In defense of Ser Rodrick: he's old. He's a master of arms (right?) or WF's castelan. He's hardly Tywin Lannister.
He's over confident and who could blame him. The north has lived the EXACT SAME life for almost 300 yrs by this point. And prior to their. subservience to dragon lords (which was a fairly benevolent rule that didnt bother them much) life in the North was largely unchained for THOUSANDS OF YEARS.
Starks had ruled without real challenge for many many generations. The castle had never fallen. There was mo reason to think it would fall now.
They should've sent a damn escort. That was dumb.

Weirdly enough it was Bran who wanted to do more for Lady Hornwood by way of protection.
He wanted to send an armed guard to escort her back to her Castle but he did not say so and if he did it is likely that the older and 'wiser' heads would have ignored this proposal
    Here is the passage.
    /*
“Bolton's bastard is massing men at the Dreadfort,"
    she warned them.
"I hope he means to take them south to join his father at the Twins, but when I sent to ask his intent, he told me that no Bolton would be questioned by a woman. As if he were trueborn and had a right to that name.”
"Lord Bolton has never acknowledged the boy, so far as I know," Ser Rodrik said.
"I confess, I do not know him.”
    "Few do," she replied.
"He lived with his mother until two years past, when young Domeric died and left Bolton without an heir. That was when he brought his bastard to the Dreadfort. The boy is a sly creature by all accounts, and he has a servant who is almost as cruel as he is. Reek, they call the man. It’s said he never bathes. They hunt together, the Bastard and this Reek, and not for deer.
I've heard tales, things I can scarce believe, even of a Bolton.
And now that my lord husband and my sweet son have gone to the gods, the Bastard looks at my lands hungrily.”
_Bran wanted to give the lady a hundred men to defend her rights_
    but Ser Rodrik only said,
"He may look, but should he do more I promise you there will be dire retribution.
You will be safe enough, my lady… though perhaps in time, when your grief is passed, you may find it prudent to wed again.”*/

I did the math. It's unequivocal: Hornwood's fingers were flayed to get her to sign over the lands, which she refuses to do. She's left to starve to death after Ramsey and reek do their backup plan if just a shotgun wedding and some raping.
She wasn't bound. She was just locked in a room or in a tower. She could've consumed any part of herself if hunger drove herself to that, though of the 1000's of starvation stories we know all too well IRL, I've never heard someone eating part of THEMSELF as it's a self-defeating strategy. It's a net loss.
Still, if one were to do it (it's not unimaginable to consider), they would consume the portions that 1) have the most meat and 2) cause the lease amount of pain per calorie of sustenance (assuming a wound in that area won't kill you).
Fingers and toes are PACKED with nerve endings. They are favorite locales of experienced torturers. The slightest touch to any flayed flesh on the fingers or toes will get you the passcode and the names and the confessions you seek. Medieval peasants are giving away their bitcoin fortunes when you flat their fingers. If one is truly cruel and sadistic, one crushes the bones first, and THEN flays the digit.
Considering she could move freely within her cell, she would've selects a better spot

Ramsey story, in part, is based off of “Beowulf” aka Bear or a more literal translation Bee-wolf or in ASOIAF terms more like hive-wolf or Jon Snow(probably zombieJon, maybe Ghost/Jon). Anyway; Ramsey is Grendel , Lady Dustin is Grendel’s mother, Jon is Beowulf, Longhouse men are stolen from is the Twins, Theon and more specifically Rob are men stolen from the longhouse taken apart piece by piece, blackwater Weirwood at Winterfell is the blackwater lake, the Winterfell crypts are the cave lair beneath the blackwater where Grendel’s mother resides with her children.
Jon as Ghost or as Zombie, like Coldhands, or Jon returned to life will most likely remove Ramsey’s arm. Ramsey will retreat to the crypts where Lady Dustin, his actual mother, will be. Lady Dustin, a mother of mercy, will kill him with a iron sword, which will prevent his second life.

@@druggeddragon420 maybe, but dog death is probably a show thing. Lady Dustin will kill him as he is dying in the crypts with an iron sword.
It’s part of the “mother of mercy”/“woman scorned” plots/themes, since she is his actual mother: Brandon’s wife sworn by the tree. She is the pregnant girl in the black water by the Weirwood in the past begging tree for revenge. It’s based of a “Beowulf vs Grendel and Grendel’s mother” allusion; hence losing an arm like Grendel vs BeoWulf and killed by his mother. The iron sword is because Ramsey is a warg and would live a second life without being killed with it.

Trapped animals eat their injured paws, Rob(Reek) chews his since Greywind is living a second life inside him. It’s why he sleeps in the dog pack as well.
Hornwood starved is a historical allusion, i forget who she was; but “forgetting to feed her” while locked in a tower is from that. Probably where “Buffalo Bill’s victims” get their inspiration from as well. Ramsey probably didn’t flay her, rather she clawed at the door til her fingers were bloody and chewed off them for food/to end the infected pain like Reek(Rob).
All the references to fingers, like these and others like locations, are meant for us to count Reeks fingers. Reek gains fingers back and could lose more than seemingly possible since their are multiple Reeks currently running around. Ramsey removes some, Ramsey’s Castilian at Winterfell removes some while Ramsey is at Moat Cailin with Reek(Rob), and some are chewed off. I believe the counts are 5 and 2 (bow drawing hand) for Theon(Reek) ; 3 and 4 (sword hand) for Rob(Reek). It’s why Reek can be found innocent of the stabbing murders at Winterfell (no thumb on sword hand) but can hold a sword at Moat Cailin to stab the dying Ironborn leader. When Reek(Theon) shows his two fingers to The Hooded Man aka Reek(Rob), Theon is flipping him of “British style “. He shows his fingers to Lady Dustin so she can tell which Reek she is talking to since the “Hooded man Reek(Rob” had just been in to see her heading past Theon(Reek) going the opposite direction in reverse symmetry. (Bara)theon and (King)Rob are both King Robert’s bastards. Just like Euron’s birth, Theon’s caused a Ironborn rebellion; since “It’s good to be the king”, both are king’s bastards. Cat dealt with it “better” than Balon’s wife did probably since Cat’s was more her choice and Ned was cheating on her too.

A person is no animal. It's pretty rare for trapped people to cut off their own limbs let alone CHEW them off.
I've heard stories of old cemeteries being excavated to find coffins with scratch marks but idk. I think the pain is far too great for someone to wear the skin down to the bone in such a desperate act.
This is how george sets up and confirms his devious twists. It's hidden in long exposition and therefor ignored by 99% of us the first time thru
Someone catches it eventually and it's further supported by a similar example being given.
I thought Reek - er, i mean Theon - DOES chew a finger off. He's MAD with pain.
Regardless, we all know am they were chewed off as a meal, like a McDonalds small fry.
The math tells me she chewed them off in a frantic desperate attempt to ease the ungodly pain she was enduring.
It's no easy feat to CHEW off your own fingers bc of how sensitive they are. Every finger and tow is just FULL of nerve endings.
I daresay they are more sensitive to pain than even one's private parts.
We need justice for Lady Horneood

@@burtan2000 did you miss the first sentence where I said Greywind (the Direwolf) is living a second life inside Rob? Maybe you’re not remembering that Wargs take a piece of their spirit animals inside of them? But, even if that isn’t true….
There are numerous stories of people getting trapped and cutting their limbs of including with their teeth. They made a movie about that mountain climber. But…
That doesn’t even matter since ?as you pointed out? Reek(Rob) chews his own fingers in the books, so whether or not it’s possible is irrelevant.
Reek did go mad with pain, but the metaphor is he’s a trapped animal and on top of that has Greywind inside of him influencing him to act like an animal in a cage trapped.
Being that you weirdly contradict yourself I gotta ask, are you a bot? Burtan2000 a reference to Hal? You gotta tell me if you are.
