    Fun fact. The smoker tease wasn't originally planned. A writer pitched it and then the writer's strike happened and he had no idea if they used it or not. Getting to see it first along with everyone else watching the series. If I had to sum up what made me love this series, it was its sincerity. It was not afraid to wear its heart on its sleeve, it did not try to undercut the heartfelt moments with cynicism to make it "more real", it did not try crack jokes at its own expense out of insecurity. It just was unabashedly itself. This and Arcane are easily some of my favorite recent shows and its for the same reason, they are wildly different in tone yet they are unafraid to tell the story they want to tell.

    I think the biggest strength of this adaptation is that Oda had creative oversight. Not a single change went through without his approval, and he made some scenes be shot again or said no to aspects (like a romance between Zoro and Nami) that don't match his vision for the series. This isn't a soulless Hollywood adaptation - this is an Oda adaptation, starring cast and crew who love the series.
    For people asking, Steven Maeda talked in an interview that you can find at th-cam.com/video/_0WkkX1_Wm0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ljmT4elCQ570W606 about how involved Oda was.

    • @liamodynsky4871
      @liamodynsky4871 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      It is proof that you can change plenty about an original story for an adaptation, so long as the changes serve a purpose and the heart of the story and characters is still there.

    • @troikas3353
      @troikas3353 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

      Eh. Percy Jackson's adaptation has similar oversight by the original author and it has all kinds of issues. Despite how constantly repeated this sentiment is, no whether the original creator is involved or not is not the magic bullet for a good show. For every time it works out there are times where the original creator is an active detriment. Like Gene Roddenberry created a popculture touch stone with Star Trek that has spanned well over half a century, but The Next Generation didn't become the classic its remembered as until he was kicked up stairs and out of the way of the people writing that show. The arguably best Star Trek film was made by someone that had no knowledge whatsoever of the franchise when he took the job and took it on himself to dive into the source material with his own research.
      There just is no one single answer for what makes a good film or show adaptation of something beyond the person involved having respect for the material (which does not mean making zero changes, as films like Blade Runner or The Thing demonstrate) and having the right people assembled with the talent to pull it off.

      Yeah. If you have to change the plot to fit into 8 episodes, that's fine. You just can't change the characters. One Piece did it perfectly. There were parts where I preferred the anime or manga, but the whole way through it had the heart and soul of One Piece. That's all I could ask for.

  • @Patlichan
    @Patlichan 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Many people think that acting is about pretending, but it's not. Pretending is when you become a tree or a mouse as a kid while playing games. Meanwhile an actor forgets who he is, his actual self dies, and he is then inhabited by the soul of the character he is playing. He IS that character, for as long as he is on the stage.
    And the cast for One Piece nailed that.

    Love this duo. Nerdy posits "I don't know if they could have done a better job than this", and where I, as a huge One Piece fan *could* make some highly subjective criticisms, I simply conclude that this production went way above my expectations in the first place.
    Then Clarooooo comes off the top rope with the astute observation that this is unapologetically One Piece, without even experiencing any other medium of One Piece. This show was obviously created by people who know and love the intellectual property. Well... That, and Oda himself was given a say in his own story. That is a LOT more than *some* other adaptions around, today.
    Anyway, great stuff. As soon as I stop being lazy, I'm going to get the Patreon, and watch the whole thing again. Nerdy's OP reactions are my current favorites in currently in the 1st half (QueenBlaze is killing it, too!). I think it was really smart for season 1 to end with Arlong Park. That arc is pretty much the narrative climax of the saga, where (almost) all of the loose plot strands of East Blue get tied up and resolved. It also means that the season ends at the emotional peak of this section of the story, which is satisfying and leaves a good impression of the show in the audience's minds.
    This also means that we'll be starting off season two from a REALLY great jumping off point. The next arc will give lots of opportunity not only to touch back on the core story of the series but also serve to re-establish what is baseline "normal" for this world before going into the insanity of the Grand Line. It also means that two characters that will be very important will be introduced in episode 1 of that season instead of the final episode of last season, which narratively works extremely well.

  • @Arkayjiya
    @Arkayjiya 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    "So a sharp bullet would hurt him" Yes. The reason bullets don't do anything to Luffy is that the world of One piece has older guns with round bullets.
    I don't think the decision to end it here was a writing decision. I think it was a covid decision. The series was supposed to have two more episodes originally. And the barrel scene takes place at the end of the saga in the manga but they had to move it because they had no end point after the cut. I'm just speculating though, I have no proof.
    As for the writing, despite my overall love for this adaptation it was a mixed bag. The writing of the plot overall is pretty good beside some hiccup with Garp (his motivation is nonsensical, not only does his change in episode 6 mean nothing, but the reveal of his motive here makes no sense. You don't send Mihawk at your grandson because you wanted to make sure "he knew his worth/determination". That's not a test, that's just nonsense. But overall the addition of Garp as a reccuring antagonist and the reveal is good.
    My main issue is that the dialogue writing is very bad in a lot of key points. "I'll be the greatest swordsman in the world that ever was" is such a horrible line. I know it's a combination of two lines hence why it's so clunky but why they decided to combine them is weird. Luffy also has a lot of weak dialogue imo. Casting is impeccable though.

      I think Garp's motivation made perfect sense. He knows that as Luffy gets more notorious and crosses into the Grand Line that he will have many Marine's and Pirates chasing him that won't care if he dies. He chased him himself and sent Mihawk to show him the types of things he would be up against but in a controlled way where he knew his Grandson would ultimately be okay.

      @@CallistoTheWarriorQueen Doesn't make any sense to me. Showing him what waits for him is irrelevant because it's not like Luffy will be able to stop those threats anyway.
      Even if Luffy knows that Mihawk is in the grand line and how strong he is, it's not gonna change anything: Luffy still won't be able to do anything against people of Mihawk's level for years so that knowledge is useless.

    I'm fairly new fan of One Piece myself. I actually started the anime after watching the awesome Netflix live action series! I had no complaints about the live action, but after watching the anime the ONLY thing I wish they added was the fishman Hachi. I understand it would've been a difficult task to recreate him, but the Arlong Park fight scene is known for each Straw Hat member squaring up with a different Fishman. Usopp and Sanji had their moments, but if they recreated Zoro taking on the Six Sword style to live action that would've been the cherry on top to the final episode.
    I've enjoyed watching your reactions to this series, definitely excited for Season 2! Looking forward to the "Believe in Wonderland" OST.

    I love that this adaptation, unlike so many others that lean towards a dark adaptation or being edgy and cool, is just sincere, wears its heart on its sleeve and is full of goofiness and leaning into the silliness and colorfulness of this world!

    I love this series. I’m caught up to the latest chapters of the manga and I’ve been at it for a while. My biggest concern about the show was whether they would embrace the goofiness of the characters and the interactions they have but they really went all in. The cuts they made to side characters was understandable even tho I love Patty’s character and I wish we could have gotten more of him but they twisted the story in a way that made it easy to understand for people that had no idea what the world was about because looking back at the early story, it is a bit overwhelming at first and compressing almost the entire first arc into eight episodes is actually insane because there is so much to it but they did it brilliantly. Can’t wait for Smoker and season 2.

    When the biggest complaint people have is that they wanted more, you know they did aight.
    On a related note, my biggest hope for season 2 is that they get at least 10 episodes. You could cover it in that time, but my wet dream would be 12 episodes (I know, prolly way too expensive for that.)
    FWIW the show runner was asked, because they did the barrel scene already, if it was possible they might skip Loguetown, and said Absolutely Not.

    • @Phanthief95
      @Phanthief95 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      They’re definitely not skipping Loguetown for 2 reasons: It introduces Smoker & Dragon, who are major recurring characters throughout the series, & it’s where Zoro gets Yubashiri & Sandai Kitetsu, the 2 swords he gets to replace the ones that broke in his duel with Mihawk.

    Also one point many people don't know, Oda already said the main strawhats are Luffy, Nami and Zoro, those 2 are the right and left hand of Luffy, you will notice that every important moment in the anime, it's always one of the two that is with luffy at the time, so the show with limited time decided to focus on those 3, that's one of the reasons, sanji and usopp had less screen time.

    @HardTourVela 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    They definitely did a great job! What i think is lacking, due to the style and time, is all the introspection the characters go trough during some scenes, i.e., here usopp is more of a goofy friend than a coward, he has his own internal battle while fighting the fishmen which gives him more depth to his victory in the anime, while here, he came up with a witty plan, so newcomers don't see him becoming that brave warrior he tries to be

    I really enjoyed your reactions and can't wait for you to watch the second season. 🤗
    If they manage to do that well, it will be even more insane. In the manga "East Blue" is kinda the "worst" saga. Which is insane that the worst saga is still that good.
    And it just keeps getting better and better. One of the last chapters (1102) was imo the best chapter in manga history. 😉
    PS maybe she might be open to reading the manga? It's way faster (and way better) and a very good read. It's the most popular manga in history for a reason.
