  • The start up and run after I disassembled the engine to fix the starter clutch that failed and became loose from the crankshaft. Split the cases, Rebuilt the starter clutch, new piston rings, cylinder honed, new clutch plates, new oil seals, cleaned out the oil screen and reassembled the engine.

Good luck! I have the same bike, brought back from storage death. I can tell you the AF cover gasket LEAKS. I used rubber screen window bead and silicone grease to stop my air leak. Air cooled, watch long idling.... this is an extremely reliable bike once you de-bug! Very smooth & strong. Work white grease into shift pivots when shifter acts up.... it is not serious.

Hmm the air box cover leaks you say? Have not thought about that. May be the reason for a stumble here and there when revving. I will check that out after I put carb rebuild kits in the carbs. Thanks man

Yours may not leak. But mine did. Fixing this solved my engine response tuning problem. Have fun!

@@edwardallan197 thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely check it out. My main problem is my oil smelling like gas. Including the crankcase. Going to replace the float needles and hopefully that will fix the problem. I installed new piston rings so I’m hoping the fumes or gas isn’t getting in that way. That’s basically the only problem. I’ve had this problem before I took the engine apart.

@@jamesa6272 Sounds good! Besides float needles, check your old vacuum petcock. A leak in the vacuum valve diaphram is another fuel to oil route..... that little rubber diaphram is very old. I had to drill out the rivets on mine, tap for little bolts, and change the diaphrams. The OEM petcock is too expensive. You have a GREAT durable engine, it should run perfect, start in the cold with brief choke.

Hey James, any chance you have a video on how to remove the carburators of a 450 rebel? Would help me a lot 😅

Hey James. Does your rebel vibrate at higher rpm?

Hey. No it does not. Check to see if your tires are balanced.
