I lived in a first tier Rochester suburb for 21 years and worked in the city just outside downtown (near Park Ave. neighborhood) and it was an awesome city in so MANY ways. The outer suburbs are amazing like Pittsford, Fairport, Webster, & Brighton. The taxes are outrageous. That's an issue if moving there for work. Culturally it's awesome with great things to do. The scenery is absolutely gorgeous. Wonderful small NE type villages and suburbs.
The taxes may be high, but the cost of housing is relatively low. Also, substantial property tax rebates are available for seniors through the STAR program.
I grew up in Rochester in the 70s & 80s, graduated Brighton HS. Moved away in the 90s, lived a few different places. I found i actually prefer the damper climate there, and as far as winter goes, yes, Rochester has winter, but it can handle winter. I've discovered that most places that get snow, only get a little and have woefully inadequate equipment to deal with ANY winter weather. Now I am near Portland, Oregon, and they do not know how to deal with snow here. Rochester can handle 3 feet of snow better than Portland can handle 3 inches! And to be honest, the distinct seasons in upstate new York are wonderful. I would like to move back. I hate Oregon. New York is WAY better!
You will find ROC to be a great place. Cold for too long, yes, but great springs, summers and falls. Close to lots of great places like Finger Lakes. Like all cities, just stay away from bad areas. Suburbs are great!
Our family moved to Rochester (Fairport) from Jacksonville Florida in 1989. Rochester definitely a great place to live And issues you're talking about are really with the City of Rochester and not the suburbs.
I own a 1900 sq/ft, 4 br, 2 bath home on just over a 1/4 acre currently worth about $245,000. Because I am a senior, my property taxes are about $1,600 combined. I live in a western suburb with very little crime. The schools are great and you can travel anywhere in the county in less than an hour. We are also close to both water and the mountains. Winters have become shorter and the Spring, Summer and Fall are great.
I love living in Rochester NY, just don't go in the crappy parts of the city and you'll be just fine, just like any other state.ive also lived in Florida for a while, been in Dallas Texas for a summer/Alabama/missipp/let's just cut it short and say all over the south. I'm more than happy to be back in Rochester, Although I'm in Penfield out of Rochester, Is where I'm going to stay.
First off Rochester is located in western NY, not upstate, which is a general term for anything outside of NYC. The mild winter weathers we had in 23-24 and a couple of winters before that were an anomaly as we usually get closer to 100 inches of snowfall with temperatures usually in the teens and twenties or colder during a typical winter.
I have a home in Geneva. I personally like the seasons of this part of New York, the cold does not bother me. I do despise the politics. But upstate is more moderate, which I approve of. Crime in Rochester is indeed a problem, but I have walked from Park Ave and East Ave throughout Downtown and back. I know it is not much, but I have never felt unsafe. Rochester is a beautiful city with excellent architecture that has unfortunately been ruined by a political party that has bred victimhood, poverty, and despair. Voting for a more moderate or conservative group of candidates would very likely help fix what the city suffers from.
I live in NC. My brother and I have very similar homes. He pays nearly triple in property taxes than I do. We left 28 years ago because of the taxes. I'm just an average working guy. I simply can't afford to live there. Good luck.
We are moving to Fairport in a few months. We just bought a house there. I agree with you about the weather. We are coming from the pacific NW and if it's going to be cold, I would prefer there would actually be some snow as it is pretty to look at. Snow makes it brighter too so it kind of combats the gloom too. Cold and gloomy can be kind of miserable. I am surprised at how little snow the region has gotten over the last few winters.
Welcome to the area! Yeah the only winters here aren’t really that enjoyable anymore. They are just gloomy and cold and no snow. I used to LOVE NY winters, but not anymore haha
I'm not sure what you mean when you say that homes are listed for the actual market price. In my opinion, based on looking for a home in multiple regions, Rochester homes are selling way above the listed price solely due to low supply. Isn't this how it tends to work - supply and demand. If suddenly the supply increased substantially, I doubt you'd see people paying $50 - $100k over asking - especially because the property taxes are so high there. I think the only reason people are still willing to go way above asking is because even if they offer say $150k over asking, they can still get a decent home for less than $250k. But then their property taxes will be based on what they ended up paying, correct? So they'll be even higher. You are spot on about the frustration for. buyers. I've been looking for over 3 years and have gotten out bid on my offers every single time - by people with way more cash I guess. It will be interesting to see what happens when interest rates go down. I suspect that if the supply doesn't increase, it will be more of them same and worse. Thanks for your video.
Random thought. I grew up a couple of hours away in Binghamton. We usually got our first snow around Thanksgiving. We always had white Christmases. That's shifted. Where are the buyers coming from, local or out of state? Must be hard for new home owners to get financing competing with cash buyers. People in California are selling for big cash and buying a cheap house, for them, cash with money left over. They will over pay for a house then remodel it, put 2 Teslas in the garage and retire in Rochester.
Yeah, honestly not many people retire in Rochester at all unless financially they have to. Most retirees move south where the govt doesn’t take all their money and have better weather. Most people coming here are relocating for work, typically higher paying jobs, but there are also a lot of folks who have their parents IRA cashed out and are buying cash.

Canada doesn’t necessarily border Rochester. It’s separated by a large portion of Lake Ontario - Buffalo is a direct border to Canada. Love candor of your videos. I am senior, retired. Interested in Rochester suburbs and Finger Lakes. Can bring $200-$250k cash to offer. Finance $200k. You talked last I saw about intentional underofferings. Do I have a chance?
Hi, just wondering if you ever got a response to your questions and if so, what did he say? I kinda have the same questions. Thanks.
You certainly have a chance with an offer like that! That sounds very strong and sellers love that type of offer in this market!
@Sirvivhor328 hey there!! Text me! 585-490-1900
Just be blunt . I lived here most of my life .Its a a sh*t h*le
Great video, thanks Bro!
No worries! If you’re coming to the area and need anything, don’t hesitate to reach out man!

Think about the time you spent putting this click bait together. Apparently you can't leave here, so embrace it - is the winter brutal or mild? Pick a lane. Also, you sound trite when comparing us to Hawaii. Final thought - your sales pitch as a realtor is to tell people how much it sucks to be you and sell Rochester? Maybe time for a different gig.
You sound like an awesome person. Think about all the time you spent on this comment bashing me, when really you’re helping me. The point of my channel isn’t to lie to people and say everything about the area is great, it’s not. I’m here to inform folks relocating here on what it’s actually like so when they get here it’s not a shock. And by the way, they call me because I’m providing value that no one else is giving. Lastly, I’m doing better than most, even with that “sales pitch”. Stop spending time at midnight shitting on people who are doing good.
@@Livingflxandrochesternyif you want to do something good, talk about whether the government is corrupt, if the police are corrupt, If people are being taxed out of their homes because the local teachers and police, that's what you should be talking about. Not some childish aging hipster talk about the weather. Gloomy weather is nice. It's hot weather in Texas that causes people to die and causes the murder rate to soar.
@@dampergoldenrod4156 watch more than one video and you’ll hear that I talk about that too. The government is corrupt everywhere not just Rochester. I talk about taxes being the major factor between home affordability and not affording a house. I mention all of it. I appreciate you watching and taking the time to comment, but maybe before making that comment you should spend more time than A VIDEO and see what else I talk about because if you did, you would’ve saved both of our times on a comment 🤷♂️
Rochester weather is the worst!
Great video. I agree with everything you said. Having built 7 new homes in in this area over the past 45 years, I can say that NONE of them were located within the City limits of Rochester. I never step foot in the City now. It's a good thing that there is really no reason to do so. Sitting back waiting for August 17th, to see the total nightmare take over the Real Estate world.
Thanks for the red state propaganda. You're perfect for the MAGA crowd.
lol your welcome. I’m an American patriot and Marine Corps veteran who won’t support communism. If you want communism, which if you’re voting blue that’s what you’re voting for, then just move to Venezuela or China, or North Korea. ✌️
@@screamingdizbuster7722 additionally, thanks for watching the video. I get paid whether you agree with my points or not.
@@LivingflxandrochesternyVenezuela voted mudora in office. it's the USA that is corrupting the election process in Venezuela and you deserve no thanks for murdering innocent people in Iraq. The enemy of freedom is inside the USA.. The USA is not a communist country . Communist countries build housing and roads and bridges for people. USA is like a third world African dictatorship from the 1950s
It's a problem in the Northeast. People are obsessed with politics. They talk about it in public. They don't have any class. They don't have anything to talk about other than what they saw on TV or the latest book promoted by some on-air goofus.. These are really nasty, toxic stupid people who imagine they have something good to bring to these communities
I live in Wayne County. Served a three - year term on the NYS Republican Nominating Committee. Outside of the metro areas like Rochester/NYC/etc. it's a mostly Republican state. If it wasn't for the metro areas, NYS would be a truly great place to live!
It's a list of spot on.
Everything is truthful you need some Laws changed & Rodchesters not the best place but whys Politics in any of this Crime isn't a Political thing or where your faith lays or Drugs Blue or Red doesn't matter by the way Canada is Bordering this City right?
Canada doesn’t necessarily border Rochester. It’s separated by a large portion of Lake Ontario - Buffalo is a direct border to Canada.
Politics is a very large portion of the crime and other issues here. The city is ran by democratic policies that enable criminals, rather than deter them. Our policies get them out of jail quickly, and act as a slap in the wrist rather than using it as an example of why not to offend. Look around the country, almost everywhere that is ran by democratic politicians are dangerous, and in poverty. It’s just the facts 🤷♂️
@@Livingflxandrochesterny But what difference does republican make though?
I mean, Nixon was a republican president and he was so bad that he got impeached.
And Trump is republican, and looked at what happened during his term. 😆 He was the worst Prez we every had. So, if all voting where to go republican what difference do you think it would make for Rochester or any other location in America?
Nothing but young criminals driving around in expensive cars all over the city in Rochester!

Hi, I’m actually in search of property to put up a tiny home or cabin in upstate. Looking for a township with lax ordinances and codes, can you advise?
You're not going to find it in New York state. All the government employees retired teachers retired police. They own all the cabins and vacation homes in upstate New York and they run it like the Israelis run Palestine
