Hey champ, great video, I live at the bottom of the Glenshee pass which is where I believe you have shot this video. Just a little tip for future reference, turn your ice axe around so the adze is facing forward, as in the event of a slide you will have it the wrong way round if the pick is facing forward, making the chance of a successful fall arrest low. Cracking video though and thanks for putting the effort in for us to be able to watch 🙌 All the best, Lee.
Yes I was up Glas Maol. Ok, I will look into that for next time, thank you for the advice. I suppose having it that way round is better for snow as opposed to ice, where you would want the point. Perhaps all I have read is for self arrests on ice rather then fresh snow. Thanks again, glad you liked it. Rowan.
@ hey bud, so it’s the same for snow, ice, any type of ice axe arrest the Adze needs to face forward as your wrist is effectively backwards if a slide happens if the pick is forward, which means you have to 180 degree the pick back to halt a fall, almost impossible. Will link a really good video for you to take a look. 🥊
Perfect weather and nice experience! Great video! It's fascinating how different people approach staying warm in freezing conditions-I’ve definitely learned a lot from my own snowy adventures.

Oh that's an exciting place, looks very nice. The gear helps, but its not the be all to go walking/camping in amazing places. It has taken me years to get this gear together and yet I go camping on Dartmoor in the same places I did years ago with much less/simpler gear. it might as well be Antarctica. coldest place in Britain - the cairn. A death zone, and that's me being optimistic. has barely been warmer than -16C with windchill each night up there. awesome! lmao - "i'm just popping out.... I may be some time...."
Does look equally bleak on the summit there, although I will guess a tad warmer. But no, it really was a great camp, in the tent it felt practically warm. Thanks for watching. Rowan.
That tents brilliant, thanks to your video im now in 2 minds on the hilleberg soulo BL or Jannu RL. Do you have a suggestion as i dont want to think someone has fallen into my tent another night😅 love the videos btw.
They are really nice tents. I had a Soulo Bl, but it sadly leaked. I would say both with cope with 90% of the weather you will encounter in Britain. The Jannu is a much nicer space to be in at night but you pay a weight penalty for it. Personally I have found the Jannu more enjoyable and more versatile. The Soulo is good, but for long winter nights it can be a bit cramped and that is where I prefer the Jannu. Hope this helps. Rowan.
@RowanWildCamps thanks for the feedback, my only worry was the size of the soulo. From your video's and reply I'm even more swayed towards the jannu, will decide in January, thanks again.
I knew it was on the way, so planned accordingly, and really was not as bad as the forecast/news were making it out to be. My first proper test with the Jannu and it was great. Thanks for watching. Rowan.
Great winter night out, cold and quite windy in the morning. Have been looking at some older nice Cairngorms winter hiking vids lately, this one certainly fits. As a winter camping novice, would you mind sharing a/partial gear list? Ice axe, sleeping system et cetera are obvious but I could use advice regarding gloves, mittens and stuff like that. (I've got some 90% of all required gear for snow hiking but mainly worry about freezing fingers; all my dry and warm gear becoming unreachable if I can't use any clip/toggle/zipper. Perhaps bring multiple or do you use combinations and/or something like Bramble hand warmers also perhaps?). 🤙
Thank you, really was a fun one, managed to get a bit of everything. I can do my best, although I would advise looking at a few other channels/pages that specialise in winter camping, the majority of my kit is used year-round, can cope with most UK conditions, especially as I know how to work it (comes with time). But to instantly say, definitely get a decent pair of gloves, without your hands you lose access to all your gear, no matter what it is. Mine are Rab Storm gloves, I also take a pair of Salomon running gloves and Montane Prism gloves. The latter is more for inside the tent, while the running gloves are good for taking the edge off if it’s not snowing. I also take a set of HotHands just in case I cannot warm up again. A proper thought out and practiced layering system is important as you want to minimise any form of moisture, whether that is sweat/rain or snow. All will make you cold when you stop moving. My orange jacket is mainly just for wearing in the tent, and taking a spare fleece/insulating layer is a good idea, plus a set of thermals for at night. Ski goggles or some form of eye protection is crucial and sunglasses if it’s sunny, the light reflects really well of snow. A buff, warm hat and a spare pair of socks is good no matter the conditions. And to remember if you going to take a water filter, to make sure you don’t let it freeze, put it in your jacket/sleeping bag as the fibres inside will break. Maybe snow pegs as well. And of course, all your usual navigation and exit/plan b procedures. For example, I navigated of the summit only using my compass, as the night before I checked the bearing and knew what it was and could just follow that back in the morning. Hope this helps, feel free to ask anything else. If you want a complete list of the gear I took, I can make that for you, may take a while to remember the names of some items. Rowan.
@@RowanWildCamps Much, much appreciated input. Don't feel obliged to pull up a full list. The 3-set gloves practice seems used more often, I'll start with my variation on that. Thanks.
That was a great place to pitch, especially in the Jannu. I go to places like that in my H'berg Soulo. Love the Jannu but the wife would blow a gasket if I purchased a fourth H'berg.
Really was, first winter camp I have used the Jannu in. I had a Soulo BL for a time, but it leaked. That being saif the extra room is lovely in the Jannu. Probably best to stick to 3 for now then.
@@mikeoglen6848Not sure if would risk that. Love the Jannu and the Unna, but really do I really 'need' another H'berg? I hate saying it but the answer is 'no'. Thanks brother.
I always avoid wild camping if strong winds are forecasted and the chance of an inaccurate forecast like that terrifies me. But the tent seemed to cope with it very well.
I can see exactly why, and it is not a guide on pitch locations, but rather something I enjoy to do and know me/my gear can cope with it. But no, the tent was fine, thanks for watching. Rowan.
Thank you. I guess that's the Cairngorms for you, plus I was over 1000m elevation. I live in southern England where weather like this is becoming less and less common. Hopefully you'll get you winter soon however.
Thank you. Yes, so far I am, no reason to fault it. Wasn't snow, but frozen condensation. I know some people have issues with leaking under the vent covers, but I have not had that yet with the Jannu.
Awesome camp Rowan. Harsh conditions for sure! What are your thoughts so far on Jannu vs Nallo. I haven’t used my Jannu much since I bought the Nallo earlier this year, but this video has given me the urge to get it out again. Hoping to get out this weekend. Some tasty winds into the 50s forecast so perfect time to dust it off lol👌
Thank you, although I am still jealous of that snowy camp you and Tom had in Ireland where the snow came up and around your tent. I find it hard to compare the 2 as they serve different purposes for me, I feel the Nallo is more versatile and just as strong if both are pitched correctly. Almost personal preference, I like semi-geodesic tents in case of unsure conditions/wind and for potential snow loading. That sounds fun, still haven't had my Jannu out in over 45mph yet, although having seen youself andd Tom use it, you shoul have a nice weekened. Cheers for the comments. Rowan.
@ hey Rowan yeah that was a one off camp. Haven’t seen conditions like those in years. I am so impressed with nallo that I would agree in all but heavy snow loading it is maybe the equal of the Jannu. That’s why I have been using it so much 👍
I hope it not as cold as it looked. Does your tent a a separate floor and top, looks like there is a crack around the joint that lets in cold air. Stay warm, far too cold for me.
Did you get much sleep with the temperature being low ? I was wondering how well the sleep pad and bag performed given that it may have been colder than forecast.
Thank for watching, glad you liked it. Food freezing has never been too much of an issue, as for water I normally boil water for a coffee as soon as I get in the tent, and boil a bit more than needed to add back into the bottle, same when making food/melting snow. Plus when it gets really cold you probably should insulate your bottles in some way, I sometimes put the bottles in my boot, for the water and to stop any potential spin drift gettig in my boots. I know some people heat up some water and put the bottle in the bottom of their sleeping bag, but I wouldn't want to risk it leaking etc. There are some very good channels out there that will be able to help you far better on cold weather caming than me. Rowan.
Thanks for the video. It wasn't easy to film, respect. But why didn't you pitch the tent inside the protective rock wall? Someone built it for a reason some time ago. And about forecasts and calculations. For example, you know that your sleeping bag is designed for temperatures up to -10 degrees Celsius, and suddenly a strong wind picks up that you didn't expect. It might be equivalent to a temperature drop to -25. Risky. Take care of yourself 🙏
Sometimes silence can have the loudest message.well done.I'm from Glasgow and I've been to the cairngorms a few times, but what is the yellow ball( @7:30) in the sky?
It is what makes it feel more normal to me when I watch the videos back, glad you like it too. I'm not sure, I seem to remember seeing it a couple times on Dartmoor as well. Maybe it will reappear in a few months?
It is the 700, but yes I think for the price its unbeatable. Comfort rated to -2 and packs down really small, I've never been cold in it. Got it in 2019, so some of the down escpaed and has lost some loft, but won't be changing yet. Thanks for watching. Rowan.
I can see why, but the wind and snow were to get worse, and I have 2 nights worth of food and gas just in case it got really bad. But I felt comfortable leaving.
I can think of better things to do on a day like that to be honest! I think I would have waited the storm out assuming that I had enough provisions to last me of course.
Haha you might have been better off building a Igloo lol You're keen bailing from a cosey tent & hiking out in a whiteout, woulda been icicles in the testicles I bet Great video You've got the gear, and know how to use it

Thanks.
@@tubulzr That's ok, if you change your mind let me know. Having options for your hands is a good idea. Goodluck with your winter camping.

Thanks for watching.
Nice video from an experienced hiker. Congratulations. What things do you use to put your guylines in order ?
Excellent!
Thanks for watching.
These Hillebergs must be good winter tents?
@@mikeoglen6848 Dependable tents.
@@DavidUnderwood-t1n Thanks. The Question is will the Wife let you buy another one?
@@mikeoglen6848Not sure if would risk that. Love the Jannu and the Unna, but really do I really 'need' another H'berg? I hate saying it but the answer is 'no'. Thanks brother.
I always avoid wild camping if strong winds are forecasted and the chance of an inaccurate forecast like that terrifies me. But the tent seemed to cope with it very well.
I can see exactly why, and it is not a guide on pitch locations, but rather something I enjoy to do and know me/my gear can cope with it. But no, the tent was fine, thanks for watching.
Rowan.
Stupid spot to camp. Anyone who knows the Cairngom plateau knows how exposed the summit is and featureless especially in a snowstorm.
Pretty comfy.
Good movie! You can think you are in Sweden in winter 😁. I live in the southern parts of Sweden and unfortunately it has not been winter here yet.
Thank you. I guess that's the Cairngorms for you, plus I was over 1000m elevation. I live in southern England where weather like this is becoming less and less common. Hopefully you'll get you winter soon however.
damn, its so cool
uuuffff that's a beefy camp brother, real danger, brave man!
And really fun, thanks for watching.
@@RowanWildCamps Amazing dude
That was an excellent film Rowan. Were you happy with the Jannu? Looks like fine snow was getting under the 'hat'.
That’s why I have been using it so much 👍
@@garynesbitt5078 Did seem it, but definetely special. Me too, can pretty much do the same. Plus it is a lot lighter.
what's the idea? take down your tent in the middle of a storm? isn't it the opposite?
Can't imagine how cold it is there
About -9.5 at one point, but weirdly didn't feel that bad. Very refreshing.
I hope it not as cold as it looked. Does your tent a a separate floor and top, looks like there is a crack around the joint that lets in cold air. Stay warm, far too cold for me.
كلما زاد الحفر في ارض التخييم زاد ضمان التدفءه وتمكين الخيمه وارتفع سور يخيط الخيمه بتواضع الخيمه الغير مرتع مداس لاي مجهول
Did you get much sleep with the temperature being low ? I was wondering how well the sleep pad and bag performed given that it may have been colder than forecast.
Excellent video! Nice to watch from the warmth of my lounge! How do you prevent your water and food from freezing in those conditions?
Rowan.
@@RalfPinkaire-f7w He was asking how. How do you keep yours warm in these conditions?
❤❤
#hilleberg
We are all Nature
The Cairngorms could get a reputation for being a tad windy at this rate.
It could indeed :)
No one in their right mind would put a tent there.
You'd be surprised then :)
Why would you say that?
This was such a good watch I just had to subscribe, respect
Thank you for watching.
It’s like the moon
Nice Video. Where can i find your gearlist ? :-)
Thank you, I have not made one, but if you needed it then I can put one together, may take me a while.
@@RowanWildCamps yes would be nice. Maybe some more people are interessted. keep up the work !
@@schiebmichdoch7517I'll do my best, I'm away at the moment so it may be till Christmas before I get that done properly. Apologies for the delay.
@@RowanWildCamps nah no worrys mate take your time ;)
How do you like the Alpkit Skyehigh bag, is it the 900 ?
It is the 700, but yes I think for the price its unbeatable. Comfort rated to -2 and packs down really small, I've never been cold in it. Got it in 2019, so some of the down escpaed and has lost some loft, but won't be changing yet.
Thanks for watching. Rowan.
@ thanks for the reply. I chose the pipe dream 600. Its temperature rated a bit lower than the sky high range. Have yet to try it though.
@@craigy1872 I considered that one, but at the time the Sky High suited me better and still works well. Both are good bags, you should like it.
I’d be inclined to sit that storm out in the shelter of the tent
Do,people realize it almost has to be a tent or a tarp.Look around no tree,s to cut down.Everything is frozen.
Hanya 1 malam ? Seharusnya anda tinggal disana 2 atau 3 malam pasti seru sekali.
vc teve um belo local para por sua barraca aos 2:41 porque não o fez?
Looks like a good idea. Camp where theres nothing to see, no firewood, no protections from the winds, then packup during a whiteout. Yeah, Good idea
Yeah, I really enjoyed it. The stars in particular were amazing.
Beautiful and quiet.Why don't you light a fire?😮
Thank you, can't light fires for various reasons. Only in certain locations with permission are you allowed too.
I believe I would have had to wait that storm out before I packed up and left!
Might of had a very long wait then. I don't think he's that bothered!
I can see why, but the wind and snow were to get worse, and I have 2 nights worth of food and gas just in case it got really bad. But I felt comfortable leaving.
OMG I woulda stayed in the tent the whole time and like waited it out! :(
I had food and gas for 2 nights, so if it got really bad, then I could have done.
i tried doing this i lost a hand to thermal cold
I can think of better things to do on a day like that to be honest! I think I would have waited the storm out assuming that I had enough provisions to last me of course.
Haha you might have been better off building a Igloo lol
You're keen bailing from a cosey tent & hiking out in a whiteout, woulda been icicles in the testicles I bet
Great video
You've got the gear, and know how to use it
Perhaps I should give that a go, a real challenge. Suprisingly it didn't feel that cold, as long as you could keep the wind out.
Thanks for watching, I always try to get used to my kit before trying more challenging enviroments, which certainly helps.
Rowan.
