  • In today's video, you'll learn about how to patch drywall and discover several tips that will lead you to a successful project. Knowing how to patch drywall could be one of the smartest skill sets you learn. You might feel unnerved by the site of damaged drywall, but the price to have it repaired by a pro outweighs this inconvenience.
Years ago I paid about $600 for a 5 by 5 foot section of ceiling to be replaced. While I was grateful to my contractor it definitely hurt my wallet. For some reason I thought that patching the ceiling was out of my DIY league. That said, I also knew that having the audacity to challenge myself in the art of drywalling would come in handy. Not to mention save me some major dinero.

Just what I needed. Great job, Jeff! Thank you. I am a retired journeyman/finish carpenter and general contractor, but no one ever learns everything. Decided to freshen up my memory for a very similar repair at home, and I am SO GLAD I found you. This is short, concise, accurate, and right on the money. Your sense of humor helps to make the video more enoyable and easy to absorb. I subscribed, and I'll be joining your email list. :)

I actually used this video the Fall of 2014 to help when I had to replace a section of water stained ceiling drywall. This helped me when I had to do drywall replacement work for the first time. I wanted to say you simply explained the basics of drywall repair and made seem easy for any first timer. Nice work and thanks so much!

Thank you for this video Jeff! I already repaired two sections due to leaks and now I have a tub drain leak that caused a section I just repaired to be removed again!! I was so angry I was just going to hire someone to repair the drywall again but after watching this video, some of the tricks you showed me really opened my eyes!! I absolutely hate trying to match the shape but I was doing it backwards by trying to trim the new drywall piece to my hole size. I am going to try your method and also make my own joint compound instead of buying it and maybe I will enjoy the repair this time haha yeah right, but thank you!!! You saved me hundreds!

Just saw this and I know it's a long time since anyone else posted anything but I have to do a repair in a drywall (plasterboard here in the U.K.) ceiling and all the vids I've seen before are all pro's doing the repair and they make it look so easy but I know it isn't. I've never done plastering b4.
This video really really helped me... nice screen idea instead of paper tape and tips on making it look good....will look out for any others you have done.

Good video, but never jam the dry wall into place. It puts stress on the area that is being jammed, most likely the corners. Also when doing a repair like this make a cardboard template and lay it across the hole. When installing your precut drywall, if it is too tight use a multitool to trim the sides. It can just shave it down without taking out big chunks. I also always drill at least an inch away from the corners and sides. Those things that I've mentioned are just some other tips. Good job.

Excellent video Jeff. I'm not the guy you usually ask to help do home repairs and don't have a lot of skills. After watching this video (3 times) I set out to do this exact repair (water damaged ceiling 3'x4'). Except for my texturing method, it worked perfectly. Thanks.

+J. Craig Hood don't worry, I'm not perfect at texture. It's a total art. Good to hear you saved money DIYing!!

Pleasant demeanor, helpful, honest, concise, good tips. Thank you! Would you recommend the "drywall tape, the sticky screen type" that another commenter mentioned, or not? If not, reason(s)? Also, was the bolster piece of wood added to the joist screwed & glued, or just screwed?

The screen bend is genius, yet so simple. Works great on stairs as well.
