First time I saw him nearly 20 years ago, I knew right off this is Pac’s Father. God Bless them all, this is a story that needed told. It’s uncut dope 👑
Damn man this shit hurts💔 We love you Ms Afeni Nobody is perfect but it's just another example of what mother's can do to Son's!! Glad Mr.Garland is finally getting his vindication and speaking his truth!!!💯
This issue is so detrimental to the black community, it does so much damage to these children when the mom deliberately keeps the child away from the father.
If you know Pac's music then you know 1] His childhood living situation was often unstable, 2] At some point Afeni had a heavy addiction problem & 3] Pac never really talked about why he had to move to Cali or who he stayed with. I love that Pac had & showed love, appreciation & admiration for his mother. However, there is no way in hell his relationship with his mother wasn't complicated.
Single mothers are generally bad people. The whole fact that they ended up single mothers is enough to tell you they aren't the greatest. Good men don't leave good women, and a good woman would not choose a bad man to have kids with. So either both the mom and dad are bad, or the mother is bad.
Great interview. He clearly has seen how you have respectfully documented Pac's life. It's good to hear from him and to know he isn't dead like social media had falsely put out. I hope he talks more about his background as a Black Panther and family.
I was shocked to see this video pop up as I was searching him up a few months back and also read that he passed like twenty years ago. It's good to see him looking so well.
He wasn’t a Panther he ran with Nicky Barnes and them. I think maybe that’s why Afeni didn’t want to acknowledge him as the father. Because a Panther having a child with the OPP is hypocrisy isn’t it?
@Aidah Ward exactly mutula Shakur is who Pac thought was his dad he's Mopreme dad but not Pac Afeni led him to believe Mutula was his dad that's who she was dating
I grew up with my mother & me not knowing who my father was, found out he was married & had children when I was conceived. I was never told his name or what he looked like. I have mixed feelings about both my parents for bringing me into this world in that manner cuz they both played a part in making me. I can deeply relate to this.
Sorry you had/have to deal with that. Keep your head up. One thing is or sure though, you we be the parent to your children that they will be proud of. ✌✌
@Bobayagga223 Man, stop it. How are you going to just blame the woman? The man said his father was married with children when he was conceived. For all we know the father didn't want anything to do with him. There are plenty of men in this world who deny their kids and are spiteful.
@Pason Jayne Your anecdotal evidence doesn't equal a fact. It is not just women. As I said, there are plenty of spiteful men in the world who keep themselves from their kid/s. You have guys who won't see their kid/s or even acknowledge that the kid/s they help bring in the world is even theirs because they dislike the mother. As the op stated he doesn't like how his parents brought him into the world. There are others like him who've be brought into this world by two irresponsible people. Who then leave their kids to deal with the trauma of their irresponsible actions.
@Pason Jayne don't put all women in this category, there at more who do not pull this than there are that do. Plenty of MEN bounce without a reason other than wanting to live free. Goes both ways🙄
You love him? Chick, you don’t even know him beyond this interview and you certainly don’t know him on a personal level. Another delusional just throwing words around and saturating their significance.
I remember Pacs assistant telling a story about Pac getting fed up with his moms family in Atlanta calling him up everyday want money, wanting more money, more more more. He got so frustrated with the phone calls he took the phone and smashed it on the ground. Then we have Pacs father. He just wanted a relationship with his son, but he was painted as the bad guy.
Reggie Wright has also hinted around the fact that Pac and Afeni weren't on super great terms during the time he was on Death Row from what he observed but Reggie obviously didn't go too much more deeply into it out of respect. I wonder if this interview will change his mind on that now that Pac's father has spoken.
He knew he had a son but never tried to take care of him...this dude is not what he seems. Pac was famous for like 6 years but this dude couldn't find him until he got shot don't make sense to me
@@bigj0000 pretty hard to take care of someone when you don't know where they are at as a child. The kid got taken to Baltimore and Marin city, all while his mom was on drugs and telling her son his dad was dead. Sorry, but they didn't have Facebook and Instagram back then. When someone wanted to disappear, it was a lot easier back then than it is now. This guy wasn't addicted to drugs and prostituting himself. Can't say the same for the other parent. Nowadays when a mother is addicted to meth, do you trust her more than a sober father in a custody battle?

My friend had a similar situation. He was mad at his father but his father never knew he existed. His mother never told the father that he had a son. To found out his father had one child that died in a car accident and never had another child cause of the situation was so heartbreaking. To found out he had another child. He was so appreciative of it. For 40 years this man was mad about a person who didn't know he existed. Crazy world
Never trust a woman, under all circumstances. Do so at your own detriment. And don't complain When you have baby, Do a DNA. Act logically always and not emotionally.
Tupac father knew he existed, he just never made an effort to see him until he was 23 shot in the hospital. The person who made an effort in some capacity during Tupac's childhood died. Afenie acknowledged him as Tupac's father. Afenie never barred Mr Garland from the hospital, never put him on child support. She just gave him the same effort he gave Tupac.
THIS is a PERFECT example as to why EVERY birth certificate should be backed by a DNA test!?!?! They already run lab/blood/dna test on the child so the ONLY other thing they gotta do is get a cotton swab from the father and THATS it.
@@NorrisFoxx That DNA didn’t feed Pac as a child, didn’t give Pac shelter as a child, didn’t protect Pac, that DNA didn’t teach Pac right from wrong. That DNA is fucking worthless

Pac definitely mentioned how he was mistreated as a child, him becoming a superstar changed a lot of how even his family perceived him. We hear a lot of revisionism nowadays but go to the actual source, Pac left a lot of his words here so there's no need to speculate. He even said he wanted to write a book detailing his pain. His sister Set was also mistreated. It wasn't all roses man and seeing Mr. Garland in the flesh speak to the part he played and etc is meaningful. Glad this was done that way no one else could tell his story for him.
Blessings from Ireland to Mr Garland. 💚 He reminds me alot of my Dad. I come from a broken home, you wouldn't believe the slander and toxic lies my mother and her 2 sisters spread about my Dad. Nobody is perfect. We all have our baggage and regrets, but to lie and say to Pac that his father was dead was unforgiveable and the catalyst to undeniable pain he carried throughout his young life. Whatever drama goes on between parents, the relationship and bond between parent and child should be unconditional and invested in without ego or ownership. Wish Pac was still here so he and his Dad had more time to put the past to rights and bond without barriers. I believe this man.
I’m so glad billy is alive and healthy; he’s the spitting image of Tupac his nose, jaw line, smile and mannerisms; it’s a shame afeni lied to Tupac all those years but at least Tupac met him as an adult.
When my brother married another woman his baby mother went crazy. They weren't even together but she couldn't stand him after that and wouldn't let him see his son

@@andreray2784 i hear you and that's good for you. There are many flavors and levels to these situations. The Mother played keep away with the child (on occasion) but the guy still saw the child, paid child support and was the best father he could be. The mother remarried and had kids with the new guy, The mother put the new guy through HELL but he stuck with her. All the kids saw the mother in action and think the mom is nuts. In the end, the first child resents her own father for not being there, the younger siblings can't understand why their father would even stay around. We that do our best do their best and end the end, the children will have their own understanding. By the way, the 2 fathers became friends and were talking at a christmas party at one of the kids' house. The kids are grown now. The guy that stayed told the guy that left "Man, you were smart as hell to get away from that chick, she's driving me crazy". lol sounds like a joke but its not. The guy who stayed wants his life back. He's proud to have done all he could for all the kids but other than that he is miserable and the kids know it. There are levels to it man. Good yours came out the way it did.
2Pac was a son husband who dealt with his life based on his emotions. Just think what his life would have been like if his father was in his life while he was growing up. His mother is wrong for hiding this from him.
Yep, @Amo Dog9k, I have thought about this many times, too. Would we have got the same 2Pac? Would we have ever got 2Pac? Idk, all I do know is I wish he was still here, badly.
@@Professor-Patti 2Pac was destined to make a significant impact. His potential to effect change in the world was always present, but it's worth considering how his journey might have been shaped differently if he hadn't endured the profound pain of his father's absence, the struggles with his crack addicted mother, his time spent on the streets, and the witnessing of unfairness and negative experiences while growing up. The hardships he faced were essential in molding him into the legendary revolutionary Tupac Shakur we know today, as they ignited a fire within him that led to his explosive transformation over the years. And that’s how life works, we humans are the result of the accumulation of experiences that we go through.
I was thinking the same . They are doing the true art and work pac would have wanted done by getting it from people whom everybody tried to demonize cause they wasn’t frontline with pac but definitely behind the scenes guiding him
@Dark and lovely Lovely lol well obviously. I don't take a shred of credit away from the mother Afeni was to her son either, never suggested so...my statement pertained ONLY to the platform giving a voice to his father to speak HIS TRUTH. I think Afeni was a brilliant, beautiful, incomparable soul. As a woman, as a black woman, as a revolutionary and as a mother. Period. Hard stop
Mr. Garland, congratulations that you can claim this title. What hurts more is raising a child alone. Struggling to feed them and provide for them. You should've claimed that title when he was born and contributed to his life & well-being the whole time. What do you need to do interviews for? Enjoy the rest of your life.
Wow! You can feel the passion and hurt in his voice! Yes, he too is at fault for his absence but it seems as if Afeni wasn’t that easy to deal with. My goodness, y’all have got to do better. Once a child is conceived and born, it should become about that child SOLELY! Not about your personal feelings. You see how detrimental it is!
@Cheyenne Respectfully, you make ir sound like it's that easy. Sometimes the relationship between mother and father is so toxic for whatever reason that it's just best to stay away. I would argue that both parties make better decisions before hooking up. Unfortunately, it seems that nothing in life (or very little of it) is perfect.
@@LeRoi33073 Looks like it wasn’t understood; Unless it’s truly detrimental to THE CHILD’S well-being; both parents should grow out of their personal feelings however if the parent/s are unable to grow up in sake of the child then the child should have full disclosure as to the reason for their absence. Ultimately both parties should make better decisions in those they procreate with. Another life isn’t a gamble, it’s nothing minor.
@Cheyenne I see what happened here. You made a general statement based off of Tupac's specific situation (which I agree with overall) but I was thinking more broadly in my response feeling that the statement won't apply for all situations due to the level of toxicity involved. I should have been clearer in my response. We're essentially on the same page: 1. people need to make better decisions on who they procreate with (the drama that follows otherwise can run extremely deep, literally last a lifetime and beyond) 2. Once you've procreated, it's no longer about "you".

Absolutely. Pac had childhood issues playing out in front of the world. Like flipping out on The Hughes Brother’s and getting kicked off a movie that would become a transcendent generational film
You gotta love this man, you can feel he’s so genuine, he deserved to have more precious time with his son. The bitterness and sadness he carries within him due to his son's untimely death are profoundly felt. This sentiment was also evident in the interview of his other son, 2Pac's biological brother from his father's side. Before his passing 2Pac was actively striving to develop a deeper connection and foster a stronger bond with his father's family. While showing him initial anger was a natural part of expressing the pain he endured growing up without his father, it is likely that, given time, he would have found a way to reconcile and show love to his father and other siblings. Unfortunately, his life was cut short, depriving all of them of that opportunity.

I really appreciate the fact that Billy mentions Yaki Kadafi. He's a true OG. I would really love it if Art Of Dialogue could invite Ms. Yaasmyn Fula, who was an integral part of Tupac's life, to talk about herself, her son Yaki Kadafi, and Tupac. Similarly, inviting Sekou Odinga, who was Yaki's father and a member of the Panther 21, would be interesting to hear him speak about his years as a Panther. It would provide valuable insights into Tupac's life and legacy, as well as shed light on the experiences of these individuals. I hope that the Art Of Dialogue team considers these suggestions and explores the possibility of inviting them to share their stories with the audience.
As a 40 year old mature man with a family of my own, I no longer have negative views on men who are not in their kids lives. I believe that everything works itself out for a reason. God allowed us to be in our current period in time, and I myself find many blessings in that❤🙌

My grandmother, did the same thing to my father. She didn't provide a name until he was in his 50's. He found his father in Florida, after a brief period of getting to know him by phone. Finds out he has a brother, then prepares to visit him and he passed away before he could schedule a flight. She's still angry at my grandfather today, she's nearly 90.
I go through the same shit as we speak my bm gets mad and keep my son from me for months leaving the kid thinking it's the dad just imagine how many kids and father's relationships are destroyed by these kind of actions
This hits home bro. I’m in the same boat. I have a 5 year old son and my bm and I do not get along at all, but I never gave up on my son. We would fight and she’d block me on everything and keep me from seeing him. If I’m not ‘nice’ to her and don’t give her money I’m not allowed to see my kid. So sometimes I just have to cave in just to spend a couple hours with him. She’s maniacal.
He could of signed something to say he didnt want the money and then take the DNA test... why wait until after he successful. Where was he when Tupac needed him? That DNA test should of been taken way back when, maybe he could of given some child support.. not as in the system but in actual fatherly support to his child.
He didn’t want any money but yet he still SUED the estate?? They said he got a settlement. If he didn’t want the money, then why did he accept the settlement?

speaking of Sekyiwa (Tupac’s sister), Sekiywa spoke about her relationship with Afeni and her childhood growing up with Tupac in the autobiography Jasmine Guy wrote. aside from her being a revolutionary, Afeni was a irresponsible and emotionally detached mother. yes as his father Billy should’ve been there for him no matter what but just because someone is considered a active parent doesn’t always make them a good parent. both Tupac and Sekyiwa deserved better.

@@MitchellelOfGH i understand. realistically, i think anyone would prefer having a emotionally detached parent vs not having one at all. technically, Afeni was also a absentee parent throughout their childhood. again, this is all documented in Afeni’s autobiography. Sekiywa had recalled her and Tupac being alone majority of the time because Afeni would be gone for weeks. but I guess being a part time parent counts as something? bright side is they both forgave her and developed a bond with her in their adult years. by the way, this is no way shape or form belittling the work and effort Afeni made to repair her relationships with her children. however, people should acknowledge two wrongs don’t make a right.
Afeni Shakur was no angel, thats why dear mama was written in the way it was
Great interview. He clearly has seen how you have respectfully documented Pac's life. It's good to hear from him and to know he isn't dead like social media had falsely put out. I hope he talks more about his background as a Black Panther and family.
Ok I just seen that he passed in 1999. I guess that's false
That’s ridiculous because she was with a pimp / hustler named legs not so long after 🙄
@Aidah Ward exactly mutula Shakur is who Pac thought was his dad he's Mopreme dad but not Pac Afeni led him to believe Mutula was his dad that's who she was dating

@Pason Jayne
Your anecdotal evidence doesn't equal a fact.

@Cheyenne Respectfully, you make ir sound like it's that easy. Sometimes the relationship between mother and father is so toxic for whatever reason that it's just best to stay away.

Lack of respect for the memory of the dead, still holds a grudge and is absolutely mad for not getting money. Wow, the guts to say these things! What a man!
That is true
My grandmother, did the same thing to my father. She didn't provide a name until he was in his 50's. He found his father in Florida, after a brief period of getting to know him by phone. Finds out he has a brother, then prepares to visit him and he passed away before he could schedule a flight.
She's still angry at my grandfather today, she's nearly 90.
Women can be so angry and bitter
He talking that talk 😂 he is right! Tupac looks like him. Tupac doesn't look like Afeni Shakur at all.
He doesn’t look like his mother at all….you sound stupid
U cap af Pac got Afeni smile and eyes
2pac was definitely a mixture of both
His entire face & features is Billy but he does have his mother's eyes & smile
You're insane,Pac got her eyes n smile...
Alot of good points are being made here. The main one I’ve learned is we can do better to start by choosing better partners to lay with.
I go through the same shit as we speak my bm gets mad and keep my son from me for months leaving the kid thinking it's the dad just imagine how many kids and father's relationships are destroyed by these kind of actions
😊😊😊😊😊
Take her to court for visitation rights. If she doesn't let you see your child with a court order custody might get turned over to you
This hits home bro.

Blood in blood out,TRUE blood don’t lie. Pac looks exactly like his father. If billy shaves his head bald y’all would look at a old Tupac. No cap
Facts
Yup
I think he doesn't shave his hair because people would come up to him & ask if he's 2Pac
There is an old interview of him being bald
He could of signed something to say he didnt want the money and then take the DNA test... why wait until after he successful. Where was he when Tupac needed him? That DNA test should of been taken way back when, maybe he could of given some child support.. not as in the system but in actual fatherly support to his child.
Tupac said when he woke up in the hospital bed after getting shot the 1st time he looked up and saw Billy and thought he was in heaven.
That's so cool that Delray did this interview for Art of Dialogue's channel. Very selfless. Respect!

That's exactly what I said lol
Absolutely.
And Billy’s mom
Look just alike. He look like his pops too
He didn’t want any money but yet he still SUED the estate?? They said he got a settlement. If he didn’t want the money, then why did he accept the settlement?
He had no interest in Pac until he became famous..
I learned one thing in my 35 years, most men want to be apart of their kids life. But the woman wants to be the overseer and the principal figure to the point that the man has to let the kid go just to avoid the mothers wrath, manipulation and pettiness.
a part* not apart. Apart means separate
Everybody know this lol

@@domino2oh-riginal what does biology have to do with politics. Biology existed before politics. Or maybe I don't understand your pov. Could you explain how this is a political thing?
I don't even need a DNA test to prove he's Tupac's father bc he looks just like him.
💯 I really needed this 💯
Don't lie and mislead people is why I'm so antisocial and a loner but a leader and it hurts cause of inner wars brought to reality ✊🏾
As a father, he is the only person in this world that doesn’t want a suit or some memorabilia. He wants his goddamn son! I feel your pain Mr. Garland. Much respect sir
No, he wanted half of his son’s estate. Listen at what he said: “it may have value on eBay or something”. He has one thing on his mind and that was Tupac’s money.
@@AprilCampbell Yup! He sued Afeni when Pac passed away.
He did not want Tupac ! Afeni is not here to counter his story.

That shit hurt as A Father to see how hurt that Man was… In the Black community Momma ain’t never wrong… It’s always Daddy Fault!!!
Tupac will still be alive if his father was in his life 💯
Exactly, he looked at Suge as a father figure, I've noticed I can believe this man, if he was about the money, why all these years he never tried to sue Tupac when he was alive? Why didn't he sue for back pay? Any other person would've used that tactic.
SUGE was tapuc handler
Yep
Truth
Pac thought the guy was his father was a junkie but it was actually this dude
GTF outta here… this man gave Tupac a bag of Peanuts, a Rollerball ticket and about $800 in his whole life, according to Afeni and now he want half. Keep talking about she held him back from his dad… he had a choice too. He saying hisself he knew that he was the father, but he married someone else. I would’ve dismissed his ass too and raised him alone. She raised an ICON and a LEGEND. Pac loved his mother and he sitting here trying to throw her under the bus. He should be proud of Afeni for the wisdom and intellect she instilled in their son, something he said he could NOT do. He wouldn’t have nothing to do with Pac if he didnt make it in this world. We all have flaws but ninja just say you wasn’t there because you couldn’t be. Period, just keep it Real Billy, you know why she was mad. You pregnantated her, you said she wanted to be with you but you left her. Miss me with the rest
My children's mother acted this way. She left me but didn't want to see me move in or be happy. She lied a lot in court. Coincidentally(not really) bad things kept happening to her and her family but excluded my children. Guess God is on my side a d doesn't like tbe evil she's constantly committed against me and my family. 🤷♂️

Amazing how so many of us can relate to this scenario in some fashion.
Tupac would have been alive with his guidance
I have to live with that thought the rest of my life
@William Garland I feel your pain brother I’m going through the same thing right now and it’s the hardest thing that I’ve ever been through in my life because I have been there for my son from day one until I broke up with his mother and she can’t move on so she uses him to punish me.
2:57 hits HARD. We have a HUGE problem in our society where women will treat men like less of a man because they can’t support them YET.
This drives a lot of good black boys to the streets!
It’s also crazy how Tupac, who we know as an international superstar, (even posthumously) went thru the EXACT same struggles as you or I would growing up black.
Salute. This is the problem in our community. Unfit mothers lying 🤥 to the children to mask their own foolishness. 2Pac is definitely smiling
What? He just said he chose not to raise his son and THAT is the problem.
@@honeyasonja522 bruh stop. His mother lied told her son he was dead. Common in the blk community also she chose to smoke crack instead of raising her children. This is the problem in the blk community. Like it or not...sis! 🌚🥩
Sad that regardless of how brilliant Afeni Shakur was she still acted like a typical baby mama.
Facts smh
damn #bars
I mean this is just what Billy says. Fact is, he was out of Tupac's life until he realized he was a movie star. Not saying anything caused that, but the fact is, he had a clean 16 or 17 years to reach out to or locate Tupac, and for whatever reason, he didn't do so until after he saw Juice. Afeni had every right to be skeptical and have doubts, and now she's not here to say anything else.
@@MEDICI92 maybe he couldn’t reach out, I mean it wasn’t like it is now back then.. him being a movie star and shit was probably his way to get in touch with him easier
🤡
This breaks my heart! It’s very important that kids know their parents. Kids suffer its bigger than the parents they need to know what they face health wise personality wise and so on. My favorite rapper the GOAT had a very hard upbringing and to make it out and become successful it’s simply amazing.
It’s his fault that he didn’t know tupac
If your not watching, but listening. You can hear Pac in his father. Crazy interview!
speaking of Sekyiwa (Tupac’s sister), Sekiywa spoke about her relationship with Afeni and her childhood growing up with Tupac in the autobiography Jasmine Guy wrote. aside from her being a revolutionary, Afeni was a irresponsible and emotionally detached mother. yes as his father Billy should’ve been there for him no matter what but just because someone is considered a active parent doesn’t always make them a good parent. both Tupac and Sekyiwa deserved better.
I’d rather a “emotionally detached” parent than an absentee parent any day of the week..
@@MitchellelOfGHExactly! Everyone in her saluting that deadbeat he left Pac out there when Afeni was in drugs. He did nothing for Pac at all so don’t blame Afeni because this clown is just looking for his 10 minutes of fame. Why come out years after Afeni died and Pac died? Why not come out years ago. I swear this generation will fall for anything.
Billy being a deadbeat doesn’t justify Afeni being a neglectful parent.
@@MitchellelOfGH 💯. This man began this interview saying he "chose" not to raise him 🤦♀️🙄.
