Do you want to pure your irons like a tour pro? Watch this...
Are you tired of hitting it fat, thin, toed, heeled, maybe even a shank?
Today you're going to find the best way to pure those irons, get some distance back in there, and hit them straight, high, and knock down some flagsticks.
Matt Walter, PGA Teaching Professional at Vanderbilt Legends Club shows us how.
We're going to get you hitting your irons the best you ever have. I have three drills that we're going to do today, all of which are going to help you find the center of the club face with your irons the best way possible.
So, let's talk about what happens when you hit a good iron shot. What are we looking for, dynamically, at impact? So, when we hit a good iron shot, it should be ball-first contact, and the club head should be traveling down, still, as it contacts the golf ball.
So, our divots are actually taking place after the ball, three to four inches after the ball, and not before the ball or at the golf ball.
So, if you want to hit your irons pure, we have to be able to ensure that we're hitting the golf ball first, the club head's still going down, and catches the golf ball with the divot just past the ball, and going through the shot.
Now, just because I said the club head is going down doesn't mean your arms are going down, but the club head is still traveling down. Also, at impact, we want some shaft lean, right? We want to have our hands in front of the golf ball.
That's the Holy Grail of golf shots everybody talks about. "I've got to have more shaft lean."
Well, today's drills are going to help you achieve that, and it's not going to be in the ways you might think, where you're actually going to focus on shaft lean.
We're going to do it by focusing on some other drills that are going to bring it in because you have to have shaft lean to hit the shots the way you want. The first drill uses a towel...
Watch the video to see all 3 drills, and start puring those irons.

Just bought a new golf net for the back yard..can’t wait to watch these videos and immediately be able to go practice them in the comfort of my own yard. No more wasted time driving and spending money at the range. With these drills, my net, and impact stickers I can work better at home to eventually make my range time before a round more efficient. Thank you.

Great drills. Just went to the range using the right elbow tuck drill minus the towel. My right elbow must have been all over the place but keeping it tighter to the body and focusing on my club head path on my back swing has really helped. 2 large buckets and most of the shots felt great, only a few miss hits (I'm a 22 handicap!) A few times I rotated my hips a little early and the ball went right, never a slice, just lost accuracy, once I focused more on a subtle weight transfer and letting the club head do the work, the consistency of the shots was much better. @@novaknovakovic1585 good athletes will figure it out. If you're not a good athlete then you need a good swing.
The club is a hammer. Swing like the head weighs 5 lbs, you can't make a bad swing with a sledge hammer (you would almost certainly hurt yourself)
Go hit a tree with a sledgehammer. Thats how you hit a golf ball.

Thanks so much. I have lost my swing due to too many swing changes. The first two drills were the one that l often practice at range. Using short iron and hit it simple and pure
. And it always give better hits at the course. Ego got the better of me to want to have a pro swing and got myself mess up. I am taking the medicine to go back to basics. Tqvm.

I really like these drills! The step drill works very well for me and I definitely feel like I get a turn and great compression of the ball. My question is this.....how do I stop having to step, since it's the ONLY way I can repeat the compression? Is there a point in which the turn and compression will become second nature?

Thanks for your video. Good tips to try something different on the range. I went from hitting irons pure - to cannot hit my irons at all - I think its because of my pursuit for distance on my longer irons...my 8 iron was 150 and 4 iron was 180. In trying to get my 8 iron to 160 and my 4 iron to 190 / 200, I cant hit any iron now. My range time today was the worst I had in 4 years since I started golf. Have to start from scratch and basics.

I struggle a lot with my long irons. I think I’m trying to hard to get underneath the ball instead of the iron doing the work! Had absolutely no confidence with them...

At impact, my right trailing foot has not moved at all, arms sligtly bent, shaft is not leaned forward, shoulders are square like at setup, hips the same. However, I am happy with my ball flights in general. In forward swing, I try to turn my leading hip first. Why I end up at impact in this status? What is it that I am missing that I need to do? I would be so happy to know it so thatvI can play better golf. Thank you so much. All the best.
