    Just discovered this series, and I must say it is light years more informative, thought provoking and entertaining than anything here on TV in the U.S..😻👍🌹

    Yes, we will certainly be studying this phase in our cultural history in 100 years, and lawyers will become rich defending the victims of it and their descendants.
    We have created a dichotomy: a private condition in which we protect our children from every tiny discomfort, and a public one i which we assault them with every adult issue that's out there. How they will grow up and make sense of it is yet to be seen.
    The existential threat of all this has resulted in the "cancel culture" that is reminiscent of McCarthyism. It won't last, but it will do tremendous damage to individuals, as such movements have done in the past.

      @CavalierNTX 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Totally with you Karen, although McCarthy wasn't exactly wrong about commies in Hollywood and the military. Also, 'McCarthyism' ended fairly abruptly by all accounts when he was publicly condemned and shunned in the senate. Cancel culture is far more insidious and arguably 'The Enemy Within' that nobody has a clue how to deal with.
      One thing is for sure; we really don't need any more witch finder generals, but we do all need to stop being so soft, and squishy; AND especially not to those which we give the reigns to govern and educate us.

    If people took McCarthyism seriously we wouldn’t have cancel culture.

      Fed up by something they have very little understanding of, and that they are told to obssess about by right wing media pushing fear not knowledge So, instead of challenging the economic causes of anxiety and depression and social collapse, blame a minority of wigged out students and a few trans extremists. Great idea.

    This sounds very much like the argument discussed in ‘The Optimistic Child’ by Martin Seligman a book I read nearly 20 years ago, but the ‘Child’ is now in Uni. The child is never allowed to feel bad. Trophy for participating, awards handed out like lollies daily. I had to put up extra shelving to hold all the giant trophies. They never learn how to lose or how to make themselves feel better when things don’t go their way. They don’t need to, they always win. It is not preparing them for the real world. Now they are grown they cannot cope with losing an argument so they just call you names and walk out. You might find this book interesting Jack. Love your work and btw I dressed you as the Pope in 1989 Amnesty Show.

    I think the litmus test of these emotional outburst attacking "hurty words" is "Is the problem you are whining think about anything like as bad as personal bereavement of a much loved member of your family? If the answer is no, then learn to live with it. It will be good for you. That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger"

    Cognitive behavioural therapy is the answer but I’m afraid, especially in the trans sphere, it’s been actively fought against. It’s been called conversion therapy, and an affirmation model is in place instead.
    It’s hard watching people delve deeper into this ideological thinking, see them admit to developing anxiety or depression, and know the very thing that helped you out of depression is what’s discouraged within the group think.

      Props. I know CBT well . . . back to when it was a fledgling known as RET in early 1960s. It needs a re-branding . . . for the same reason it was re-branded before. The "cognitive" part is a non-starter nowadays. Not sure what I would suggest myself. Maybe something like: Holistic Consistency Training (?)

    • @Thishereahsea
      @Thishereahsea 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@QED_ that’s very interesting. I didn’t know it was re-branded.
      I like the idea of re-branding. Though I’m not sure holistic would work. I’ve seen that word in particular being mischaracterised, putting it on the same level as homeopathy. There is this mindset that the real solutions are in the medication, and that their problems aren’t real enough unless they need the medication.
      I think the problems so bad that a very straight forward and direct name that says “mental disorder defence” or something along those lines, of course more professional haha

    What concerns me is those who mercilessly cancel those who were or are not perfect...cancel the memory of those who in the past were a mixed bag of vice and virtue...don't start with living a moral life themselves. They also have a rather lopsided view of what virtue is and they do not grasp human nature is inclined to imperfection. The moral life requires personal moral reform...not of opinion but of the whole person most importantly of action. This firms habits of virtue. Cancelling others isn't the same as seeking to pursued and help others be more virtuous. It can be vicious, unforgiving and hypocritical. A person may want to save the planet but also be a liar, cheat, lazy, and addicted to all sorts of instant gratification compulsions that limit self control. While accusing others of fashionable faults they are far more depraved than those they cancel. Humour is a powerful tool for showing this up!

    More obssessive right wing 'catastrophising'. What we might study in the future is an old society coming to terms with a changing world, lacking the tools and, eventually, through legal and social adaptation, coming to terms with a different balance. The priniciple cause of proliferation of anxiety and depression, especially amongst the young, is the insecurity and precarity caused by the existing collapsing economic system, new tech. media reliance and lack of support caused by inadequate funding of services to support people who suffer. Want to simplify a complex issue? Check in with right wing GB news and diminish yourself. I work in education and have no issues in the classroom and I say what I like about gender, religion and politics and I ain't PC...how do I do this? Because I know how to be a teacher and encourage critical thinking.
