@@alancoldicott391 floatation airbags would not have saved this boat, stopping the leak and the pump prevented it from sinking, lucky they were close to shore, just goes to show how an intake hose rupture could put this huge vessel at risk like this, the crew need to do some research so they can quickly repair something like this themselves
Same thing happened to me on my schooner. The hose to the engine water pump came off and I didn't notice it until the boat started feeling "sluggish" and I felt little air puffs coming up through the floorboards. I checked the bilge and it was a bit over half-full of seawater, so that sent me on a manic sprint to the engine room. Luckily, the water was still far below the diesel, so I fixed the hose and helped the "overwhelmed" electric bilge pump with the manual Whale "Gusher 30" (30 gpm manual lever diaphragm pump). Didn't take long to get things working right again. After that, I installed a float switch buzzer alarm about half-way up the bilge pocket so I'd have an 'early' warning next time something like that happens.
I'm "downsizing" from the 53-foot steel schooner to a 25-foot Westerly Centaur that I sailed about 12-15 years ago. It's been in my barnyard as a "project" ever since and now I'm working out how I want to refit it. It's a 48 year old boat and I'm a 68 year old sailor, so we'll be "age compatable," I guess. I plan to install one or two electric bilge pumps, but will also have a Whale Gusher 30 or a Gusher 10 fitted and plumbed through a cockpit locker to the bilge so that it can be operated by me from the helm if I have to dewater the boat while still sailing if some kind of accident or disaster happens that the electric pumps won't work. I'll also have a 36-inch (stroke) West Marine style bilge pump as well. @@dimitriacrosse2468

@@dmsasser Yeah seriously. On another note, would be really cool if these companies did a TH-cam channel and we got to see their days. Must be an interesting, exciting and competitive job.
My thoughts exactly !! First, Towboats rammed into vessel. If i was the standing captain/owner, i would be pissed, sinking or not. Itowboats plp put a plan in instantly resulting yacht returning under it's own power with water pumping assist. And footage was super !! And viewing from my comfy mancave/shop from northern MN expecting 8-15" snow in next couple days.
My dad had a similar problem on our boat when I was 17 (edit:1970). We were out fishing and as we were motoring from drop to drop the engine suddenly started to run rough and the boat was obviously taking water. We had no radio but there were dozens of boats all around us. I was blasting my emergency horn and not one single boat would stop to help us. We actually had one 40' cabin cruiser pull up along side and I told him we were taking on water and had no propulsion. I thought he would help us get to shore but his wife yelled at him to keep going and he motored off. Finally my dad, a great fixer of anything, opened up the engine compartment, examined the situation, found the intake hose that has broken off of it's fitting and with some rags shoved it back in place and held it so that I could pilot our little 19' doubled ended lapstrake converted 1940 USN launch safely to port. Hoses matter, and so do thru-hulls. Kudos to that responder who immediately tossed in the pump hose and prevented the yacht from sinking.
"...But his wife yelled at him to keep going and he motored off." I guess there was no shortage of willfully gutless weenie men terrified of upsetting their wives back then either! Glad your dad didn't fall into that category and got after it, like dads should!
In USA any one can be captain as we see...poorly executed emergency. They should have placed all the passengers at the bow to try to level the pressure on the stern as to buy some time from water intake. Life vests are missing also...
I was thinking the same thing. Also there was zero sense of urgency to do anything and no pumps working. That could be done switching on a generator or even batteries
@The_Touring_Jedi Stop being an ignorant anti-American bigot spouting ignorant derp. There are a number of regulations and requirements to become licensed to captain a yacht carrying paying passengers.

Must see video. Danger, drama, conflict, and comedy (itow captain) on the high seas, with outstanding ground/air coverage; and the best boat won! Enjoyed from couch by LI Sound in CT.
Usually you’re supposed to wear a Coast Guard approved PFD when the boat starts taking on water, no matter the amount. Water does things to boats and causes things to fail, this should always be in the mind of a good and well trained captain. While white smoke does not mean fire, it is still the best thing to wear a PFD just in case anything else occurs that could injure or risk the safety of any who are aboard the vessel.
Thank you for a great video. I agree with most of the other viewers. I cannot add anything different. Great rescue. I am a ex Navy guy and a boat owner in my younger years. I can sympathize with the people involved in this rescue. Thank you again and keep them coming.

Well, since the yacht had not been abandonned, I’d guess that “salvage rights” were not yet in effect so it was up to the captain to determine who got the work of pumping and towing. As the first “rescuer” did nothing and apparently had no pumping gear with him, he had zero claims.
Yeah, it wasn't a salvage, but I bet the yacht owner gets a $5k bill - which he will gladly pay!! I had TowboatUS insurance when I had a boat, would not have cost me anything.
@@bretlyons5855 I do not understand WHY $5K was charged by TBUS. Was that for damage when the yatch ran into the front of his boat? If the yacht cptn PHONED TBUS, then some compensation was due. White smoke and the boat is sinking and I still do not see anyone with a life vest on. WTF? Ok steam from water getting on something hot like the exhaust manifold. It boggles my mind that people are arguing with me that "I" think if a boat is sinking people should put PFDs on.
Boat didn't sink. White smoke doesn't mean fire. I'd imagine everyone without a vest on probably can swim. Seriously?? Fn armchair quarterbacks at it again...
2000 pounds of water in a minute is enough and it does not need big pump for such ammount. Anyway that guy was expirienced and acted instantly as a proffesional. Great action on site.

My guess- the boat blew a raw water intake hose, got an overheat alarm at the wheelhouse and the captain shut down both engines. That was the steam we saw in the beginning. The itow captain probably discovered this after pumping the water down and probably just closed the valve to that engine. Then he was able to restart the 2nd engine which was probably fine. He saved the day for sure. I’m a bit surprised that the captain of that yacht didn’t make any attempt to identify and close the valve. He may have been too focused on getting everyone off. Those people all seemed so relaxed. None of them seemed to interested in finding the cause of the flooding either. None of them were probably boaters or mechanical. Great footage !
TowboatUS came in hot, didn't go into action very quick. He saw a sinking ship and still nothing. Itowboats came in second but that pump was hooked up in a minute pumping out water. He went straight into action. I thought TowboatUS would have put in a second pump but I didn't see it happen. I don't see this being salved. Easy fix if it can get to a lift. Great video as always.
This is one of the few channels that I have subscribed to. Your camera work, equipment, editing, and clarity, are all fantastic. Great work. On the towboat discussion, Itowboats may have gotten there after, but he proved himself from the moment they both arrived, that he was much more competent. I’m also surprised by the number of things these little towboats and captains can do. I do didn’t look like he was in great shape at first, but then, when you see what he does for a living, and how physical the job is, he is in far better shape than most of us. haha!
I caught that, too. "Oh, where's my purse? It's got all my make up in it, and my phone. You and your kid can get the next ride." She didn't even think of herself! (No life jacket.)
Probably mentioned but the lack of anyone putting on a life jacket after calling an emergency is just astonishing to watch. Especially loading that child to travel in that tiny boat through the hazardous inlet. Father Neptune must have a far greater tolerance for the folks in their prestige boats off the Florida coast than elsewhere. He is probably just resigned to being perpetually ignored and signs of any seamanship a faint hope.
@@mistyrobinson4802 It is against the law in many places. I'm not sure if Florida has a life vest law or not.. but they obviously should! The number of kids going through those inlets without one is insane. Get rich, buy a boat and act lobotomized.

Usually first on scene gets the tow,but ya gotta b ready to prevent boat from sinking if u can,or nobody will b towing b cuz the boat Will sink! Thank God the stocky kid showed up,he saved that boat!
ITOWBOATS was the clear winner in this one. He acted fast, started pumping the water out and didn't crash into the boat like TowBoatUS. I'm sure the owner of the vessel will see this video and see if any damage was done to the vessel. TowBoatUS guy had to be new. He didn't know what to do. I'm sure this will be a teachable moment for him once the owner and his trainer get a hold of the video. Outstanding job on all other who responded.
Very well done. To anyone in that situation. Immediately put Life jackets on everyone. The second tow captain was well equipped and prepared. If the TowUS had a pump and deployed it he’d have a good case to keep the salvage. You can’t tow it if it’s on the bottom.
Just make sure you get your annuals and have all of your thru-hulls and raw water hoses thoroughly inspected. His bilge pumps are likely the right size but they can only keep up with so much intrusion.
iTowBoats was definitely an experienced pro. The way he pulled up perfect and immediately took action and got in the water to see what the problem was while the TowboatsUs dude pulled in way to hot and almost broke through the side window.
Normally it’s the first vessel on the scene, which is probably why the red boat bumped first. But I believe technically it’s the first vessel to offer assistance, that would be the green boat. But ultimately I believe as long as life is not in jeopardy, it’s up to the captain of the distressed vessel, unless of course the coast guard intervenes. Just my thoughts
TowBoatUS just stood around and watched. ITowBoats landed and got right to work to save the vessel. TowBoatUS should have had the pump going by the time ITowBoats got there. ITowBoats FTW
Great coverage! As a yacht captain who has been shipwrecked in the Bahamas, I get the story. Its not first on the scene, but the first to give aid. Additionally, if a towboat shows up and you set your troubled vessel on a sandbar to keep it from going to the bottom, then its a salvage and not a tow. In this case, had the boat just lost power, it would be a tow. But, since it was taking on water and had to be evacuated, then it became a salvage. If you ever loose power, drop anchor and call for help. DO NOT put you vessel on the beach unless you have a way of fixing it and getting it back into the water. Sigh.
That was wild. Good video. Legally, I think the TowBoatUS guy had the right to the salvage, but the iTowboat Captain is the one who is responsible for saving the vessel.
If I owned that vessel .that means I'm ok in life lol I'd say I'd pay itow and if towboat billed me I'd take them to court and waste their money. The captain was not competent what so ever. Itow was tied up and pumping before towboat had 2 ropes on.
us acting like he could actually hold up a argument there for a bit but even the captain chose itow, us needs better responders i’m sure they’ll see this. itow is solving situations before they’re bigger of course he gets the win either way.
1:59 My man rolled up way too hot for any good purpose. Look how hard he gets jostled against the console when he hit. He was on the radio, not paying attention to running the boat. He could have broke that window… then proceeded to do nothing.
Towboatus captain is just talk, bumps into the vessel and watches it to sink not even rescuing passengers. Meanwhile Itowboat captian is getting to work immediatly, pumping water and inspecting the damage from under the vessel like a pro.
Awesome that after winning the debate and getting to retain the job he looks up at the drone and flexes for the audience. LOL that dude is probably pretty chill. They both seemed to keep their cool to be fair, despite the obvious disagreement.
Coulda been a water hose to cool the engine since we saw steam in the beginning. Maybe the water pump was pulling water into the boat at an alarming rate or the Hi temp sensor went off and they shut off the engines. But if the engines were running good I agree - I'd be hauling azz back to haulover - or a sandbar near shore.
It’s amazing that the captain of the boat seemed to have waited for help to fix his problem.I have a 4500 gph portable pump and 25 feet of hose on my boat in case I’m ever near someone who is taking on water,I can’t understand how anyone with a boat that size couldn’t have solved that problem on their own.Maybe he should take up golf😏
Very lucky to have the boat distress so close to land and support, during daylight and in such a calm sea. Change one and this will be very different. Next time everybody in life vest is first order. Even the ladies evacuated in the raft were in big danger, none had vests and they did not seem to br fit to float for long…thanks God it all went ok
Usually first on scene, butt that "captain" did nothing to facilitate saving the vessel! iTowBoats immediately deployed his pump apparatus and inspected the hull for a breach there by keeping the vessel from parking on Davey Jones locker! In the end the proper salvage was exercised. Great job by the iTowBoats Captain! 👍 😎

I don’t know what the protocol is, but that first guy seemed to have no idea what to do. The second guy got right to it with pumping out the boat and finding out what the problem was. He seemed to have a much better grasp of the situation and saved the boat. I’m going to go with the second tow boat. Glad no one was hurt. ☮️
I wonder if the second guy had floatation airbags and swam under to see if they were needed. The more experienced TowboatsUS captains do carry them, but in this case it seemed that the first one was panicking.
@@geoffh4578----- Wrong :----flotation airbags could certain;y have saved it. You need enough of them, that's all---and an air pump of course.

The boat pumping the water out is keeping it afloat 💯👍🏼
Same thing happened to me on my schooner. The hose to the engine water pump came off and I didn't notice it until the boat started feeling "sluggish" and I felt little air puffs coming up through the floorboards. I checked the bilge and it was a bit over half-full of seawater, so that sent me on a manic sprint to the engine room. Luckily, the water was still far below the diesel, so I fixed the hose and helped the "overwhelmed" electric bilge pump with the manual Whale "Gusher 30" (30 gpm manual lever diaphragm pump). Didn't take long to get things working right again. After that, I installed a float switch buzzer alarm about half-way up the bilge pocket so I'd have an 'early' warning next time something like that happens.
good idea; *i had that wired to the horn when the boat stayed at the marinas...*
Great idea thanks so much
I'm "downsizing" from the 53-foot steel schooner to a 25-foot Westerly Centaur that I sailed about 12-15 years ago.

Good to see the crew of the yacht keeping calm and having control over the situation. Didn't look like people were in a panic.
However, that TowBoatUS guy was pathetic. He didn't jump in to do anything, and then gets upset that the other company comes along and takes over? It didn't even look like the guy on the yacht wanted his help.

ITowBoats FTW. He immediately got a pump hose up. HE saved that boat. He even went so far as to go under and see if he could find the problem.

Pump guy needs a reward and commendation ,for efficient, fast thinking and action ! 👍🙏

At least the TowBoatUS captain got a free lesson out of the deal. I hope he eventually took notes..and then went and practiced his approaches.
It’s jaw dropping to see how quickly this happens and for such mundane things. A hose sinks a million dollar boat.

Exactly right. You hit all the key points. Itowboats and the police knew what they needed to do, yacht crew and TowboatUS seemed lost.
Sounds exactly right based on what I observed. Captain could have saved himself a lot of money by acting to save his own yacht.

iTowBoats was definitely an experienced pro.
I believe the subject boat would have to be farther out to sea for typical no cure no pay salvage rules to be apply
Sure would have been nice to hear their conversation !

TowBoatUS just stood around and watched. ITowBoats landed and got right to work to save the vessel. TowBoatUS should have had the pump going by the time ITowBoats got there. ITowBoats FTW
He actually did more, he rammed--right in the window.
he showed up with no pump thats why he stood on his boat with his thumb up his ass talking to his boss on the phone "whut I do now boss?"
itowboats! acted immediately and earned it.
Good camera work, especially from that distance.
Sigh.
I'm sure the captain just paid them for the tow and pumping the water out.
So a salvage crew can get the rights to your boat in a situation like this??
Or besschh it top soeed
That was wild. Good video. Legally, I think the TowBoatUS guy had the right to the salvage, but the iTowboat Captain is the one who is responsible for saving the vessel.
If I owned that vessel .that means I'm ok in life lol I'd say I'd pay itow and if towboat billed me I'd take them to court and waste their money. The captain was not competent what so ever. Itow was tied up and pumping before towboat had 2 ropes on.

So their motor cut out on them? Because I would have been hauling but back to the dock
Maybe that's his first interest and boating is just something that he can afford, dollars and sense ya kno
I noticed that the assumed crew (white T-shirts) didn't don life jackets. Poor example.
