I'm learning this stuff for the first time. The explanations are so clear and memorable. They just remind me of how my brother dressed and how he always tried to drive it into my thick skull to learn these things. It depends where you live and the culture of that place. For example in UK people wear brogues on weddings with formal suits. So it's not taking style casually I think it's about the region and history of that region along with their culture and definition of scale of formality in that region and culture.

    • @mydogskips2
      @mydogskips2 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      Not to show my ignorance too much here, but I actually thought full-brogue wingtips were the most formal shoe, not casual. I thought plain oxfords were exactly that, plain, rather dull and boring looking, not ornate enough, and as such they would be considered more casual. I do now appreciate why that's not really the case, but I still think to some degree wingtips can be, and widely are, considered a formal shoe. Maybe not in high-society, probably not, but they're not the group I hobnob with. In fact, where I live, just wearing shoes at all could be considered formal. ; )
      And I'm not sure, but I bet if I asked my 11-year-old nephew which shoe looks more fancy, my black wingtips or plain oxfords, he'd probably say the wingtips, and he'd answer the same if I asked which was more formal, which I should wear to a social gathering.

    • @jko8888
      @jko8888 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      There are certainly a lot of variations among cultures and regions. I think what impresses me more in terms of formality, is the care given to the shoes. I often notice guys wearing a very nice business suit and tie, but their shoes are scuffed and worn. A good polish along with a mirror shined heel and toe can make all the difference in terms of formality. The mirror shine especially can give a plain oxford an amazingly formal look. So don't think too much about what shoe you're wearing to a formal event, but definitely give it some care before you wear them there!

    Opera Pumps/Court shoes are still the most formal footwear you can wear today, only worn with white tie and formal interpretations of black tie. Balmoral boots also deserves a spot since they are worn with full Morning Dress. Although it's nice to see someone like Antonio give new people a good introduction to formal footwear.

    Great video, good explanation. I personally love Van Bommel shoes, they range from formal to more casual. They are really comfortable, too. I am a fan of Brogues myself. I wear size US13/UK12/EU46, so a more formal shoe makes my feet look really big. Or atleast, I think they do, because I'm looking down to a flat surface.

  • @ericduan19

    Antonio, love your videos! i have some additional information on shoes for you.
    in many southeast asian countries, shoes with rubber sole could still be considered formal. because it rains more frequently here so rubber sole became a very common shoe build. its just practical, and no one will blame you for that.
    hope this helps!

  • @mhj4867
    @mhj4867 6 ปีที่แล้ว +22

    Imho, the point of having a dress boot (balmoral/derby) is so you can still look dressy on snowy or rainy days. When you wear a well made balmoral boots, you will still looks like wearing a normal oxford shoes. Look at most balmoral boots, most of the top part of the upper made of suede so it looks like a sock.
    So dress boots are actually on the same level of formality with their low cut sister shoes.

    Antonio, a very good, informative video as always. But the level of formality depends also on the width of the sole, the size of the toebox and the form of the dress shoe, as the more round to be more casual and the more elongated (as all of the shoes of AceMarks you showed us) to be more dressy.

    Interesting to learn more about shoes. Growing up in a blue-collar household, every shoe made of leather other than mocassins, boots and trainers was just called "classic shoe" and considered formal.
    While I believe that in today's supercasual world dominated by trainers and running shoes also brogues and Chelsea boots would make the cut as somewhat formal, it was still nice to get more insights on the topic.

    Thanks for these great shoe style tips. But I wanted to point out something that I learned relatively recently, and that's that your shoe size can actually change as you grow older, often increasing a half-size or more. I had wrongly assumed with a recent order of shoes that there was a manufacturing problem and that the shoes were cut too tight. But what really happened was that I needed to move up a full size because my size had changed, though the width remained the same. Obviously, no matter how fabulous the quality and style of your shoes for the occasion, if they aren't comfortable, they're not going to work out for you. So, as you grow older, I'd recommend actually measuring your shoe size from time to time.

    Very informative especially since I am wanting to add more of classic man style like the hip hop artist Jidena even started looking at raising the bar on my watch wear for work and and more formal setting since I have gotten into the firefighter profession.

    Good morning sir! I love the video. It has really helped me to identify which shoes I want for certain occasion's. However, as you're asking for a different opinion I'd like to add mine. I wanna put the dress boots and the number 6 spot instead of the Chelsea's. I think that the dress boot as a way of commanding attention when wearing it a suit but nuts to a very formal setting. For example in a simple business setting. A good way to show off without looking obnoxious.

    I didn't go to Acemarks until after the vid, because I didn't want to get my hopes up. Many places I have seen posted on the internet only have shoes that go up to a 12 or 13. Depending on the cut of the shoe, I wear anything from a 13-15. It was refreshing to see that they at least have 14 and 14s. I liked your video, and generally agree with everything you said... though due to trying to keep most of the focus off of my feet, I believe I will still forego the grey shoes.

    This is a great video, Antonio! It's well explained, organized, and concise. I noticed that you left out Phoenicians. Based on this video, I would put them in the same category as Derbies or Bluchers. What do you think?

But not like have the funds to go purchase an oxford, right now environmental/energy analyst employment oppertunities are non existent.

    Great info, though I'd have to disagree on your point about closed lacing dress boots, as I consider them a lot more formal than you sugested. They basically were like an oxford in formality historically, although I guess they're slightly more casual today, like a Derby or so. Anyway, that's just my opinion and keep up the good videos!
