For all the people out there, when i met my father- he said the exact same thing. My mom was playing games and kidnapped us & kept us away from him. We would never stay in the same place for long. Drastic moves from state to state during the school year. Finally met the man and he told us everything.
The pain i felt is still hard to describe.
I only knew something was fishy when i asked for his family’s address to send them graduation invites when i graduated college. I didnt expect them to come but i at least wanted them to know that i put myself through college.
The woman wouldnt give me any addresses or phone numbers for him or his family until AFTER my graduation. Then suddenly she had all these phone numbers when i had asked for months.
These women are truly vicious out here.

As a father, we make mistakes. Some worse than others. So I can’t judge this man for what he did or didn’t do. That’s between him and his son, Tupac. R.I.P. Who unfortunately was taken from him before they could truly make amends and build a relationship. I can tell that Mr. Garland holds on to a lot of pain and regret. Telling his story I hope can give him some kind of closure and heal some of his wounds. His son is an Icon and is still missed to this day. The G.O.A.T. Tupac Amaru Shakur.

Touched the souls of so many across the world. In South Africa, you couldn't go anywhere for at least 5 years without someone playing some Tupac, especially after funerals. I even remember watching a documentary or film about rebels in some country playing Pac in the military vehicle IN THE JUNGLE. No hiphop artist has had that type of reach.

I'm glad he's finally speaking his side, and being able to tell it in an unfiltered/uncensored way. Doesn't sugarcoat anything, admits faults on his part, and just brutally honest. He is speaking facts - Karen Lee Pacs old publicist knew Tupac since he was a couple of weeks old baby. So Billy must have known her well too.
My father disappeared for years after my mother kicked him out when i was three. I finally caught up with him at 17 where he worked at the mall as a janitor and my mom spotted him. Passed by him a millions times not knowing he was pops. He died before i could know the truth.

Though Afeni did what she could under the circumstances, she did Pac no favours by not telling him the truth and you can hear it in his music. If you know anything about the Black Panthers, he couldn't really investigate his whereabouts because at the time, a lot of the Panthers were in hiding from the FBI, so to really open an investigation to find Afeni and Tupac might have put her freedom in jeopardy, so i fully understand what he's saying. Billy’s story is not that dissimilar to my story with my baby mother.
It’s as if society has painted a picture of the black family being capable of surviving without the black man. All the suffering and even his death could’ve been prevented had Pac and his father had a healthy relationship.
Pac died retaliating on behalf of the gang he was with. All he wanted to do was portray an image that validated what he thought was manhood; an image that basically his mother implanted. Being outspoken, defending women, not taking no shit.
Then look what happened; he started talking about hoes and money, got convicted of rape, and was killed by a gang member. Afeni denying his father a relationship may have inadvertently got him killed.

There's a YT clip of Tupac talking to MTV reporter Tabitha Soren about Billy Garland. He said Garland explained why he wasn't in his life. Soren asked Pac why he hadn't taken a blood test to confirm that Garland was his father. Pac said because it was "scary", and he wouldn't love Garland any more or any less regardless of the result. Pac said he believed that Garland was his father, because of their resemblance and he also looked like Garland's biological children.
Afeni Shakur described Billy Garland as "A sperm donor... He was the first in line to siphon Tupac's money." She talked about Jasmine Guy and Jada Pinkett supporting her challenge to a lawsuit Garland filed for money from Pac's estate.
"Billy Garland tried to inherit half of Tupac's estate after he died. The judge ruled that he couldn't inherit because his contributions to Tupac's care and support were 'miniscule'.
"Testimony showed that Mr. Garland's documented contributions to Tupac's care included $820, a bag of peanuts and a ticket to Rollerball.
"Me. Garland says the reason he sued for half of the estate is because Afeni put that he was dead on the probate papers. 'Probate papers' are a legal document that shows banks and other organizations that you have authority to deal with someone's estate. Afeni was wrong for keeping him away and lying to Tupac. She probably knew that as well. She wanted the truth about her story to be told even the flaws.
I’m just happy Mr. Garland is doing interviews because he is appreciated. He is a panther and that alone deserves a book and interview. I hope they invite him back to talk more about his panther days.

In the utmost respect for the man himself and those who knew him. You are such a big part in his legacy living on also, I believe the final statement his dad saying that he was a leader and influential that was a contribution to his demise.. another person spoke on it and the street shit is real surface level but when you understand the black royalty and strength he came from and what the powers that he wanted to control especially when you have a charismatic natural leader spitting facts proud linage of black panthers..

A beautiful interview with such integrity it is so important that you mentioned how your story and pacs aligned with being lied to by mothers, it’s a difficult thing single parenthood but clouded by other thoughts or intentions for the child’s dad.. nobody wins in the family feud a sad but common story.
Never heard his full unedited story. He makes a ton of sense. We as sons of of split up parents take our mothers words as law. Growing up if she would have told me we lived on the moon I’d believe it. It’s a shame that he missed out on all those years with his son.

Excellent interview, I am so glad that he finally found his son and was able to start building a relationship with him before his untimely demise. As for Afeni, I feel that she deprived 2Pac of his biological father. Just listening to him in this interview I can tell that he would have played a intricate roll in his life. Afeni also cost him the relationship he could have had with his other family. May both 2Pac and Afeni RIP. Women your Not a real woman or Mother if have done this to your child!
No disrespect to Afeni but it’s crazy how she lied and tried to keep Mr.Garland away from Pac, no telling how Pac’s life would’ve turnt out if he would’ve met his father years before hand, I just can’t believe how some mothers really try to tell their kids how their father is dead when in reality it’s not true and when the father trys to contact the kid, the mother always trying to get involved and not let it happen
My mother did this to me. I'm in my 30s and still haven't met my dad but I literally long for him DAILY. My mother tells me he's dead but I know it's not true. She won't even tell me his name.

He meant to say that it’s a very difficult thing when you got a rich millionaire son out there that you can’t find and that you can’t call. Typical response from a dead beat dad. Even pac literally said out his own mouth while alive in an interview that his biological father wanted nothing to do with him his entire life until he found out his son was wealthy. That is crazy.
