- Doug Demuro be like: THIS is a car, and today I'll be showing you all it's quirks and features, and when I'm done reviewing instead of giving it a Doug score, I'll bust out a lawn chair and proceed to watch in enjoyment as I single handedly drive up the value with just my video alone.
Former Average calculations were made using prices from 2015 with a data set of 100 cars (20 per entry in this video) nationwide on Cargurus, and then averaging that out with Kelley Blue Book's Value at the time. *Note: for the 240SX, I ignored the KBB value as like with any classic car, it vastly undershot it's value due to grandma's using it as a daily. KBB is also wrong with other cars like Classic Corvettes, Mustangs, and really any old collectible car, as it fails to accommodate any vehicle that's achieved collector status.
Current Average Calculations were made using prices from 2020 on Cargurus, with a data set of 100 cars Nationwide from the United States only. I also looked at some Autotrader examples as well. Again KBB value was ignored for the 240SX due to same aforementioned above.

Bladed Angel I’d suggest the mk4 Toyota Supra, I get that the movie Fast and Furious skyrocketed the price, but I do think the internet had some play in it also
Not a car guy car, but Toyota FJ Cruisers cost way more than they did a few years ago. Even 13 year old FJ Cruisers can cost over 16k with close to 200k miles on them.
I know that Doug made a video on them and Scotty mentioned them at least a few times too.

Yup, got my 1.6 NB for 4k, a decent 1.8 NB (quite rare in the EU) goes for at least 6k.

@@BladedAngel My cousin's grand dad had a Crown Vic for 20 years. He bought new, and kept it until he couldn't drive anymore. Still looked brand new.
The old regal gs with the supercharger or the lacrosse super with the V8 are good sleepers.

"Drift tax" also refers to the fact fewer cars exist on the market in stock form, or in general, because they have all been ruined by drifters over the years. It doesn't just refer to hype...
Drifting is cool, but man, "drift build" these days always seems to refer to a clapped out RWD car that has been practically destroyed and poorly maintained.

It likely won't. Even though it sold more units in their final year than the SS did for the entire production run, people still don't know what a G8 is. There was a flare up about it in 2008 at release and then most wrote it off as just another Pontiac. Even at car shows people look at them and say, " What's a Pontiac doing here?"

The only thing the 240sx really has going for it is it's drift capability, if you truly like the simplicity of it than there are plenty of other 90's cars besides it like the FC Rx7, A70 Supra, 300zx, and even a 89'-99' Celica or 90-00 Sentra SE-R lol The 240sx really is over hyped in every aspect

ILogic 1 because of the rarity and the fact you could put police lights on it, if you can’t buy it or win it in a wheel spin it’s going to cost a bit in the auction house
And in the vic’s case it was released early in the games life as a prize for winning in a live race with other people against highly skilled bots and it was hard to get so the asking price skyrocketed once the event ended, then it got released again, and practically everyone got it. Then tryed to sell it for a lot but since so many people had it the prices dropped like a rock
Yeah I looked for some cars I would like to own irl if I was a american teen and this thing was absurd! I ended up buying a Silvia by 3k and 2 R32 for 60k.
Another car that was hit by the TH-camr inflation was the NA and NB Miata. A few folks review or buy them, and talk about how cheap they are, then you start seeing a 1995 M Edition with 20k miles going for almost $20k, that would've been $8k a few years ago

However, I feel Alex from Car Throttle definitely pushed the prices up. His multiple videos on the NA and NB Miata's definitely made viewers learn enough about them to feel comfortable buying them. I remember when Rust was a big issue in the used Miata market, but for $3K, no one cared. Now I can't imagine paying more than $10K, only to still stomach a mediocre example.

Man at the beginning I wanted a ND and basically realised it would be way above my budget. Two weeks later I had the key of a 1.8 NBFL in my hands lol. Absolutely no regret

Even 940 turbos are hard to find and I liked them because they where better and cheaper than 240s
Another car I could add is the Toyota Corolla/Sprinter, they’re going for like $25k-$30k now for a good Levin or Trueno example, because “Initial D car.” Surprisingly, I can still find a good Corolla GT-S for under $5k.

I think the gtr r35 has probably inflated heaps
Nope. They're as low as $45K used (considering some were $100K+ new, that's a drop). Inflated by TH-camr's means cars we push via hype and have shot up in value over a short period of time. The GTR has just done what any other car does...depreciate steadily. It's price was completely unaffected, it just followed a normal pattern of a car's value. TH-camr's made the car, "overrated" and every 12 year old's wet dream. But you have to remember no 12 year old can actually buy, much less drive the GTR, therefore no amount of attention can raise it's value when the target audience isn't even in the market to buy one. Cars in this video were cars directed at an teenager/adult audience, thus when hype was generated via car reviewers, unlike 12 year old fanboys, us 16+ year olds DO have money to throw at these vehicles, and if we all do it at the same time...we accidentally skyrocket the prices!

I knew the crown Vic was gonna be on the list just from the title. I actually owned a 03 Vic as my first car and paid about 1300 for it. I just sold it last year for 3 grand.
I really wanted a crown Vic when I was 18. Just a thought of a $500 v8 sedan was the stuff of dreams. Seeing the prices now at the age of 21 it depresses me.
Look for a Mercury instead.

@@skuzzyj The Grand Marquis is a more luxurious version of the Crown Vic. It won't have the cop equipment on it, but it still uses the same body design and the same engines and mechanicals as the consumer-grade Crown Vics.

The Crown Vic inflation is kind of good and bad at the same time. The good is that people finally realized how much potential these cars have and the bad of course is the price going up. Last time i checked a fully restored p71(cop spec vic) was listed at $10k like WTF man??

If you have enough Mechanical Know how. You can get a Regular Crown Vic And Transplant The Magnum engine from the interceptor version I have not done enough research but alternative holds potential...

I remember when you could buy a running 240 for 300 bucks in any junk yard in north america. the car got popular for drift because it was trash and no one cared about hitting a wall in one. I think Volvo has started filling that gap a little.
BMW e36 are another option that's going up in price because of the drift tax

Honestly like 6 years ago, I was on autotrader looking for cars and I found a lot of crown vics for like 1-2k. I was gonna get one as my first car, but then when I was actually gonna get one, the trim and year I wanted was like 6k.

Look on FB Marketplace or Craigslist. You’ll find many examples for $5000 or less. In Austin, TX, most of the Crown Victorias are under $5000.
@@atx-cvpi_99 Yeah. You can find them for less but they're not really worth it anymore imo. Plus that 4.6L is kinda overrated. I know it's reliable but it isn't really that good in most other respects.
Look for a late model Grand Marquis or Town Car. Same thing, no TH-cam tax.
I've seen shitbox Vics for sale for more than I paid for my Mercury and the Mercury had 70k miles on the clock and came with a binder full of dealer invoices when I picked it up.

Another reason why the 240SX goes for so much was because of it's constant appearance in the Need for Speed games. Particularly both Underground games, Carbon, ProStreet, etc.
I remember wanting an s13 for my first car thinking it would be a reasonable price and then finding out drift tax was a thing

Bruh, No police force is able to buy CV New anymore, they stopped production in 2011. They were the ones liquidating them in the first place. AKA the COPS are the one SELLING. Not doing the buying. They already got their nice chargers, and soon we'll get our hands on all their nice chargers when the same process happens again when Police Stations start to auction off chargers.

Lol, when you were talking about the 240sx, I looked up at where you were and you were at my school.
The supercharged E55 has jumped up a lot. When I first started looking a couple years ago they were $7k -$10k, now they are $12k and up. Word got out that the engine itself can be very reliable.

I have a 928 GTS and a couple months ago, one of the 928s used for close ups on Tom Cruise in Risky Business sold at Barret's for 2 million. My car, over night gained 20k in value.

OH MY LORD, You're right about this one. Some of these mofo's really out here trying to sell a Terminator for like $30K. Like shoooooooooot, I can get a 2015 Mustang AND supercharge it to be much faster with that kind of money!!! It's all collector price too! Anyone trying to build a fast performer has too big of a brain to buy one for $30K since like I mentioned, you can boost a cheaper car and clap it. So the only people crazy enough to drop $25K+ on terminator's are...you guessed it. People who will barely drive them and just brag, "i hAvE tHe fIRsT iRs mUsTaNg. hErE, rEaD aBouT iT!"
I remember when they were still depreciating and some were like $16-$19K. Now see, at those prices, they're a solid car. Well worth the money for performance and all around. But once cars hit collector value...oh lord. It's impossible to get money's worth. As Casey Putsch put it, it's in the hands of snobs at that point.
Are you getting your “moneys worth” out of a 69 fastback? Are you really getting it out of any desirable car? You can make anything fast so by that logic you also way overpaid for your corvette. Hell, look at what you are paying for a clean fox body notch now. There are just not that many out there anymore just like there are very limited amounts of terminators. I’ve also never heard of a terminator owner brag about their irs, a lot of them actually swapped in a sra.
Yup I just went looking for one because I want to save only to see them at like 30k... I could have swore they were closer to 21-25k last summer.

Nice vid, straight to the point. While there are some cars out there that their value is rising. There are so many cars were there value drops like a stone. I drive a ‘09 Vw Jetta SE 2.5L w/ 121k miles, and if I were to sell now. I would get about 2500$. Anyway, great video!
Depending on where you are you can find a gallardo for 30k-50k. Mainly due to the fact that they might burst into flames at any minute

I agree with the crown vics. I had two..got the first which was a 2004 p71 for only 500 with 87k miles in 2015....only thing I did to it was put a sound system in it, tint and exhaust. Sounded great. Owned that car for two years, went on road trips constantly, car never gave me problems. Eventually sold it for 2500 in 2017 lol and the person crashed it a week later smh.....a few months later got tired of driving the Plymouth neon I had so I purchased a Second one I bought was a 08 base for 400 with 130k eventually the transmission went out and I traded it in for a 06 mustang gt. I loved those cars except the police attention they brought. Currently own a 94 caprice 9c1, 08 300c and the mustang gt...but when I drive the caprice I honestly miss my vics but the prices jumped up so much I doubt I’ll buy another.
There are crown vics for like 2k in my area, but in my area miatas are skyrocketing like the Supra

I am so sad about the Vic, it was a great car! My dad used to own a Town Car when I was younger (I know it’s not a Vic exactly but it’s almost the same car) it went over 250,000 miles with no problems.

I'm 17 and I have a 2011 crown Victoria and I could not be more happy. It makes great power and I have been slowly putting some performance mods on it here and there since it is my daily driver.
I just picked up a 2008 p71 crown vic with a push bar for $400. Needed a little bit of rust work (Normal for where I live) and it needed a transmission. Parts are EVERYWHERE for these, I'm currently in the works of fixing it to put it on the road, You can still get them cheap, they just need a little bit of love, and that's not a bad thing, it will help teens or people getting into cars to learn how to fix things.

I love my 03 GT. Too bad new edges are disappearing slowly. Great reliability and with simple bolt ons like exhaust, cai, and tune gets you over 300 hp easy. Super great aftermarket support and super simple to work on. They sound good as hecc, and fun to step on ;) be careful with the live axel tho

The RX8 values have increased from around 500-3000$ to over 8000 due to youtubers and I'm glad I own one. They're so fun!
And as working, well kept RX8s become more rare the value is expected to continue increasing as its gaining a lot of popularity amongst collectors and track enthusiasts.
It may have a bad reputation due to people mistreating it as if it were a traditional piston engine, but it is a very VERY fun car to drive and it handles like nothing else.
The car won a ton of awards, including best handling car for under 100k$
I fucked up selling my RX-8.
I was looking at the C5 Z06s in the weeks before Doug made his video, stopped looking afterwards because the secret was out and prices were bound to go up. Seriously, ~$17,000 for a reliable, 400 HP, good MPG car that really only had one downside for the price, the interior, but at $25k, the interior alone makes it not worth the price.

I bought a 89 240sx coupe, very clean, all stock, with under 100k miles for $2000 back about 2002. Sold it for $700 few years later because the automatic trans was acting up.
Since Doug reviewed one, the Oldsmobile custom Cruiser got a bit more expansive.

Here in Italy the price of the 90s Hondas blow up. You were able to get an integra with 7k € untill 2 years ago, now you need 16-20k €.

Yep... I have a Genesis currently and was looking to upgrade to a later model Equus for the V8 and the nice features. I got sad as soon as I saw Doug made a review on that car... It was very underrated and undervalued.

In Germany this happened to a lot of JDM Imports, like Skylines, Lancer Evos, Subaru WRX STI Models. 6 Years ago when I got my license, they were all affordable between 10 and 20k, now you can most likely only find crappy examples with high mileage or big problems
