    I just bought one of these beauties a few months ago from a co-worker who was working on it for a guy on the side, who was finding somebody to fix and flip it for. It's making the exact same noise in almost the same wandering location. Some times, it sounds top end, other times, it sounds bottom end. I've had people tell me that it could be the clutch basket tapping the casing side, and another guy say it might be the timing chain needing a bering. I haven't rode it, since I don't know how severe it might be. I'm planning on finally draining and changing the oil to see if it's got glitter in it, since I've finally got some time to mess with it. I might also take the side covers off and look at the clutch since the oil's getting drained anyways. I saw in your comment above about it being the bolts on the starter clutch backing out. Is that internal, or under the clutch side cover where the clutch plate is?

    • @jamesa6272

      @@volksdude1970 it’s internal. I checked for everything before opening it up. I had people telling me 5 thousand things it could be. • @jamesa6272
      @jamesa6272 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey. Thank you. Not many videos of them out there on TH-cam. I’m sorry I don’t have the dimensions because I took it apart. It was a simple build I just measured the the top of the engine and made the stand by those dimensions. You’re going to be working on the engine upside down. Measure the top of the engine and go from there. Your going to have to loosen the motor mounts to get the middle cylinder head bolts out. They are long and they will hit the frame. You’ll have to maneuver the engine to get the middle bolts out. Do you have the free manual? If not here it is: www.hanssnel.nl/hanssnel/Manuals/CMX450C%20Rebel%2086-87%20Service.pdf I got most of the parts I needed from cmsnl, Partzilla, and eBay. Cms/Partzilla both have part diagrams that are extremely helpful for the fix. You’ll need a nice place to work on it with a lot of light. Once you dig into it it’s pretty simple. This was the first motorcycle engine I ever split the cases on. When you have the engine on your stand… you can do what I did and get a ratchet strap and hook it to the engine and your ceiling / rafters and pull the top case up. Instead of prying on anything of the engine. That idea I had worked fantastic. I also watched a lot of videos on cb360/cb350 tear downs and rebuilds. They helped a lot. Specifically “Saturdays wrench” channel on his cb350 rebuild

      @@edwardallan197 thanks for the advice! I’ll definitely check it out. My main problem is my oil smelling like gas. Including the crankcase. Going to replace the float needles and hopefully that will fix the problem. I installed new piston rings so I’m hoping the fumes or gas isn’t getting in that way. That’s basically the only problem. I’ve had this problem before I took the engine apart.

      @@jamesa6272 Sounds good! Besides float needles, check your old vacuum petcock. A leak in the vacuum valve diaphram is another fuel to oil route..... that little rubber diaphram is very old. I had to drill out the rivets on mine, tap for little bolts, and change the diaphrams. The OEM petcock is too expensive. You have a GREAT durable engine, it should run perfect, start in the cold with brief choke.

    If anyone is wondering the knock was the starter clutch. The bolts loosened from the crank shaft and caused the starter clutch to rattle and knock.

    Did the knocking happen after you adjusted the timing?

      @@jamesa6272 yea sorry I meant valves. That knocking doesn't sound good. It can be as simple as gas or timing, but it can also be something wrong internally like something warped.
