Years ago a traditional Roman Catholic Church I go to told the parishioners to tie their brown scapulars (on both sides) so the cord would just go over the head because if you were ever in a car accident (or any other kind of accident) or fell in deep water your scapular wouldn’t easily come off. I stopped doing this rather recently but if my next brown scapular cord is rather long I’ll probably tie it so the scapular doesn’t accidentally come off (which it tends to do when I’m changing anyway). I wonder if that’s similar to what this video is about?

One of the reasons it is worn as it is, is so people, if they see it, may ask about it and the wearer has the chance to tell or talk about the scapular to the one who is asking. Tied up it does not look like a scapular any more...actually, it looks like something that might be pagan or the Occult or Voodoo. Folks, I think you should you should stay with the ago old tradition of how you wear the scapular.
When you wear the scapular regularly, untied, it tends to move a strings are quite long. I can imagine to tie it in certain situations Only, when a loosely( untied) scapular might hinder what you need to do. I wear the scapular open,both unfolded...as it is a strong visible sign of adherence and consecration to Our Mother, Mary.
The tying is to safeguard the image that is on the scapular. Since it is made of wool this also makes sure that you can wear it in water without the soggy fabric being damp. The scapular, like all of medieval clothing, was also worn with form and function in mind. Protection of the image along with keeping the wool from water are the main functions. This is a sacramental, not a "necklace", God forbid.
I tie my scapular so the image of our lady can be visible from my my chest or neck. This makes it also so it doesn’t fall as well. As mine is very loose and long. if i were to die tmr in accident it wouldn’t fly off and stay with me until im gone
I've never know this abuse of the Scapular before. It should be made of wool and flat. Why would one want to roll the Scapular up. That is so stupid. Please DONT do it.
From the last almost 10 videos that I have seen priests and lay people explain is that the wool is to remind us that we are the sheep of the good shepherd, Jesus. It is really so blessed to be able to wear a form of wool that discomforts us so we can always be reminded in flesh how this wool touching our skin is annoying. Yet how much discomfort we can only imagine what Jesus went through immediately after the Agony in the garden, the Scrugging at the pillar, the Crowning with thorns, the carrying of the Cross, and finally the Crucifixion. He suffered for us and died because he was the ultimate sacrificial lamb. I learned why it is made out of wool material and why it should not be cover in plastic even though I would think it protects ot from getting dirty with sweat and possibly fading. God bless you.

Looks like it would ruin the scapular. I like looking at the pictures from time to time. They bring me comfort.

I agree. I don't see tying it up as a negative, but it is always best to keep the traditional ways. In essence, better safe than sorry.
No it's not being tied up, it seems the camera stops when it unrolls itself after being pushed in through the loop.

my scapular is in a plastic cover. Should I tie it as shown or leave it as is?
Scapulars are "supposed" to be 100% wool. You can tie it or leave it, your preference.

It's optional, it's not obligatory. There is no theological reason to tie them like this. It's Preference.
