watched this while practicing and i think this video has improved my technique considerably in just 10 minutes for real lol. the way you broke it down so simply and explained it is so concise, yet i feel like i got so much out of it. thanks for the upload and all the great music!
That's honestly one of the best explanations of most foot techniques I've seen. You're a good teacher and the visuals are right. I'm going to go play around with the swivel now, I can get it with my right but not the left. Cool for blasts so I can't complain.
Well that escalated quickly. Great demonstration of the double tap. I've never really had any interest in using it, but after seeing this I'll give it a shot.
"FLAM! .. rest... FLAM! .. rest" HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAAHAH Only a few will get that joke XD Thank you for this masterclass homie, been using your doubles for years 🤗
would love to see a direct drive version of the redline eliminator and one feature I really want on future pedals designed by you and pearl is the adjustable length of the drive shaft
One of my favorite drummers ever since Informis Infinitas Inhumanitas. You forgot to name the pedals. I am probably going to purchase them, my Eliminators are falling to pieces after 20 years. Demon Drive XR if anyone is wondering.
I have the outmost respect for you and other “metal-drummers” who use these kind of techniques. But as an old-school “rock/fusion-drummer” I have a very hard time doing faster footwork without more power. I rather struggle with not having the beater hit my foot on the rebound, example: th-cam.com/users/shortssN2dORgvR9A?si=rcAqj0Q9SKHO3pTd Well, that’s my 2 cents ✌🏻😂 Ps. Great choice of cymbals! 🤩
Master the initial exercise of dropping a double. Then master the singles to doubles. Then practice singles -> doubles -> rest (all on grid). Finally add the doubles back like singles 8 bar -> doubles 8 bar -> rest 4 bar -> doubles 8 bar.
Interesting, Travis Orbin does the opposite. He teaches to use the shin muscles only. Which I do. I can't even begin to figure out how to engage the calves to any degree in any of my strokes.
I hate to say it outright because his teaching method/ philosophy is one of the best....I am 65 and like to complain at least once a day and let the world know what irritates me. (Even though no one asks🤣) ......... These great drummers are capable of such speed that I could not obtain if I wanted to...I admire their work ethic to get there. My gripe...the sound/tone of the bass drums in "speed metal" is so unappealing to me. It sometimes feels that some music has turned into an athletic event.... I need tone and resonance. Vibrance with that orchestral auditorium concert hall breath and depth.... different strokes......I just prefer slower with a 26" or 28" felted without head vents.
Totally understandable, especially because that classic booming kick sound is generally better for most genres(and natural drums just sound better). However, when it comes to "extreme" metal, if you try to play a standard kick drum over a PA at 200bpm+ it just turns into booming thunder that makes every note indistinguishable and drowns out the rest of the mix. To cut through the mix at these speeds, you basically have to trigger the kick and give it loads of attack. It's so necessary that it's basically become the signature sound of extreme metal since the 90s. Some bands overdo it and it sounds bad, but when it's done correctly and you hear those machines gun kicks blasting through a club synced up with the guitarists right hand...well it's a very powerful sound and unique experience. Don't get old and too stuck in your ways, try going to a live death metal show and see what all these youngsters(more like middle aged these days) kids are on about.
@@acmesalute76well that's a stupid response. Anyway he's right, the goddamn typewriter sound is beyond cliche at this point. It's a drum, an acoustic instrument.
@@HabAnagarekGood luck differentiating any notes past a certain speed with a traditional bass drum sound. It would sound like a fart. That and playing techniques, such as doubles, or speeds above about 230bpm usually require a trigger to be used in order for the hits to be loud enough to hear.
This dude is an absolute master

Thanks John. Got out of bed once I saw this water-clean explanation and started practicing, too bad it was at 4am. Muchas gracias de nuevo.
Incredible! The explanation is freaking perfect. And it’s all about sound, love that. Just subscribed.
So humble (..!)

Still cant do any of it but its awesome watching John do his thing \m/ FLAM! rest...FLAM!! hahaha

Fuck yeah brother 🤘
FLAHM REZT!
HAIL SPACE!
Great reference for difference between the heel-toe and doubles I think. Easily mixed up by most of guys and clearly not the same thing. :)
Flam rest flam rest mentioned 😂😂😂🎉🎉
I do doubles like this. If you can't hear them clearly without triggers you are doing it wrong. John is correct. 🤘
What size shoes do you wear?

Dam, how many kits do you have man? Lol
Any tips on starting and stopping feet doubles during a song, like turning it on and off comfortably?

Which drum model is that?
Trigger on the kick ?

I cant be the only one who think John resembles Corey from Pawn Stars haha
crazy how that beater height is short with tight spring tension my shin would explode...
Whats the song in the intro?
Yeahhhhhh.... Heel toe is a little hard for a size 14 foot 😂
What was that intro? It sounded soo tensed up..
Remember when people cared about sound.
? those drums sound amazing, the fuck you mean?
64th notes weren't shown. wtf

Then just do all that and ignore everything else. You'd think if you have lived as long as you failed you'd have realized that by now.
Don't need technique when you got triggers. Seen your doubles raw off mic in person and it sounds poopy. CHEERS
🤡
Triggers amplify mistakes.
