This recipe reminds me of going to my grandma’s house as a kid. There was always a pot of this simmering away on her stovetop and a bowl of fresh tortillas with a dish towel over it. I would just grab a bowl and sit down to this wonderful comfort food.
I know ground beef is more traditional with picadillo, but my mother-in-law makes hers with flank steak, and it's FANTASTIC. Like a combination of Cuban ropa vieja and picadillo.
Diced Mexican zucchini and carrot is a great addition! Picadillo is so universal. Great on its own with rice and beans, on tostadas, in crunchy tacos, flautas, enchiladas, burritos. The possibilities are endless.
Installing equipment at Moma’s kitchen in San Diego this week and found out about all the good work Sam does for this organization is amazing. Took a lunch break at Not Not Tacos and it was fantastic. Best tots ever.
I am Mexican-American and this makes me so happy Sam how you are so passionate about making Mexican food❤ I still remember when I was younger we didn’t have a TV when I was younger. I will go visit my mom’s friend. Sit out at her living room and watch your cooking shows now that I’m older and I do have a TV and I have TH-cam.😅 love watching your videos
Watching from OKC. I work with an engineer that moved here a few years ago from San Diego. We talk about food at least 3 times per week. It blows his mind whenever I bring up STCG food, because he remembers watching you on the local channels, and also your grocery store appearances. Pretty cool stories.
It’s me again Sam. I can’t wait until the fall but we definitely need a casserole series. I want to see what innovative ideas you can come up with Thank you in advance
My friend from California taught me this recipe years ago, back in the 80s. She made it a bit different - she used tomato sauce and a lot of chili powder, but it's just so delicious. GREAT with scrambled eggs for breakfast.
To Sam the cooking guy and the crew! I’ve been subscribed from the beginning, first time asking for a request. Could you come up with an episode with salad dressings, thank you for all the entertainment you guys have given.
This Picadillo con Papas was amazing! I love how you brought out the authentic Mexican flavors in such a practical way. It's already become one of my favorite recipes too! 🔥🌮 Thanks for sharing, Sam! 👏😋
That is smokin' good. And the nice thing is that it can be made in advance and then heated up or make it for the first day and then have it some more on subsequent days.
I make this all the time for my wife who hails from Mexico. So simple, super cheap, and so damn good! I brown the potatoes on the flat top. Gives it that little extra color and adds a nice flavor too.
Hey Sam, thank you for making these videos and breaking things down the way you do. I love making your recipes for my friends and family! I consider myself at a beginner level but am always looking to push the envelope! I want to thank you and your team for all of your hard work! Keep doing a great job! Oh, and I'm looking into getting some of your gear!
This looks so good, Sam. Reminds me of the first time i made this--back in 1984--a friend and i went to a local mexican rest (still operating today) and i ordered the picadillo. We liked it so much we went back to my house and decided to make it. Went to the store and bought what we believed was in it and at 10;00 p.m. we began, along with homemade tortillas. By the time everything was cooked it was 1;30 a.m. and we were eating picadillo with homemade tortillas. No, we hadn't been drinking, just two friends who liked to cook. Cooking with her has always been one of my favorite memories. AND IT WAS DELICIOUS!!! it looked a lot like yours. Thanks for the memories!!
Sam. Your videos are always very informative, funny, and Real!! My girlfriend (who's from Mexico) and I watched this video and she was excited to see it made this way, usually a soup for her. She asked me to put a request in for you to give Chiles Rellenos a try.
This was sooo good! I made it over the weekend but doubled the recipe and used my 7.5q dutch oven. WOW! Fresh ground cumin, added a couple cans of diced chilis too. Good stuff, thanks for this one!
Man, it's been a while since I ate Picadillo. My grandma used to make it every so often back in Mexico. Thanks for the recipe and the shot of nostalgia!
My mom always put black olives. Sometimes green beans or squash from the garden to be healthy and b/c we had to many. Definitely a good dish to start with, she taught me to make thia as a kid. Try california or new mexico chile powder instead of paprika.
That looked great. I like the traditional Cuban Picadillo. I was raised in South Florida and I make Picadillo a couple times a year. Enjoy if with black beans and rice. I enjoy all your videos.
I’ve just made this… I have pictures. An ABSOLUTELY wonderful dish to make. I bought my tortillas…due to time restrictions. Wonderful as a stew topped with cheese. Taco Picadillo is the best. Picadillo as a leftover, next to fried eggs for breakfast! Mind blowing great.
Great Mexican dish for us here in Florida who miss great Mexican food from CA! We're going to make this right away! Corn tortillas tho! More Mexican dishes please!
Such a simple dish yet so delicious 😋. This is definitely one of my favorite dishes my mom used to make and im glad to see it here on your channel. I will try your version next time I make it. Thank again for the great videos!
Made a double batch of Picadillo con Papas for a party this weekend. Added some sofrito with the spices to the ground beef and added some pasilla/poblano paste when the tomatoes went in and used diced tomatoes with green chiles. The Picadillo before the potatoes remedied me of a place in San Diego that used to serve eggs over Picadillo and fried corn tortillas. This is probably now going to replace chili in the regular rotation… So good!
OMG! I am pretty sure I asked you to make Picadillo a couple years ago! I grew up with a Cuban uncle and his parents taught my mom how to make Picadillo, Ropa Vieja, arroz con pollo, etc! I can’t wait to try your recipe! My wife and I make Picadillo all the time based on my moms recipe!
This is a close approximation of what my mom would make many times for me and my siblings growing up. Hers was more soupy rather than a filling for a taco. I think she used some kind of Knorr brand seasoning packet or cube to season it with and not much else. It was never really my favorite. However, now my mom has cancer and I live on the other side of the world in Korea. Anything that reminds me of her is precious. You are precious for sharing. Thank you.
My hubby is Mexican & Japanese so we put our Picadillo over white rice!😋 Yummy! We sometimes add a drained can of Veg-all for more substance in the Picadillo
I haven't had this in such a long time. It was one of my favorite dishes to eat as a kid. My mom would make at least once a week especially during the summer because it was fast and easy. And she would have fresh flour tortillas with every meal. ❤
my fresh flour tortillas always shrink up and go thick as well. Oil in the flour is supposed to stop the gluten from forming and shrinking up. Looks delish!
After watching this video the other day, I knew I had to make this tonight. This is delicious! It's like a Mexican Shakshuka with potatoes. I might try it on a tortilla with a fried egg for breakfast.
Dear Chef Sam, 1, Thank You for a complete written recipe They look good. 2, I don't know if you have ever made egg rolls that my request. again thank you STCG for being there for us.

We have a bounty of fresh tomatoes from the garden here in Michigan. I'm going to use them tomorrow in this dish. My neighbor grows peppers so I guess I'll snag a few from him. I can't wait!
