French person here, its very real. Something similar happened to me in the metro in January. The lady controller was physically holding me and i couldnt get away unless i paid 35eu, even after making a case to demand to be paid back after proving i was unjustly charged the RATP said they would send me a check and have yet to this day to receive it (and thats after sending them a reminder etc on 3 separate occasion.) They go after tourists, POCS and young people especially fem presenting on who seem "weak". So yeah be careful af

@@TaskuPallero I dont use the bus in Paris so I have no idea, in my city theres one at the entrance and some a bit further just to avoid cluttering the entrance but there should be one in front as they (conductor) check to see if you have your transports ID/ticket, you're no allowed to enter by the back or middle only the front so machine is by the front.
Maybe in order to conduct the scam they removed the machine? Genuinely no idea

I had a sort of scam like this happen while I was at Notre dame with my school. This lady had a clipboard and kept telling us as students we needed to band together and sign. I had heard of this because of Reddit and screamed at her to leave us alone She started yelling we didn't need to scream I started yelling SHE didn't need to try and scam us. Luckily our teacher was near by and once he showed up (Big buff ex marine American dude) She ran off. But dang it was scary

I am now proud to be Greek, in Greece nothing like this happens and most scammers Ive seen have been beaten up/ held to be arrested and some pickpockets I've seen were just verbaly confronted. 😁😁💪

I ran into them last year and when they asked for the "fee" on the metro. I pretended to look for my wallet and they waited patiently, but when the next stop came, i BOLTED off the metro and ran into a cafe about a kilometer from the spot and decided that taxis were the only transport from then on
Until the taxi driver asks you for 200€ after 5 minutes of driving LOL.
I literally can't even start describing how happy I am to see Tabbes come back.
Btw Tabbes I recommend going to Japan next time as vacation. I'm from there and it's relatively really safe. I think you'll be pretty interested of the culture, buildings, system, etc.

Jesus, from someone who lives around the area, I have never heard of this scam or dealt with it personally and this is so outrageous that this is allowed to continue. Sadly, knowing the state of our gov, it's not a big surprise that there's nothing being done there. Good on you for fighting them off, I sincerely hope that this will be tackled some day in the future.
If you ever go back to France, I highly suggest you go for the towns that's not in Paris or Marseille, even in the rural area. That's where the beauty of the country is.

This is not just funny and entertaining but VERY INFORMATIVE. Was thinking going to Paris one day in the future but never would I thought this would be real, making the bus like a cage to keep you hostage...
Just take the metro, take a look at the heures de pointes (rush hours) and buy tickets like Tabbes, but try to always get them validated (composté). They tried to scam her because she didn't validate the ticket, it sucks but if you have a T+ ticket, validate it, you're alright.
We french hate the RATP aswell and make a point of being as parisian as we can with them : obnoxious, unpolite, passive agressive, and overall judgemental and mean.

@@kiminimuchu__ Before entering a bus, metro or tram you need to get your ticket scanned. That's to make sure people who bought a one-way ticket for instance don't use it repeatedly, simple as.

1am rn, and I just HAD to figure out if Tabbes existed or not. I was lying in bed, and all of a sudden, tabbes popped into my head. I genuinely could not tell if tabbes was an actual real animator or if I just made all this shit up. Simply because of how crazy these stories are and how much of a fever dream they feel like. I was so conflicted with myself on whether she actually existed or if I just manufactured memories of watching this animator that never existed. Good to know I haven't completely lost my mind and one of my favorite animators is infact real, and not a hallucination. To my current understanding, I could also be hallucinating this.

I have been to France twice and my family have dealt with the same experience. It's one of the main reasons why we took ubers/taxis when we visited the country. And they too would scam us by making us pay 30 euros per trip. Before we started taking taxis and uber, we took only one bus ride. I even had to jump on a guy when he grabbed onto my dad's backpack. Frenchies can kiss my ass when it comes to public transit. Our tripped was only saved when my mother found an old high school friend who was living in France with a French husband who was more than happy to take us anywhere.

As a french person who rarely go to Paris, that story feels absolutely horrifying and the patience and will you've shown is incredible.
For better or for worse, that sort of elaborate scam exists mainly in Paris, so please don't think of it as the norm everywhere in France (although you obviously need to always be careful when you travel, no matter the place !)

As someone from the UK who visits France fairly often. There shouldn't be a need to cancel the trip. Have fun in life. Just avoid things that look like obvious scams and do your research on possible scams that exist in said country you are visiting. Most of the time, nothing will happen if you do your research on possible risks of scams ect. (Next part is assuming your from the US) The majority of European countries are developed to a similar degree as the United States. If anything the US is more dangerous than places like France, especially with scams. FTC data showed that in 2022, there has been a total of $8.8 billion to fraud. However in France, the total lost to fraud has only been approximately €400-500 million ($429-536 million USD). Just avoid looking like a dumb tourist who can fall easily to scams and watch your belongings closely. Don't let one video of a scam stop you from enjoying yourself.
In other words, cancel the trip if you think its necessary. But if you want to go and are afraid of scams, don't worry too much about them and do your research. Also do your best to avoid looking like the ideal target to said scams.
