  • Intro: 00:00
    Day 1 Start: 2:11
    Day 1 Camp: 3:57
    Day 2 start: 6:03
    Steelbender: 11:47
    Day 3 start: 14:49
    Day 3 Camp: 18:04
    Day 4 start: 21:30
    Rob and I are headed back to Utah this Thanksgiving (2022) for a two week excursion. Riding the Peaks and Plateaus route is one of our key objectives. Immediately upon arriving in Utah, we ended up changing our itinerary, it was uncharacteristically cold so we ended up doing a backpacking trip in the Needles first, hoping for some warmer weather later in the week.
    We had a lot of fun on this route. I really enjoyed the section through Lockhart Basin and I liked Steelbender (even though it was a lot of hike a bike).
    Bike Set up:
    Rob and I both rode hard tail mountain bikes with 120mm front suspension and 2.6 tires front and rear. In my opinion, this is the optimal bike for this route. Steelbender and Lockhart Basin have some chunky terrain and the bigger tires and front sus provide a more comfortable ride.
    Thanks for watching!
    If you want to get in touch, shoot me an email at pnwbikepacking@gmail.com

    Thanks to Neil Beltchenko for putting together a great route

    You guys missed a stunning section. From newspaper rock, continue on Hwy 211 a few more miles to an obscure County Road (CR 136). Turn left on CR 136, crossing expansive high desert until you reach Needles Overlook Rd. Turn left and head up to Wind Whistle CG. This is a fantastic little CG with incredible views. No running water, but a great campground to rest, or just have water stashed. Then continue on Needles Overlook Rd for a few miles, then turn on to Looking Glass Rd. which will take you by Hatch Rock where there’s a polygamist family, the Fosters, who have built gaudy homes into an enormous sandstone island jutting up out of the desert. This family was in a documentary series called ‘Three Wives.’ Once you’re passed the polygamist colony, you’ll be winding through some beautiful canyon country on Looking Glass Road. No camping at the arch but when we pulled up, it was dark and we ended up camping right below Looking Glass arch. I climbed up into the arch for sunrise the next morning. It was spectacular. Continue on Looking Glass Road from Looking Glass Arch for a few miles and you will hit Highway 191. Cross Hwy 191, to Old Highway Road heading towards Old La Sal. Stay on old highway road for a few miles before turning North on Black Ridge Rd. Take Black Ridge Road winding through some spectacular canyon country until you wind up at Highway 191. Cross Highway 191 into the behind the rocks area. Take behind the rocks road through some absolutely stunning country and finish with Pritchett Canyon. You will see several sandstone arches and beautiful sandstone rock formations along the way. Pritchett Canyon is near the big parking lot for Amasaback where you guys saw those base jumpers. Amasaback is the perfect starting point for Lockhart Basin. I would never have thought to do Steel Bender. That route should be taken off bikepacking.com and my route listed above should be on there. Actually, Stacy Bellestri, the queen of bikepacking, should get credit for the above listed route. I guess I better add this route. October is the best month for this adventure.

      Hey Radek! In most of my videos I’m riding a surly karate monkey with 140mm front suspension. Rob has a surly krampus and just got some 120mm front suspension. For the Western Wildlands Route I think a hard tail with 120mm front sus would be perfect! In my opinion it is the most versatile bikes. Slap some 2.6 inch tires on it, you can handle most anything!!! Hope this helps

      Hey Jonny! Stoked you found the channel! I don't have any videos of bike/gear breakdown, but lots of people have asked about that so I am thinking about making one. Generally though, I ride a hardtail MTB with between 120 - 140mm front suspension. I TRY to go light, but usually end up carrying 10 lbs of camera gear haha. I pretty much always carry a backpack as it is my preferred method for carrying a camera. Let me know if there is anything specific you'd want to see in a bike / gear breakdown video.

    Chris what was your total load out with the backpack in lbs? You gonna keep rollin the backpack or move the weight to the bike?

    • @pnwbikepacking
      @pnwbikepacking  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! Hmm if I had to guess, the backpack probably weighed about 12 lbs. That includes the backpack, 1 sleeping bag, camera gear, and extra clothes. I took a giant backpack because our original plans involved packrafting... so I needed room for the packraft, PFD, paddles, etc... I plan to keep rolling with a backpack because its my favorite way to carry my camera. (Using a clip mechanism).

    Serious question: how do you keep the twig and berries warm while riding at those temps? My least favorite all time bikepacking experience involved some, umm, numbness down there during a cold weather trip. That is a feeling I never wish to experience again :|

    • @RobParker8
      @RobParker8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha! That’s a legit question. I ride with a pair of cycling shorts, a pair of Icebreaker merino wool tights and a pair of Kuhl hiking pants over the top. Once it warms up I take the tights off. It’s usually my feet that are frozen most of the time not my important parts.
