  • In this video I show you step by step directions on how to install a thumb throttle to your Jetson Bolt Pro. I have received several requests for this video and there has been some unfortunate accidents because folks accidently twisted the current twist throttle on this bike. This modification will add safety to this bike.

      My throttle broke, the casing crumbled around the bolt that holds it in place. Since there is lots of cable I am going to use the part that held the handlebar on the throttle, and my dremel, to put the cruise on the left where the start button is now. Start can move over by the gooseneck, out of the way. And now I dont risk broken fingers or carpel tunnel.

      Update, FWIW: I was unable to salvage the OEM display. I might have been able to, but that would have required a longer set of handlebars.
      On the bright side, I was able to splice it together right below the bars, and leave those wires available for future use.
      I had to replace the grips themselves, but they matched the novelty mirrors I bought so all in all, it was the fashionable choice.

    Thank you so much for your video on this! My son's Jetson had the throttle go out on him. Throttle handle just spun around. Saw your video on installing a thumb drive, ordered the part, and some wire connectors, followed your wiring diagram, and though the colors weren't an exact match on my harness, I still followed your diagram, and it worked!! Works perfect. Thank you so much!

    I just bought a Jetson and subsequently found your channel. You're doing a great job providing useful tips and info. Thank you. I want to mention that my bike came with the folding latch so tight that it was extremely difficult to unlatch. After some tinkering, I figured out that the latch can be adjusted by rotating the bar in the latch.

      Hello, thank you very much for your kind words and thanks for sharing that tip. Many people go trough a tight latch issue, I will recommend that tip for them.

    I watched your videos on taking out the battery, replacing the rear disk brake pads and rotor, and a few other videos. These are excellent teaching vids for people like me, who would otherwise be clueless about fixing problems with the Jetson Bolt. I had a lot of fun replacing brake pads and rear rotor, even though it was (for me) a complicated job. Jetson does nothing to support this bike - I cannot even get a new rear fender! - so your work in this regard is very much appreciated. Thank you!
    (By the way, I purchased a set of brake pads from Amazon that turned out to be a fraction of a millemeter too big, and would not fit in the brake pad housing. My solution was to buy a Shimano disk brake caliper, which included the pads. It would make it easier, and ultimatley cheaper, for me to get replacement pads in the future.)

    Didn’t originally want to do this mod, but on my way to my last final before graduating my throttle snapped. Thanks for the video, seems pretty straightforward. The OE throttle didn’t last all that long so I’m not convinced spending another $50-60 on a throttle that’s liable to snap in the same manner.
    Thanks for the videos on this bike, they’re about the only thing letting me maintain it myself on a tight commute budget after we had to scrap one of our cars due to insane back-to-back maintenance costs.

  • @ronbush9780

    Best bike video ever Shiva. My throttle broke during long bouncy ride in my boat. Bought a three wire thumb throttle on Amazon and hooked it up to the red black and blue and now works like a champ. Other wires on my harness were different colors but didn’t matter as I did not have to hook up the battery voltage wires. By the way, I hooked the thumb throttle to the right of the break leaver and cruise control. I did this by. Cutting off the grip, shortening it by the width of the throttle then putting in back with double stick tape like you use for attaching golf grips. Now have the best of both worlds. A thumb throttle and a grip that doesn’t rotate. Will not accidentally power this bike with the standard grip throttle which has caused me to flip a bike in the garage a while back. Thanks man. It is a wonder that you could figure out which wires to tap into. I’m a fan. Ron

    Thank you Shiva. I bought the thumb throttle and finished installing it after several days. My Jetson Pro is the older one and the color scheme of the wires did not match yours. So I tried many ways to match it up. After hours and hours of trial an error, I finally got it to work properly. A couple of notes for novices like me. The brake cable is easy to take off, but I found it really hard to get it back on to the brake lever. Also, snaking the wire through the frame was a bit tricky, but doable. Last but not least, do not make the same mistake I did by cutting the wires for the 6 pin throttle connector too close to the connector. You will have a real hard time splicing the wires together. BTW I also used your tire replacement video to help me replace my rear tire. Thanks again.

    What are your thoughts on the stability of the handlebar/steering given small wheel? I am going to do your thumb throttle install next week and that might be a good time to address the handlebar. I saw a vid where somebody replaced the stock bar with one that was a bit longer. Would that help with stability/steering given small wheels? I saw another video where a guy actually loosened the stem (at the point it folds) and then turned the stem completely around the other way to have the grips closer to the rider (not on the Bolt Pro, but similar e-bike with folding stem). So I think I can rotate the Bolt stem. Of course in the rotating the stem approach need to re-orient the brakes.

    Brilliant tutorial buddy. I personally find this more dangerous. I used to have it on my scooter and it was much easier to fire that lever when you didn't want to! I got into serous trouble. I'll always stick to twist and go, for that reason. Each to their own right.

    • @charliemik7284
      @charliemik7284 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are right about to each their own. One friend, my wife, and I all switched our ebikes from twist to thumb throttles for the same reason. It seems we all like to twist the throttle when mounting and dismounting which dangerously sends the bike shooting off uncontrolled. Each of us sustained minor injuries at least once before making the decision to switch to the thumb throttles.

    • @dubmob151
      @dubmob151 ปีที่แล้ว

      coming from a motorcycling background, throttle grips are better because they allow you to properly grip the handlebars. Opposable thumbs make that possible, but if you need the thumb to operate the throttle, you're basically just holding on with your palm and a few fingers.
      It's fine for smooth roads and slow speeds, but sometimes a more secure grip is warranted.
      That said, it was evident who was a novice to throttle grips at a Can Am demo ride, because they would turn the throttle grip and once it started accelerating, they just grabbed it harder to try hanging on as the bike left them behind, accelerating even harder in the process in a vicious cycle 😂.
      Experienced bikers will put a finger on the brake lever as a reference point for the throttle grip angle.

    I want to install a thumb throttle with a key lock one. Could you please advise which one in Amazon Canada is compatible to Jetson Bolt Pro? Please also tell me how to match colour wires of the keyed throttle wires with the Jetson Bolt Pro wires. Thank you so much!

    Mr. Sapkota iam a huge fan and a subscriber. I can't begin to even explain how helpful your videos are...Gratitude. I have one quick and pertinent question. If one were to upgrade to both above mentioned thumb throttle & the controller upgrade mentioned in a previous video at the same time, knowing what you know, is there one that you would install before the other? 🙏

    • @ShivaSapkota
      @ShivaSapkota  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you very much for all the support, I really appreciate your kind words. I would do them at the same time and instead of connecting to the original throttle, I would connect the new controller to the thumb throttle. Sometime people accidently burn their original throttle, so at least installing the thumb throttle would insure that your original stock throttle works in case you need to revert the modification. Hope this helps. Thank you.

    Hi. I have this bike which was originaly the pegged version but i have added a crank kit ot it. Also added front brake. Bu tnow it won't start. I did originally cut in the replacement brake levers but have since reverted to original, now it won't start. Do I need to have the brake lever switches connected? What else could I look at as the cause of the problem. I tested after removing the rear wheel to ad the sprocket and all was well at that point. Is there any tests I can make on the output motor wires to see if there is power there? Kevin

    Great video even though I'm not really interested in modifying my Jetson bolt its cool that you made a video to give us the options. if I could change one thing it would be to make the front heavier. lol the bolt can't handle loose gravel or pine straw I nearly crashed 3 times :D

    I want to add a key switch on my bolt pro. I plan to open one of the leads going to the existing on/off switch and insert my key switch between the removed lead and the switch. My question is ,which cable or conductor, coming from the controller, do I cut into. I’ve tried to get a wiring diagram on the bolt pro but with no success. Also , it seems that most controllers are pretty generic in there wiring setup. Any help would be appreciated.

    Having just watched, I wonder if releasing the handlebar clamp and sliding the handlebar all the way to one side would give you enough wire length to not have to create slack in the existing handlebar wiring...

    • @ShivaSapkota
      @ShivaSapkota  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I tried that on mine and I still needed more slack, the handlebar is quite long. But, each bike might have different wire slack, so might work for some folks. Thanks for watching my video.

    i definitely need to do this because my daughter was falling and was still holding the throttle, fell and broke her jaw and she's 30; it'll be advantageous for all of us: myself, daughter and grandson!

I plugged finished permanently hooking up the wires and when I plugged in the battery to test it made a click sound and it turns out I had left the unit on. Now it doesn't want to work. I'm 💯 I hooked up the wires correctly. Any ideas what could be wrong? Did I torch the controller when I unplugged the battery while it was on them plugged it back in later?

    Hi Shiva, great video! If I want to disable the throttle, which wire should i disconnect at 14:45 in the video? I want to put a toggle switch inline so that I can easily disable the throttle. Would you recommend the switch go on Power, Signal, or Ground?

    • @ShivaSapkota
      @ShivaSapkota  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would recommend you put the toggle switch on your signal wire (blue). That way, you don't have to worry about power and ground. You can use a very simple one wire toggle switch for that. Thanks for watching my video. Let me know if you run into any issues or have questions about your upgrade.
