The elderly lady across the street from me years ago made this soup and I was never one for beans in my soup but I'm telling you, it's the best soup I've ever eaten. I didn't know until now how she made that broth so flavorful...it's the 'HAM-HOCKS'! One variation she did with it was to make little, quarter sized, suet dumplings with it. Omg, so good. Thank you sir! ♥ Now I can finally make Isabel's wonderful soup myself. After I had moved across from Isobel, I began noticing that she walked, at least 3 residential blocks to the grocery store and back with her grocery bags under her arms. I would marvel at her determination to save money on cabs, she was on a fixed income of course. She could barely walk! So, I got to know her by asking if she'd like to ride with me whenever I go shopping, and long story short, we became very, close friends. I'd drive her to get her groceries and she'd cook me all these fantastic meals about once every week. She'd also make extra money on the side by catering every now and then but by then catering was becoming a bit too much. She'd still do it sometimes though. Her recipes were all great but her specialty was baking! She'd bake me wonderful cakes all the time. That was a great benefit for only giving her a lift to the store....but just having her as a friend was the greatest benefit of all. She lived and worked in that gorgeous, lakeside (great lake Huron, east coast) town all her life as a bank teller. I was shocked that no one in that town would pick her up when they saw her walking. She had a friend who'd pick her up sometimes but not very often and mostly for just going out somewhere. I don't live there anymore but we still talk on the phone quite a bit...and boy do I miss her! What a dear friend.
Hi again. Ok it’s done. I followed as much as I could. Didn’t have a shallot but did have a sweet onion. Didn’t have 2 ham hocks but did have one rather nice one from a specialty meat store. Probably the only thing I messed up a bit was that I thought I was grinding pepper and realized it was the salt grinder 😧but I caught it before I put too much in. May be a tad salty but I don’t think too much. Next, it’s pretty loose with liquid but again, not overly so. I did mash up some of the beans .I’m going to make a pot of rice and that will help absorb. My cornbread is still in the oven. I think,it was a success. Thank you again ❤
@Uprightfossil Great! You can also thicken the juice by mixing a cornstarch slurry. Mix 2 tablespoons of cornstarch with 1 Tablespoon of cool water. Mix until smooth. Bring your beans to a light boil then add the slurry. Stir until the liquid is thickened. Be careful not to burn the beans.
Thank you, Richard! My people come from southern (emphasis on the southern) Indiana. Here in southern California, not a soul has a pot of beans on the stove, and I sure miss that. Your recipe seems very close to what my granny made. So grateful that you posted this.

@lisamarica7112 No problem. As an alternative, put in the pot on the stove and cover with water. Boil 2-3 minutes, remove from heat, cover and soak one hour. Then rinse with cool water then proceed.
Richard, I cooked the beans using your recipe. My Mexican-American husband had never had beans made this way. When he took his first bite he said, "WOW!" I guess that says it all. Thanks so much for your video and for the recipe!
My mom made the best ham n beans soup I’ve ever ate. We always added like 1/4 cap of white vinegar to the bowl to help prevent gas. It works and brightens the flavors too.
I have ewen making Navy bean/hammock soup for 10 years, but today I learned something new from you Video, thanks! I think the butter idea is great, and we all know, food tastes better with butter!
My mouth is watering right now. I just put a pound of beans on the stove to soak. And took out a big ole pork shank to thaw. Can't wait till tomorrow. Thanks for the video.
Made my kids a mess of beans a couple days ago. I'm having a late night snack of left over beans. Idk why but I never eat mine the first day with them but after they've sat awhile something about them. Lordy mercy! Thanks for the video! Our families have a couple of the same secrets there. Love to see it. God bless.
Thank you so much for this recipe. I made it today and it turned out delicious. I used northern beans and soaked them overnight. Since it was a 32 ounce bag, it made a ton. I divided it in half and put half in freezer for another time. I also used leftover ham bone. Wow what a way to get every morsel of ham off the bone. I still needed to cook it for another 3/4 hour, but when I returned home, I took the meat off the bone and tried a cup of it. It was so delicious and I hadn’t even added the butter or the bacon fat to it, or mashed any of it. This recipe will get typed up and added to my recipe binder. Thank you again so much.
Can't wait to try this! I've never added bacon or the grease before, but I already know it's going to be good. Thanks for sharing your family's recipe with us.

Thanks so much for watching. I use bacon grease for so many things. Let me suggest a product that will keep from having to fry a lot of bacon. It’s called Baconup from Walmart or online.

My grandmother always broiled the ham hocks for 10 to 15 mins then added to the pot. The cast iron skillet then was placed on the stove top & the font was removed, with some of the bean broth, then added to the pot of beans.
After soaking and rinsing the beans, I sauté the bacon and vegetables in the pot before adding the beans and broth back to the pot. Gives the vegis a bit different flavour. My mother made this recipe with the bone out of a whole ham instead of the ham hocks. The bone was not picked absolutely clean. The little bits of ham were delicious.
Thank you ! Made tonight ….. delicious! I forgot celery tho….Imma gonna bake fresh sourdough bread to accompany it. I had to use smoked pork chops because my store was out of ham hocks! 😢… but even with the complications…. Turned out great!
Yes. I added the full recipe and directions to the description box directly below the video. Click the "show more" button and the info will drop down. It's not printable, but you can either write down the ingredients or take a pic of it on your phone and take that to the store for reference. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Please let me know how they come out if you make the recipe.
I picked up some game changing pointers from you! I take a few scoops out at the end like you did but I run that through the blender and put it back in and makes the whole batch a little creamier but not mushy.
I know, older video, but i saw family recipe, and had to watch. Almost exactly the same as mine buddy, except i use great northern beans, mo big difference. A very helpful tip an elderly lady gave me several years ago. On the amount of beans you cooked , appx. 1 lb. Or so, add 1 teaspoon of sugar. You will taste NO sweetness , but it causes a chemical reaction with the beans to get rid of gas, bloating, farting, etc...it really does work, i was skeptical. I used to eat a lot of soup beans, but had to cut back because of type 2 diabetes. Can you believe their on my food list that i can only eat occassionally, i thought they would be eat all you want with cornbread and raw onion. Some turnip/mustard greens. Unreal, i hate being diabetic, but thank the Lord i ain't type1, talk later my friend.
I add 2 large peeled Russett potatoes, cut into large chunks, after the soup has simmered about an hour. After they have cooked for an half hour or so they should be soft enough to remove and mash. Add the mashed potatoes to the soup to thicken it up along with a cut up ham steak (1-1 1/2 lbs).
Thanks Ray for watching and your question. Well, the method I used in the video was the way my dad and grandmother used to make navy beans, or any type beans for that matter. I soaked them overnight with salt. Some people long soak and some do the quick soak then some don't even soak at all. I've done it each way. Also, some people salt at the beginning while others don't until later. The argument is whether to add the salt during the soak or at the beginning of cooking or even later. Some believe that adding the salt during the soak or at the beginning of the cook makes the beans hard and adding it at the onset of the cook doesn't properly season the beans as most seasoning will just cook out as the beans are still too hard to absorb the seasoning. Since making the video I have adopted a method of seasoning beans that works well. The soaking of beans only softens them and reduces cook time. So I may or may not soak, but I now don't add any salt to the soaking water. After the beans start cooking and has come to a rapid boil I reduce the heat and let them simmer for 1 1/2-2 hours. Right after I start simmering I keep checking the beans for wrinkling or cracking. I have found that this is the perfect time to add all the seasonings as now the beans will properly absorb it. Again that for watching and your question.
Thanks Richard, followup question: do you at any point in the bean cooking add any amount of butter to the mix as it is cooking, i heard it really increases the flavor and texture of the bean soup gravy? just wondering
I love my beans but I don’t see difference much between northern and navy….. aren’t they the same? Awe who knows….. but I also grab those dry beans from discount stores and such…. Mixed beans cheap cause no one seems to want to cook a good meal these days…. All about MC Donald’s….😢
Smoked ham hocks are one the most undervalued items in the store. Onion, beans and hock broth? Hell yes.delicious!
I agree. Thanks so much for watching.

It's not printable, but you can either write down the ingredients or take a pic of it on your phone and take that to the store for reference. Thanks so much for watching and commenting. Please let me know how they come out if you make the recipe.
A good cook knows to always add butter when possible 😜😋
Lol. Two things that makes life beautiful....butter and bacon. Thanks so much for watching.
It look so good. I can smell those beans in my mine and I'm going to cook some.
Sounds good! Thanks so much.
Thank you for the recipe. I'm cooking my navy beans as we speak. Hope they turn out good and yummy like yours look. Thanks again!
Sounds great. Thanks for watching.
@@RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN Turned out great. The hubby loves your recipe. He was in love with the bacon. This recipe will go in the books. Thanks again!💞🙏💞
Great! Thanks for letting me know.
I picked up some game changing pointers from you! I take a few scoops out at the end like you did but I run that through the blender and put it back in and makes the whole batch a little creamier but not mushy.
Good to hear. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I surely will do the blender thing next time. Thanks for the tip!!!
Cook the beans longer to get the thick sauce. The recipe is delicious.
Thanks so much for watching.
I do add a heaping tsp of bacon grease to make it richer and a Tbsp of flour to thicken it a bit.
That’s works. Thanks so much for watching.
Looks good! I'm cooking that meal tomorrow! Thank you! Challenge!!!! Lol
Thanks Janice. appreciate you watching.
Good job
Thanks Gigi
It’s hard to find decent smoked hocks anymore. I switched to smoked pork neckbones.
Sounds good! Thanks for watching.
I've never heard of adding butter. But, adding the bacon grease makes some sense for the flavor.
Butter just adds some richness. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Steve.
@@RICHARDINTHEKITCHEN yw, my friend
I was raised on pinto beans and pig ankles. Delicious. I'm going to Kroger's tomorrow! I'm not joking.
Thanks for watching.
Sounds good. Thanks so much for watching.
What are tiy doing? Adding all of those veggies? Are you making veggie bean soup or Navy Bean soup?
Thanks for watching.
Love your recipe ,can this recipe be cut in half ,single guy ,I love the use of bacon grease ,also do you pick off some of the meat from the ham hocks
Yes. It can be split in half. I also cut off the fatty areas of the ham hocks after they are cooked. Thanks for watching.
You had me at bacon. :D
LOL. Thaks Audrey
how long did you let the beans sit in the salt b4 rinsing them.....................
Oh yeah. Have in the past when I think about it. lol
Are ya positive about salting the water ?
Great question. I have always salted the water when cooking beans and pasta. Thanks for watching.
I use Great Northern beans but they are so close that I use them interchangeably with navy beans. It just depends on what I have in the house. :-)
Me too sometimes. Thanks so much for watching.
I love my beans but I don’t see difference much between northern and navy….. aren’t they the same?
Awe who knows….. but I also grab those dry beans from discount stores and such…. Mixed beans cheap cause no one seems to want to cook a good meal these days…. All about MC Donald’s….😢
They are similar, but they differ slightly. Navy beans are more oval shape and smaller, but more plump. Yeah. No Mickey D’s for me. Lol
