This song came out when I was a teen. I am 63 now. GFR was a proper rock band and sold out large venues. I will bet a kabillion dollars no adult put her onto this. She may have searhed "funk" and this came up. Her ear is extraordinary and as any fan can see she loves to rock! Love the stank faces she makes on this! She looks like she is having such fun! That's why we often watch this at least once a week. Like a shot of antidepressants!

@@AndrewRooneyDrums Your biggest problem in covering her is isolation her age in this video (9 years old) and then continuously saying what people that age GENERICALLY do while omitting Yoyoka's experience up until this point. That's kind of the key.
Remember, she's playing since she was 2 at this point. So, that's 7 years of experience. The average 9 year old that YOU deal with probably decided that year that they were going to take up the drums.
      Big difference, wouldn't you say?
What you're doing is the equivalent of talking about tendencies of first year martial arts students versus a black belt. It's not fair for either ranking, even though they may be the same age.

How many adult drummers do you know that got signed to pro endorsements from Pearl, Zildjian, TAMA, Paiste and DW when they were 8?
I think that's the difference here, man. Yoyoka Soma right now at 11 has had those major endorsements for 3 years and has been playing for 9 years in total, in bands and doing sessions work and the occasional clinic.
How many adult drummers that you know were inducted into the Drummer World Magazine Top 500 Drummers of ALL TIME, when they were 10?
Those may be some factors that separate the guys you know from young Soma-sama here. lol

Her high sticking reminds me of Bruce Lee unleashing his nunchuks. Welcome to the Yoyoka Tribe, where if her parents ever wanted to go off on a solo romantic vacation, we'd all be bidding for the chance to babysit her for two weeks and sending letters of reference. Some other young drummers may have a following, but she's the only one I've ever seen who can turn a bad day into a, well, not so bad one, just by watching a couple of her videos (this goes for me as well as hundreds of others here). It's not only her god-given talent and her nuclear-powered right foot, it's the exuberance and joy that she brings to everything she does. In a word, astounding.

Great video. Grand Funk Railroad was a great band. I believe the drummer's name is Don Brewster. He also sings, back up and lead on some songs. I saw him on a Modern Drummer Festival video. Tall gangly guy--interesting contrast with a petite girl--nice chap with no pretentious. He flubbed the intro to this song while demonstrating it on the video. No big deal. Just started again and nailed it. I found it encouraging. It showed that even the pros can make a mistake now and then. And it's not the end of the world.
    Thanks for what you do.

You said something that resonated very well with me, I'm not a drummer but I play an Roland electric kit to record song ideas (I play guitar mainly). I have found that I can move the snare and bass drum around quite easily on eighth notes when playing eighth notes on the ride or hi-hat, but as soon as I try doing it when playing quarter notes on the hi-hat (or ride) I feel locked and cant syncopate the bass or snare easily at all, I have to think about it a lot more and focus much harder (and still fail)... I'm glad it is supposed to be more difficult, i thought it should have been easier but it makes sense now you pointed it out... thanks

    Keep up the great analysis.

Regarding hearing a blip only a drummer would notice. All drummers have done it. Two things you should know about this. Yoyoka usually makes only 1 take on her covers. She purposely leaves any error in. She doesn't edit them out. Once, she actually showed herself recovering from a dropped drumstick and not miss a beat. Also of note, she doesn't read music, yet. She listens to a track a few times, analyzes and memorizes the drum patterns, then usually does her cover. I'm not sure if she sees any original videos as well, which would help a lot. Also, I don't know how much her drum teacher participates in analyzing and memorizing these covers. That would be amazing for any drummer, but a preteen girl? Wow. I enjoy your channel.

I watched Bo Diddley and Buddy Holly in the mid to late 50's. the drummers had cymbals, but hardly ever hit them; even the hi-hat could hardly be heard. So who started using the cymbals more?

    • @chrisegbertky
      @chrisegbertky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I know most jazz greats had a section in their drum solos on the high hat cymbals. Buddy Rich for sure. Gene Krupa worked closely with Zildjian to develop a lot of the cymbals we take for granted as a "standard" part of the drum kit.

Agreed, Never Heard of Grand Funk Railroad, Utter Blasphemy!!!!! Sold Out Shea Stadium faster than The Beatles. They were "removed" from the stage by Led Zeppellin's manager for being so good. They were a warm up band for the Atlanta Pop Fesival on Day 1. On the last day, They were headlining. Multiple Gold and Platinum albums, AND...... STILL NOT IN THE ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME!!!!! What's wrong with this world?

      They SHOULD be in RRHOF.
I don’t expect they made it to New Zealand, and Andrew is way too young for when they peaked in Australia 1969-1974. Looks like their cover of “Locomotion” in 74 was their only big hit on the AU charts. Though the albums did well. And “Some Kind of Wonderful” just cracked the top 40. (NZ data is too hard to sort through)

@@ms.chuckfu1088 All valid points. Kudos on the research Ms. As an over 60 rocker, I get enjoyment from listening to Grand Funk just as listening to Isaac Hayes, Motorhead, Pink Floyd, or Iron Maiden. I think Homer Simpson said it best: "Nobody knows the band Grand Funk? The wild shirtless lyrics of Mark Farner, The bong rattling bass of Mel Schacher, The competent drum work of Don Brewer. Oh Man!! For more information on Grand Funk consult your public library".

The thing with this girl is that she matches her confidence with ability - and then approach drumming with said confidence. She is not indicating that she taps the drum correctly, she hammers her sticks from well behind her shoulders, punishing the drum to sound right. She performs like a honed target-man on a football (soccer for some of you) team. A goal does not have to be pretty to be a goal and my vibe is to tap them in like crazy like a rock-drummer should do. Just like one of her heroes of Nirvana/Foo Fighter fame motto - if in doubt hit harder while staying steady.
Message to young aspiring boys - I know there are heaps of videos of talented girls playing the drums now. Do not say "F it" just yet. Remember that a good girl drummer is a novelty because of traditions centuries older than your age. Also, pay attention to work-ethics - girls work hard because of the same century-old history of having to prove themselves.
We dudes think Ronaldo is a pretty good target man in football. Take a quick google search of how he looked before signing his talent to Manchester United and how he looked after leaving that club. Kid had done more sit-ups than most of us to become better - instead of hanging out with mates as already rich 15 years ago. He is still practising now paid a billion a year for working hard to become better.
Ronaldo is never pleased with his abs - he is constantly striving to become stronger, faster, more dangerous and lethal - instead of going to a bar and spend 10000 dollars on champaign.
The message to us boys is that we must stop dreaming to be good. We must work our ass off to become even decent. If we want to run 10 km in a time that creates attention these days, we better have to do it in 27 minutes or less. And that is insane. Even if we want to be decent locally, priorities must happen. Talent or gender is no longer a qualifying idea. We must practice.

Well said. Nowadays, it seems that anyone with a computer and some composing software think they can be the next “music star.” They have neither the understanding nor patience for the amount of work (practice) and dedication that goes into achieving true musicianship and talent. Yoyoka seems to have a natural gift for drumming, but practicing daily since she was a tot is what separates her from a lot of wannabes.

You never heard that song? GFR is a band that is a must for all of my drum students. Don Brewer is a perfect example of simplicity with solidity and power and the occasional flashy fill that works in most any rock context. It's also fun music to play. Check out their first three albums. The first one has the drums mixed insanely high and includes a 5 minute drum solo!
