    More thoughts on the project: We really thing that patching and repairing drywall is something anyone can do! Little holes are particularly easy with spackle, but even using mesh patches, patching compound, and chunks of drywall weren't too hard! And it really does make a huge different in the appearance of your walls. Topped with a fresh coat of paint, it makes a huge difference for a beginner/easy project.

    When I was 16 I was playing video games at my cousin's house and accidentally knocked a hole in his bedroom wall. My aunt and uncle weren't there, so we quickly improvised a wall patch... a piece of cardboard from a Coca Cola box and some joint compound. Worked like a charm because 15 years later my aunt and uncle are still none the wiser to what happened.

    You can also store a wet roller and brushes in plastic bags, assuming they don't have holes. Pop them in the fridge, but don't ever let latex or other water based house paint freeze. I don't know exactly what happens, but the paint turns into something like cottage cheese and becomes useless. I think the paint solids start to congeal when the water is frozen out, and it never goes back to a smooth liquid state.
    Oil based paint is my personal favorite. Because it dries slowly, it tends to level out very nicely and produces a very even surface. The downside is that it takes days to dry to the touch and months to fully cure. You have to get it right in one go, because once it starts to set up it does exactly what happens at 5:40. The paint oxodizes as it dries, so you wind up tearing and dragging around a very thin skin of drying paint on a mushy wet surface. You have to apply oil paint thinly and let it at least get to a tacky state before putting on another coat. If you get drips, you have to address them immediately. Rollers are pretty terrible for oil based paint because they don't lay down paint very evenly at the edges. With a brush you have 100% control and the better flow of oil paint makes it excellent for trim and detail work.
    I'm glad that you didn't blame the paint immediately for the fail and chalked it up to a learning experience. To be honest, modern acrylic and latex paints are just as good as oil based paint now, in terms of durability. I still prefer oil for it's silkier feel, but better quality latex paint will last just as long.
    That being said, Behr is complete garbage. My preferred brands are Pittsburgh and Benjamin Moore. Valspar and Olympic are alright for big box brands.

    protip that i learned from home renovision, with nail/screw holes or tiny holes in your wall, make a divet directly on it either using a small hammer or the back of a nail punch tool. this way, your spackle/compound is recessed rather than "over" the hole and you won't have to feather it out too much to make it even. it's the same principle as when they install drywall and slightly divet in the head of a screw.

    For future reference, oil based paint goes super smooth on a door using mini rollers applying thick coats in straight lines from top to bottom of the door going from the hinges’ side towards the door handle’s side with the roller’s loose edge towards the side that you already painted (so the edge with the metal bit doing a bit of a L shape should be towards the side you need to pain because that is the side where you apply the most pressure on and therefore the side that creates the most streaks)... not sure that makes too much sense just reading it but if you try it out it will make more sense and you will get a perfect finish! Also I am super impressed my your patching skills, most home renovation channels got it wrong but you guys did everything right! As someone who worked in construction/renovation as a painter this makes me very very happy :)

    I like what you did here. My garage/workshop walls are textured/finished so it won't look great if I ever have to do a repair like this but I am glad I learned the technique from you two. Keep up the great work!

      +Brandon's Bees thank you!! I think they do make texture sprays (usually sold at Home Depot near the drywall repair stuff) so depending on your texture, it could still work!

    One of my favorite things to do when I find a channel I really like is to go back and see what their first videos looked like. Your videos are great and this is not a criticism but I am glad yall went from HGTV to let's put googly eyes on the trash can and build an entire counter top out resin that looks like a beach. Keep up the great work I am enjoying the vids and learning a lot.

    This was great to watch in case I ever have to fix plasterboard in a future house but personally would rip out the centre first at 2:39 to see if there's anything electrical behind it first so I know it's safe to cut the square outline with a knife ;)

    Thank you guys! Wife and I are enjoying your videos, keep em coming! We've seen some people putting joint compound before the drywall tape and then putting joint compound again once the tape is on. Apparently that helps with potential "bubbling" down the road. Supposedly it's better to do that in a room (garage) where temperatures can fluctuate easier. Just a thought.... not so sure how much it bubbles. Looking forward to more videos!

    • @EvanAndKatelyn
      @EvanAndKatelyn  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Manny Lidie thank you!! We do plan to keep lots more coming!! Hmmm that's a really interesting tip. We will keep an eye on how ours holds up and if it seems to bubble maybe we can do an update video :)

    • @jimbendtsen8841
      @jimbendtsen8841 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paper tape can bubble if the compound under the paper tape isn't wet enough, and even if it is, it's better if the paper tape is moist. Dry paper tape on too thick compound is the problem, if the compound dries before the tape is really attached to it.
