Nice Juan ✨ This is probably the only example of “slap chop” I’ve seen that actually looks good. Most of the other examples have too much of a chalky, dry brushed look.
Yes, that's why I opted for a zenithal plus pre-shade and light drybrush combo. It's the best of both worlds
You can also utilize a damp sponge (a la the Artis Opus method) to get a more polished/smooth result instead of chalky. A lot of people do the chalky because they have no patience.
Mate... when you did an Xpress wash to nail the shadows rather than priming dark and then dry/air brushing up... that was practically a forehead slapping moment! Thank you for that. If only I can overcome my own flare up of can't-be-arseditis I can indeed get cracking.
😂😂😂😂😂
It's a sad epidemic no one talks about
A forehead slap chopping moment. If you will.
no minis were harmed in the making of this video
Not a single one...
Well maybe a dwarf or two ...
I feel like we are gonna see a lot of those colors on the Polish TOW tournament scene and you just gave everyone a guide. Nice.
Happy to help!
Love this. Really getting the urge to get my Bretonnian box done. Was actually more helpful to see how you handled the shields than the more straight forwards archers!
Thanks
Lovely, lovely work!
Thanks
Been watching for many moons and love your videos. Thanks for all work as it has taught a lot and immensely improved my painting!!
Happy to help
VIEWS FOR THE VIEWS GOD
You are a great artisan sir !
Thanks!
reading my mind. im doing this with my tomb kings currently since I was too lazy to drybrush. love these vallejo express paints
OH YEAH
Incredible work
Thanks
Impeccable editing work there at the beginning and super interesting methodology here. Amazing end product!
Thanks!!
Love the intro! 🤣
Thanks
Excellent recipe for skin. Huge difference with the diluted brown undercoat.
Oh yeah, it helps A LOT
Lol I literally just got those Artify brushes and was feeling a bit cheap because I didn't spring for the big name brand dry brushes. But if it's good enough for Juan Hidalgo then it's good enough for me!
They are literally as good as the AO ones for a third of the RIDICULOUSLY overpriced cost.
Decided to paint 24 dwarfs recently and went for a mix of Speedpaints and layering things like heads and it is fast and looks good. Express type paints are perfect to speed things up.
100%
Cool as always. 👍
Thanks
Ok so you convinced me, the result is just great, I struggled with zenithal priming but I won't bother anymore, your method just gives the result I want. Thanks!
Happy to help!!
buen trabajo , gracias por resumen 👍
Un placer!
Sweet intro… and paint Job I really dig the simplicity of how you handled the helmet and blade
Thanks!!
Dear god. I thought you were going to do it. Haven't been that anxious since my last tour at Melevalon Creek.
LOL 😂
The peachy manoeuvre 😂love it. Great vid!
I've become a big fan of the Xpress paints, thanks to you! I had tried AP Speedpaints and, while they're not bad, the Xpress paints just go down smoother and dry more matte, which I like. The Artify brushes aren't bad, either! Had an issue with the largest brush, but an extra crimp fixed it.
Thanks
Nice work.
Thanks
Fun to see different techniques! myself spray everything in black, then I dry brush with white paint, then it becomes easier with shadows.
That's the classic but I've been experimenting with different techniques and find this one the best compromise for me
Gracias
Kings of w...slapchop 🤭, muy chulos esos bretonianonianonias 💪😁
Gracias
Guess how I'm going to paint my Bretonians this evening :D
Thanks for the tutorial, Juan!
Happy to help
1:02 is my new desktop background.
😂😂😂😂
The hardest part of painting these is waiting for GW to restock the army box and send them out to those who preordered.
I had mine from back in the day but I understand the frustration. I'm still waiting on some of the new resin scupts
thanks Juan : )
Thanks for watching!
Yesterday the radio played Linda Ronstadt ‘desperado’ and for the time since I’ve had the bloody song stuck in my head nonstop but with the lyrics: “Juan Hidalgo, why don’t you come to your senses”. Been singing it all day haha
LOL
I really like that bretonia models aren't as overdesigned. Simple shapes, easy to paint. I've been trying to paint my sororitas for ages (wanted to do slapchop, but tried more traditional mini painting as well) and i'm just struggling soo much.
That's what comes with almost year old designs, they were simpler times.
They look great! Any chance of seeing how you’d do knights in the same style?
I don't, I cut corners here so I can really take my time with the knights.
That being said, I plan to release a video on Patreon on how I paint my knights soon. It should be out before the end of the month.
Great way to paint these guys! Does anyone knows what are the citadel counterparts of those xpress colors that Juan used in the video?
Great vid :)
Thanks Heather 😘
Gracias 😘
If someone is interested whats the chant is, its called Cantus Firmus Monks from Lynn M Barter
You found it! Awesome
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Hehe, Cheers to Shazam, besides the actual reason for your video....as always, very nice video if I had the time to paint
Thanks Juan, as always you made me smile and taught me something at the same time!
Never used a lot feathering with contrast paints because they leave very strange marks when moved even after a few seconds... I will try xpress as soon I will finish pouring my contrast paint over the desk.😂 does the express medium work as a retarder when mixed with other brands? Thanks!
Happy to help!
Not sure if the Xpress does that sorry, but logic dictates that it would a bit.
Hi Juan,
I saw a nice Bretonnian knight, are you planning a painting guide for the horse + cloth on it one day (youtube or Patreon)? Would be amazing. Thx :)
Yes I will be recording a video on the horse plus carapace for my Patron exclusive videos. I will be out during March, not sure when but at some point during the month for sure
I'd love to use any of those wave 2 colors but good luck finding any in the US
Sadly that's true. They are working on it but it's not easy
Hi Juan, your recommendation for Xpress colours commando green and dwarf skin amazed me, they are great colours to work with in the dilutions you've provided.
I purchased Templar white and failed, it resulted in a "pastel" colour that do not goes well with medieval figures.
Any other colour from Xpress you would recommend for undershirts or similar clothing?
Thank you for the great video.
Landseer Grey is also amazing, maybe Mummy White
Best intro ever 🤣
Thanks 😘
That intro 😂😂 *chop chop*
😂😂
Do the express paints re-activate after dry? Thanks for the great content. A video displaying your approach to knights (and barding / heraldry) would be outstanding.
Keep up the good work!
They don't. I don't paint knights like this as I like to take my time with them.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures of course not the JuanImprovedSlapchop for men at arms or archers, but the JuanTakingHisTime kinghts approach. It was just an idea, your videos and jokes are welcome!
How did you paint the back of the shield. I am struggling myself a bit tbh. Its such a strange plain surafce without any hint what the material is.
You can see it in the video, it's literally there. Just black
Appreciate your dedication to find an actual SlapChop. I really doubt if that product was available at all outside North America 😂
Oh it wasn't easy to find and it was expensive for the piece of crap it is but such is my dedication to the craft
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures lmao did you at least try to use it to chop some veggies?
@CoconutCheez I wouldn't trust that piece of junk to anything. I'm afraid to even hold it in my hands, it feels like it's going to break just by looking at it.
this looks sweet going to experiment with this tech on some tyranids
Awesome!!
Nice
Thanks 😘
Those artify brushes are seriously good stuff.
Oh yeah!
Juan! Do you have an Amazon referral link for Canada? Haven't seen those drybrushes before, would like to use the link if you have one!
I don't have one but get them, they are amazing
I need one of those Slap Chop contraption
They are absolutely terrible for chopping food but they paint your minis very well
What is the type of nippers you use to cut the painted shields mate? Must be superb quality.. Risky move hahah, don't you have to vile the nubs or???
It looks like express medium you use is mat? I have Army Painter speedpaint medium and it's gloss AF. If I add 4/1 and over - I get fully gloss finish, it looks like glass.
Can you confirm?
Yes ,Vallejo Xpress dry EXTREMELY flat. That means that the medium itself is also ultra matte
Tomb kings next please
I don't have any sorry, they made us choose between the two factions and the choice was easy
OMG your videos are the best. I hate when people refer to painting as "slap chop" because it always reminds me of that kitchen gadget (plus it sounds really dumb).
Thanks!
I personally think it's a fun name for an old technique and because of the name more people have learnt a great painting tool.
Also I can make a joke about it
Great intro xD
Still my all time favourite
Slap Chop 😂😂😂😂 el verdadero "Mira mi huevo" 😂😂😂
😂😂
Love that crapchop! #2023
😂😂😂😂 it is indeed crap
Juan! Juan! He's our man! He makes me feel uncomfortable sometimes! 😅
Happy to help 😘
Would Wyldwood be the right substitute for Willow Bark? I can't get that locally. Great technique by the way! Slapchop with a sepia palette is far superior to the black & white you so often see.
Yes it would be a good substitute but you will have to thin it even more.
I totally agree, except for blues, it's by far the best undertone palette for Slapchop
Thanks @@JuanHidalgoMiniatures !
Why did i have to find this now 😭 all my minis are primed black now and i still have loads of black primer left
Use It like that, do a classic Slapchop it's going to look great
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures that's what I have been doing but imo this looks better imo. Guess when I eventually buy more minis I'll use this method of it instead lol.
Hi,whats the chant at the end
I don't know, it's from the TH-cam audio library.
@@JuanHidalgoMiniatures Ok,thx
What's the name of the box set? Pls help😢
These are just Bretonnian Men-at-arms
Thanks been trying to figure out the name of them Love your vids
La introducción es cinema verite😂😂😂😂
😂😂
Please do slap chop high elves
Maybe in the future
hello juan
😘
Love your videos man, always make me chuckle.
On a serious note, my boss doesnt believe Icantbearseditus is a real illness, can you send him an e-mail?
Yes I can. Always happy to help
(i don't know if i failed to comment or it somehow got deleted - but here goes again: the code in the description doesn't work on spanish amazon!)
That was my mistake, I forgot to remove it. It's just an old code that expired
0:19 LMBO
Happy to help
I am not sure the result would have been different white a white undercoat instead of a zenithal
It would have been, but nothing very dramatic. Still each little bit adds a bit of complexity and it's very simple to do with spray cans
You cut the " it worked" ending to the opening!
I did because I'm pure evil
nice music choice! seems like very few want to pick up on the fact that a lot of Bretonnians are supposed to be super religious and go on crusades every now and again against everything from orks to elves to the people of Araby.
Exactly! The fact that the regular infantry can get a monk as a character should be enough clue.
I wish I had the confidence to just not paint the back of the weapon and hidden places. I trully wish, but I like to take pictures of my minis and sometimes the camera just catches every single detail.
Slap chop actually help a lot with this problem though because natural shades build themselves in the darkest spots.
Nothing is stopping you from painting everything! More power to you, I actually recorded that bit so people understand that it's not bad to not paint those details if you don't want to.
: )
😘
What is this WITCHCRAFT!?
It's always great to get compliments from your favourite fried rice!!
You didn't finish bases so you don't have a finished regiment. Make bases and then you will feel even better
NEVEEEER!
😂
*Grisaille. That's what it's called.
Indeed that's the traditional name but I honestly don't think there's anything wrong in introducing some fun into old techniques
