      Can this power upgrade be done with a step up boost converter using the original 36v battery and boosting the voltage to 48v? The booster sitting on top of the controller. A less expensive speed hack would be great. Thanks for all your ebike videos!

  • @flitsies
    @flitsies 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Using thinner cables, don't do it, you will increase the fire risk.
    If you want more range add an extra battery to the back of the bike in parallel with the other battery, if you choose a 48 volt then add in a 48volt but be aware of the issues I have highlighted for safety.
    When these things catch fire they burn very fast so any upgrades you do you need to be aware of the fire risks, especially while charging.
    Always solder joins never leave them as press fit, unless they are meant to be press fit connector to connector, wire to connector should for safety be soldered.
    If you want more range just fit a rack on the back and add in a bicycle battery pack in parallel that has the holder, you can lock that into place with no vibration, and you can charge both batteries off the same socket.
    But I say again your 48v hack could pose a fire risk as it is.

    • @BirdBoss
      @BirdBoss 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m interested in upgrading the internal battery for more range, already speed hacked and am fine with the current speed; but don’t want to create something that could potentially be a fire hazard, tips?

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BirdBoss Well with my Kugoo which is exactly the same as the bike you have but under a different name I use two batteries in parallel.
      You need cable and connectors of the same type as on the original battery.
      A rack for the back of the bike the type that connects to the seat post.
      Solder all joints to bare wires, never just crimp them, over time wires crimped lose connectivity due to oxidisation, which in turn could cause issues with charging and potentially a fire.
      Always from time to time check the connectors to ensure they provide good contact.
      In the video the side plate was removed from the controller, as I said that is not a good idea, you could have bent over the tab or cut the tab off, but removing the side plate not good.
      The body of the controller acts as a heat sink, the heat sink body is held on to the insulated mosfets by a metal spring, the vibrations may put strain on that spring causing it to jump out of place which could cause a short circuit if the spring vibrates off and crosses the mosfets thus burning out the controller or causing a fire.
      So for safety replace the end bracket but either cut or bend the tab over that is getting in the way.
      check out this guy he has done lots of mods.
      Check out the rack type on the back.

      sorry, you don’t quite understand. the charging cables have always been thinner than main cable. they carry only 2 amp load vs 15 amp to 30 amp load of the main. think of it this way. you need to charge your phone, do you buy an extension cord and small charging cable or simply longer charging cable?
      the Jetson bolt Pro uses 20awg charging cable, I kept my wires 18awg, you can see in the parts list.

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@YouTruther I get ya, so basically you are going to set your charging cables back to the original size rather than charging through the main connector wires.
      But doesn't the new battery have a charging connector which runs from the BMS?
      My one does have a charge socket that runs from the bms.
      Both my batteries charge off the same circuit with separate BMSs so each pack is controlled by each BMS but will charge off one circuit.
      I can connect in two chargers for a faster charge.

At 7 miles on my odometer, it just quit running, fully depleted, I was scared I had damaged something, but plugged my 36 volt battery and it started back up. Is this common?

      36v -> 48v, the battery is capable of pumping out a lot more juice. My theory is that the controller is similar of the same controller used on MANY ebike models, capable of dual voltage support. Speed hack will get you +2mph, my guess on the 48v test is another +2-4, I've only bench tested before creating the video, using another modded bike. The bike in the video is not mine and I am looking at options of bigger 48v batteries for my personal bike that is still under warranty and will wait a bit. These projects are natural progressions, once I find better options, I will show it on a video, and the back end work involved with research and contacting vendors, is not shown on video.

    • @YouTruther
      @YouTruther  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      60v 30ah is massive (9x larger than the conventional Jetson battery), probably weighs more than the ebike, that's a small dirt bike level battery. The motor and controller will only push out so much, so you'll have to upgrade to match. The simplicity of the 48v is to keep it simple without having to replace the controller, and the motor can handle it just fine.

    First off do not leave those wires press fit in the new connector, solder them into the connector for safety, the reason being it could potentially cause a fire.

But for extra precaution & safety, i would also reccomend a small amount of solder on each, because wires DO pull out of connectors.... If it can happen on dealership-built cars & trucks which go through an extensive QA... it can happen to your crimping job as well.

      you can flip the bracket and screw it back on or bend it out the way. I didn't really care, since the cover of the Jetson has a groove for weather sealing, and it's pointed downwards, which has gravity working in its favor.

    • @YouTruther
      @YouTruther  ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry, the controller is a lost cause on the haze outside of replacing the controller, it's fairly updated, everything is built in, no override ability (some bikes have a short wire override), and it's built to be reliable IMO. It does pack a punch for sure, much stronger than the bolt, but it is annoying that it cant be tricked. Outside of that, you can probably trick it with a 52 or 60v battery, but that is costly and complex. The other option is to swap the controller from a similar 48v ebike with similar layout, would have to rewire of if you can find an exact plug and play, would be better.

    No offence but on other TH-cam videos I’ve seen, isn’t it true that a 48 V battery can cause serious damage do your 36 V controller which is what is in the Jetson when you get it!? It is my understanding that the battery voltage must always match the voltage of the controller otherwise you could fry something? Isn’t this true? It’ll overheat something and burn something out quite possibly! Isn’t that true? I’ve seen this on several videos that the voltage must match it must be there either of 36 V battery and 36v controller or a 48 V battery and 48 V Controller! Makes sense to me! I think what you’re doing is going to fry something eventually!

    • @YouTruther

      dual voltage controllers are the norm, look into what jetson sells, along with DYU and ancheer, you'll see a 48v version, and it's my theory, that they use the same controller internals (not necessarily model numbers). Refer to what I talk about in this video: th-cam.com/video/An3M_bW7nV0/w-d-xo.html

But after being home for a while I checked, turned on the bike and everything is normal. So must have been the controller.
