff. Prefering the GR86 over a Cayman, really? Is it that good?
No. The porsche has better balance, brakes, sound, usability/storage, value retention, image(if u care), engine, can be had in a convertible. The GR 86 is newer and more tossable. If you prefer a joy ride and hanging the backend out, then that's why the review is for the gr 86
First time viewer, I love your style, no hype, just an honest appraisal and it's clear to me that you are more than competent behind the wheel. I just want an affordable drivers car that excites and gives you that feeling of real enjoyment. The issue for me with some more powerful sports cars is that they can't really be enjoyed unless you're on a race track supposing that you want to keep your drivers licence. It pleases me that Subaru/Toyota are still giving us that option because it's a dying breed.
As a 22 BRZ owner, I can definitely confirm the 210-215whp feel. You’re right, the BRZ suspension is black and white different. I put some Conti tires to upgrade over Primacy, and it feels like it doubled in grip. I can barely break the back end out!
Another big "but" in daily livability is going to be maintenance cost. Beyond the fact that the GR86 is brand new with a factory warrant, parts and labor are incredibly expensive on a Porsche. I'd suggest checking prices on a few replacement items for the Caymen before you are completely seduced by the mid-engine beauty. No argument that they are beautiful cars and present the ultimate driving experience, but parts and labor are staggering from what I've seen on previous generations.
While I agree that parts and labor will be at a higher price point for Porsches, a thing to consider is that those 12 year old porsches are at the bottom of their deppreciation. If you buy one and sell it 4-5 years later, you might sell it at the same price that you bought it or maybe even higher. Although new cars are great with warranty and everything, you'll sell the gr86 a lot less than what you paid for. Probably half. Thats 15-20k down the drain. Just something to think about.
I think the biggest question is Daily driver or weekend drive? the Cayman holds it's value better but do you want to put 200k on it? And how much maintenance for that much driving? If high KM I would stick with GR86 less than 20K per year Cayman.
Hey Zy. Awesome video as always. Wanted to know your thoughts on Mk5 Supra vs M2/M2 comp DCT. My commute just got a whole lot longer so I’m thinking of a fun automatic coupe and wanted to know if you had a preference. Thanks! Leaning Supra but have a soft spot for BMWs. Dailying an 05 ZHP 6 speed sedan but getting tired of it in traffic.
@@Zygrene Thanks for the opinion. I have a friend that has a non comp M2 that I’ll try to get in, and hope I can get someone at a Toyota dealer let me test drive a Supra without having to have a check in the full amount with me lol.
Great video, lots of great information. You probably get asked all the time where are you running your cars looks like a great place for a spirited drive. Lastly, is there a discount code for the Avolon King automatically applied? If so, it's not working for me. Thx
I have to point out you weren't supposed to take off the plastic dropper lid for the armor shield ceramic coating bottle. A little goes a long way. I just saw you load that pad in that scene alone with enough coating to do an entire SUV.
This comparison is way off, for the same price as a new toyota, you could get a 3.4s low to mid mileage, a whole different car with real sports car looks, performance and undeniably the most able chassis outside of a supercar. No bias here at all owning the subaru sister car.
i'm sure when you factor maintenance and repair costs, the cayman will be much more expensive. If I wanted a fun car that i can have a lot of fun and drive the wheels off of it, it'll be the GR86. And for those who say that the Toyota is for poor people, well, rich people won't be buying a 12 year old cayman, and get a a new cayman gts 4.0, or a GT4 RS.
I got a 981 S, Low mileage for half the cost of a 3 year old gts 4.0. It sounds better, looks better from the front and has the same dynamics. Rich or not, why spend double for a newer infotainment and power you can't use on the road?
I purchased a limited as more grip at the limit is what puts a smile on my face. I’d be interested to see how much closer those tires puts these two together. To take it even further, now that I’ve equipped some RS4’s, the car is a weapon in the corners. :)
You can go wrong with a used porsche... because any way you look at it, 2010 means 13 years old! And that means even the most cared for cars will have things wearing out / need replacing = more costs.
Base 987.2 or even a 987.1 hands down. One is an actual sports car, the Toyota is a drift toy...that's the difference. 987 just needs a hp aos, pads and base Cayman are reliable as Porsche get. it will put down better numbers in a straight line or around the track with virtually no mods with it's stock tires. The other will need a new engine plus labor 😂. The Cayman doesn't even need an LSD because it already has the correct wheel sizes, grip and perfect balance although adding one would make it even better. Caymans benefits are not something you can understand by looking at its very average paper specs. Also the Cayman engine sound is so much better.
I got the feeling you were reviewing the tires as much as the cars, so I'm curious how you'd feel with those being equal. But I agree with another comment that we need more reviews like this. Car enthusiasts don't limit themselves to only new cars or only old cars. Even though the twins are on my short list, having owned a 986 Boxster S, I can say that the engine noise alone draws me closer to the Porsche. It never comes across properly in videos - from inside the cabin, an NA flat 6 sounds alive and pissed off.
Aw bro I cannot wait to hear that sound from inside the cabin. I love it in videos. That raspy howling gives me chills like no other NA engine does. (I got a hybrid turbo mk1 TT now.) I’m saving, and building credit, hoping in a year or 2 I can get a 987.2 cayman , or a 981 with the PDK. I’d rather the S, but even the base would be amazing for me. I’m only 23 and I weld for a living haha.
Wrong I’ve had cheap skinny on 205/235 17s on my cayman before still wonderful actually also bought used 19s 235/265 tires were old so made it fun as hell to drive it was very easy to drift ..yes tires make a huge difference but the cayman will never be shit 😢
This car definitely exceeds expectations; the driver oriented and balance characteristics of the twins is what I imagine it feels to drive at least a Cayman. The weight distribution and suspension is so nicely dialed to be playful yet super stable.
The biggest positive of the GR86 IMO is the durability. I know the Cayman is pretty reliable, but having a factory warranty and that much fun on a stock car makes me think I'd take the GR86 for the price point. Of course, the durability of either car is GREATLY enhanced by the AvalonKing Armor Shield IX ™; providing a world class ceramic finish to any car to help protect your paint and make car washes easy.
Lol meh. Performance ceiling for the Cayman is 80k level through and through, but 86 is at best 40k for handling and like IF 20k-price-point worth of engine.
@@zcmdzpp127 idk man I mean I guess but many have a holler than though attitude about the GR86 and act like the Supra isn’t that great dynamics wise so I’d like an analysis from him
I've wanted a 987 Cayman badly ever since they came out. But I also ADORE my NC2 Miata. I feel really conflicted about it. The Miata makes more logical sense, but I never dreamed about the silly grinning car when I was a kid.
I have driven all the cars you mentioned along with other porches except for the cayman and I can say your review seems accurate or at least have the same taste as me. I just wish the BRZ came in a convertible spider configuration.
It would have to be a cayman S at least, plus you're talking new vs used. Plus even if they were both used and similar mileage and still in the same price point, they still technically aren't. Porsche mods and repairs and maintenance are going to be a lot more expensive.
Its a shame how some pf these cars are just "No, no not for you tall guys!" I'm 6'2' and around 230lbs. I can't fit in any Miata for more than a few miles and when I was considering a used S2000 the salesman didn't even try and sell me the car when he had to help pry my legs from up under the fixed (Why no adjustable wheel in a 30k car again.") So I'm told you can be over 6'4" and still be comfortable in the BRZ/GR86 and I know I fit in the Caymen so this is a choice between what I can fit in. .
Tall guys have tons of advantages though. Women love tall men and hate short men. A stinky broke lazy tall men will have lots of women attracted to him.
Nice to see you driving a GR86, have one myself. Had to drive over an hour to buy one with a MT. Been very happy with it so far but the biting point of the clutch is almost at the very top of the pedal. Not sure if it's like that in other GR86s but I'm taking it to the dealer on Monday.
I own a 2012 Cayman S and didn't know the base was port injection. Thanks for the head's up. Little known fact, that makes it far easier to tune (than the direct injection) and get big power from a twin turbo upgrade. As others have said here, Porsche maintenance will be more. My advice, if you able to set aside $3-5K more for unexpected repairs, feel free to get the Porsche. I'm a RSX guy and you're a S2K guy. You gravitate towards a playful oversteer car and I wanted a new car which understeers at the limit, which is why my Cayman was the "safe" choice for me as a FWD driver. You're assessment of the Cayman driving feel is 100% spot-on. I compare it to a scalpel in how it corners, as opposed to the RSX cornering is like a dull hatchet (but still getting the job done) 😉
I think you don't really know what slip angle is. It's completely different from sliding angle. Tires always produce some amount of slip angle regardless of whether it's sliding or not
I recently just bought a 987.1 cayman and I’ll say that both these cars look great . The Porsche in my opinion looks timeless. That mid engine feel and balance is otherworldly to me. But like I said just my 2¢ as a cayman owner.
The Porsche looks far better.
Done.
This is almost EXACTLY the sports car “dilemma” I have. This helped more than I could’ve imagined. Thank you!
Isn’t that the best, when you’re comparing a few cars, and then an awesome TH-camr like Zygrene swoops in to save the day.
That'll be 5% commission please and thank you 😏
So which did you get?
I think it would add value to discuss running costs. Tires, brakes, maintenance costs, etc. That factors into what I consider great track cars, as lower running costs let me afford more track days 😊
Ya, I think it's pretty obvious though. I mean, from a guesstimate standpoint, but I would have liked a little more concrete ideas.
The reliability is another factor. No point of having track killer if it working right or too expensive to repair
This guy takes technical review/comparison to another level. Really shows that he knows what he’s talking about.
Thanks Rod!
Nope, nothing beats a Lotus Elise for occasional track use, it makes the Cayman feel like a retirement spec Corvette.

Comparing a more expensive and less reliable car to a less but reliable car is out of this world.
With the correct tires and driving technique the porsche can simulate the feel of GR86 to some extent. The real difference is that the porsche can overlap with some of the GR86 strengths BUT the GR86 cannot overlap with the strengths of the porsche. As far as I know, both stock cars are pretty reliable.
yes love the 86/BRZs but you can't beat the driving feel of a mid-engine like a Cayman sports car cornering at close to or at the limit
The 86 is like a modern 944 in my opinion
YOOOO bro CONGRATUFUCKINLATIONS on getting sponsored I’m so hyped for you you haven’t gotten nearly as much recognition or support as you deserve afaic so I’m glad to see it starting from Avalon King
Cayman because it can grow with me into my retirement years compared to the 86 where i feel its a younger persons car.
I would take the Cayman but I have to admit the new 86 is a very good proposition as well.
Big issue for me, is the Cayman has no LSD. Not even Cayman S's have LSD's... 86, it's standard equipment.
@@bliglum If you can find a Cayman R, they all have LSD (plus a whole host of other driver-focused improvements).

Interesting the experiences of GR86 smiles per mile versus Caymans business like approach.
I paid 38 for my 2016 Cayman.
Zero maintenance in 1.5 years (12k) miles
It's a much better car.
Zero maintenance for 12,000 miles? That’s not a brag it’s why you don’t buy used porches
@@liltuck737 we have 67000 on it now. 35k miles since purchased.
No additional maintenance yet. Just tires brakes and rotors. Need new cv boots and it's due for a new serpentine belt and plugs about now. Great car
Another great GR86/BRZ video that is convincing me more and more. I love my 986 Boxster, but the value and practicality of the 86/BRZ can't be beat.
Having owned both a 987.1 Cayman S and a FRS: I have to agree with your assessment. The 86 is playful, while the Cayman is all business.
The Gen 2 86 is a beast compared to the Gen 1.
Yes they can be, I think most German cars are like this
@@pkonyoutube Basically more grown up. Done the loose rear drift thing. Cayman next.
Own a 987.2 cayman exactly the same as the one in the video. Exceptional car and insanely fun to drive.
You can ask for additional custom spring rates, all for $1,000
I have so much respect for your views. You really know what you're talking about unlike many reviewers who can't drive.
Yeah well, it was sold for more than double the money as new (nearly double used).

Currently shopping these 2 cars as well. Leaning towards the Cayman. How has running cost been?
@@ganthrithorLMAO I’ve never heard someone say “oh that car sounds HORNY” 😂
Your description of the Porsche about how you smile less but able to be more serious and accurate while allowing more power to be put down is how I feel about my sti. Thinking about switching to the gr86
Although subjective I had an 07 sti and can confirm my Boxster is more fun and satisfying to drive without question. I think the the GR86 is a great package and would own it over the 07 sti but they are kinda apples to oranges. Now if you test drove a Cayman or Boxster it might make you change your mind. Good luck both the Porsche and the GR86 are fun sports cars.
Reg the difference between your BRZ and the GR86-
How much of the playfullness is due to the primacy of the GR86 vs the pilot sport 4 of your BRZ
I'd estimate that the tires contribute 50% while the suspension differences make up the other 50%
@@Zygrene so if the comparison was between your brz and the cayman which one would win?
keep in mind a new GR86 is going to depreciate much harder and faster than the older Cayman which has already pretty much bottomed out in depreciation ....and the cool factor isn't even a comparison
all things being equal a $30K 2022 Toyota is going to cost you more money at the end of the day when it comes time to sell than a used $30K 2009 Cayman even after maintenance cost are factored in.
The gr86 is better. Way more spacious and it has a flat engine and super low centre of gravity
I like the GR86 too and I agree that the S2000 is the only scar I’d take against the GR86 stock to stock~
Car*
As a weekend car yea but for a daily the 86 is perfect
This is a great review with sharp observations and detailed analysis 👍
My 987.2 S has an LSD factory - it was only a $700 option code 220
So recently had this comparison on the Tail of the Dragon. Ran my 987.1 Cayman S behind a stock new 86. The 86 was able to very slowly pull away from me, but it was also a dragon photographer that's run the road hundreds of times, so I don't feel too bad.
Still it shows the new 86 is plenty capable.
With modern tires, the 987 has more grip. Put a set of grippy tires, and there's very little cars that grip as much as boxster/cayman.
The comparisons you make between these cars amazingly echoes what I would say about my ND Miata and 996.
I have a 2010 Cayman S model which is 320 hp. I bought it 24 months ago for $23k
The GR86 is a great little car and fantastic value. But if the Porsche Cayman 987.2 is reliable and won't kill you in repair costs then there is no competition.
The Cayman is one of the best looking cars of all time whilst also being THE STANDARD for a Sports Car.
Good to see someone comparing new with old ,I agree with you the Porsche is on another level but then I bias,l have a 987.2 2.9 .great video.
I used to think all Porsche were ugly, especially since the design doesn't change, but seeing it for so many freaking years, it's grown on me. I just like the design now.
Its one of the most beautiful sports cars with classic, timeless design. Everything else looks tacky.
I still don't like older models. 2012 and up looks great
@@spoonman73 I agree completely. I believe it’s the perfection of automotive styling, and I’m a person who values styling very low when it comes to cars. I cannot wait to get to own a Porsche one day, from the performance to the styling, they are the pinnacle of driving machines in my opinion.
@@mizaqenyad4269 Couldn't have said it better myself.....
Mid engined (superior handling) or anti-fun beeps and fake engine noise....I'll take the Cayman.
I'm the owner of that Cayman, I went with the $15 amazon kit shortly after this was filmed 😄

Agreed. I’ve had mine for 8 months now. They completely transformed my car. Better in the corners and they ride absolutely beautifully, much better than stock.
Thank you for this comparison!!
Definitely the one with the Michelin tires will drive more like the Porsche, right?
My 987.2 Cayman S hasn't been bad to maintain myself, but I do have a lift in my garage. Paid $29.5 4 years ago, it was great timing, woth a lot more now.
You need to compare them on a race circuit, see what happens with the Porsche at it's limit if you want to compare handling.
Okay, I want you to re-read your second sentence with a straight face
You need to drive faster, trust me it does break.
Got a used Audi TTS under $40K . Base is 292 HP but with the turbo, it can be tuned to insane numbers. I'm Revo Stage II with Milltek exhaust and downpipe. I've never had it dyno tested so I have no idea what the HP is.
Ooooooookaaaa?
@@gsk5161 uh huh, uh huh, uh huh uh huh uh huh.......

Yes tyres make a massive difference. The Cayman has much wider and gripper tyres than the 86.
which Conti's did you get?
Thats because you have no HP lmfao

@@NFSINSANE hey hey it’s just my daily 🤣 just gotta keep up with those Accords in traffic
@@alexandrebergeron1260 we live in strange times. not many cars have depreciated over the last 2 years
The 987.2 cayman S can really put a smile on your face haha way more power and mine has an LSD factory
Both are great but I'd lean towards the M2C as a fun daily for its snappier transmission and added practicality.
@@Zygrene Thanks for the opinion. I have a friend that has a non comp M2 that I’ll try to get in, and hope I can get someone at a Toyota dealer let me test drive a Supra without having to have a check in the full amount with me lol.

I have to point out you weren't supposed to take off the plastic dropper lid for the armor shield ceramic coating bottle. A little goes a long way. I just saw you load that pad in that scene alone with enough coating to do an entire SUV.
Porsche any day ….. And the depreciation is virtually zero ….
I had a Cayman S and I sold it and got my second Mustang GT. Enjoyment is king regardless of what journalists say about X brand.
Agree, driven both cars and the Porsche Cayman is on whole other level above 86.
What road are you on here?
On these base primacy tires, does the GR86 feel much different from the last gen 86 in terms of handling?
Would you prefer the BRZ to the GR86 for performance driving or vice versa? Of course, I'm assuming equal tires which you didn't get to sample.
Excellent video comparing these great cars. I’d love for you to take the 22’ M440i Gran Coupe (x-drive)on this road and give your impressions.
Have to take in consideration the cost of maintenance and reliability. My '02 Porsche 911 Carrera (996) was very unreliable and expensive to maintain.
Mines Road! Nice review. Cayman cost of ownership (i.e. repair) is a big detractor. GR86 aftermarket is big advantage if you want to mod.
I think with the summer tires the GR86 closes in on the precision side of things.
Stock setup, with the same tyres there's no beating physics. So I doubt it very much.
Put the skinny Primacys on the Cayman and I'll guarantee it would drive like shit. Width and compound of tyres make a HUGE difference.
If you think of it as the cheapest and the lowest maintenance cost Porsche, you can realize the merits of the GR86!
whats more fun between the gr86 and the gt86
What would have really made this interesting was adding a 911 996 to the mix 😁.
Maintenance costs on each vary wildly haha.
Fun fact, the nd2 miata has a higher horspower to weight ratio than the gr86. There is no dealer markup either
Porsche there is no substitute
Have you done Supra vs brz? Supra all day for me as a road car personally

What about interiors, noise and so on?
It would have to be a cayman S at least, plus you're talking new vs used. Plus even if they were both used and similar mileage and still in the same price point, they still technically aren't. Porsche mods and repairs and maintenance are going to be a lot more expensive.
Dealer service will kill you with the Porsche. If you do maintenance yourself it is pretty affordable and easy to work on car.
@@paulrocha8006 Not easier then a gr86.
does the gr86 really ride better than a 987 cayman? my experience is different hmmm
Great review.
Nice to see you driving a GR86, have one myself. Had to drive over an hour to buy one with a MT. Been very happy with it so far but the biting point of the clutch is almost at the very top of the pedal. Not sure if it's like that in other GR86s but I'm taking it to the dealer on Monday.
ive been driving one for 6days Yes its normal and you will get used to it
Yep. High clutch engagement is normal for these cars.
You should have just bought an automatic GR86. That's what I'm gonna do!
Isn't the clutch engagement point adjustable?
What if the choice was Cayman with a PDK or the GR86 with the automatic?? = )
I’m still taking the Porsche
Wow, this is most helpful!
