From the little research i’ve just done, it looks like based on the numbers reported Google’s revenue from safari was around $50B before giving $18B to Apple which is just under 36% of google revenue.
Which means that google give apple around 6.50% of their total revenue each year.
I am shocked if Google's revenue from Safari is $50B. I need to look that up. 😳
It’s not that Apple would switch to Bing. It’s that Apple would start their own search engine.

I disagree, they give very good arguments on the video.
If Apple would make its own search engine it will suck for many years. It's very hard to make it work. Just look at Google's competitors. No matter how much money you have or your search volume the state-of-the-art tuning of technology is what makes Google so powerful. I bet the Apple search engine would be on the level of Bing, just + the Apple user base.
@@Mackcolak-xf5bkthe issue many people would still use it just because it is in there ,you forget that many elderly people especially don’t care about the search engines even many young people that don’t care about tech will not care if Apple created their search engine ,Google will automatically lose a big percentage of users if Apple would create their own search engine as many people will use whatever it is as default
@@Omar-kl3xp Yes, it's true about the default option. But Macs and iPhones are not a big percent of global device share. Also, Bing and Edge are the default options on Windows, yet their actual usage is minuscule because most people switch to Chrome as soon as possible.
The reason they pay Apple 36% isn't because they are scared of Bing. I think that 36% is incentive enough for Apple not to spend the R&D to create their own search engine and possibly create another competitor to Google and Bing.
Marques is right, would Apple really compromise their "we deliver the best of the best, optimized, magic devices" image/ philosophy by presenting their customers with BING? Never. My phone, tablet, and laptop are Apple products. I would think Apple had lost their mind if they just started presenting me with Bing. I would sincerely question the quality of every product they released going forward. I would just switch my default browser. I would literally swap out Safari for Chrome on my phone, which I already do on my laptop, and then they would really be pushing people off of their own apps.
Googles qulity has been so trash reactly. Other Search engines are legit better right now. Its just that google is to tightly intergrated into our lives we dont see or use other engines.
Bing is not that much worse than Google these days

I did a factory reset on my pc 4-5 weeks ago and due to all the AI bullshit I decided to give Edge a try (with bing's search engine obvi) and it was just as terrible as I had remembered. Not to mention that being a good English search engine is one thing, but there are other languages too and google is just hands down superior when it comes to browsing the web in any language other than English.
@@IpelengMotsatsi google is fine, its not great ofcourse, but it gets the job done. I moved to duckduckgo for quite a while, but there were some things i missed so came back. Bing feels bloated but umm, microsoft is doing well with their other apps tho (like office and teams).
This is the same argument people make with Chrome vs the rest. The other options are just as good if not better.

I am a blog owner, small blog. Google index my blogs in less than 5 minutes now, bing I don't even know, maybe days, and I have index now turned on, and I regularly submit my url to bing too

If Google refuses to pay, Apple will enter the search market and develop their own engine. That’s what Google is really afraid of.
Right now, Bing is already so good that if Apple switches default to it, many, even some of the nerds, will just stay there and adopt it.

With regard to Marques's hot take, his logic of Google not paying could apply to either Apple or MKBHD. Both businesses get paid for traffic to Google. The only slight difference is Marques gets paid for TH-cam content and Apple for search engine traffic. His question could be : Is Google wasting money by paying MKBHD for content? After all, where is Marques gonna go? The reality is Google doesn't want anyone considering an Open AI app or Tik Tok as a viable alternative. They will continue to pay both Apple and MKBHD because both make Google a ton of money.
I'm with Marques, there's no need for Google to pay Apple. And I've been saying it for years. (Apple) People would change to Google search on their own.

What would be your dream search engine if you could build it from the ground up? Imagine being able to choose "per search" how you wanted it to search based on your interests at the time, but you could turn that on and off and the engine never stored that beyond the life of that search. What kind of engine might Apple design? or Perhaps there is one running at HQ that no one outside of HQ knows about....Apple could choose or not choose for that to see the light of day.....use Google money to pay for it the whole time. Expensive hobby, until _______.
I would be surprised if they don't have an early alpha version of their own search. Just so that if they ever need it.
I think Apple is more likely create their own search engine this use Bing. They've got the money. And they created Apple Maps when they didn't want to use Google Maps.
If they create their own, they can’t put it as default they have to make it a choice and 98% of people would end up choosing Google, they can’t put their own as the default because they will get sued by someone and probably the Feds.
Google pays Apple because even though Google dominates web search, they are ensuring that FUTURE generations associate with search with Google. For them it's a worthwhile investment. Even if it is a little evil.
Marquess it seems haven't really used bing in a while. Much better than it used to be only 2 years ago.

I agree with Marques. “Regular” consumers know bing sucks and we all prefer google. Im gonna use google every single time. I have a google shortcut that I use primarily on my iPhone.

Did everyone forgot that there was a time that Bing was the default browser for a little bit? I think it was when google Maps and TH-cam were leaving the iPhone as the default as well.
Marques is right....I would legit lose mind if I search something and Bing results shows. Google is always default. It's crazy, however, they'd be willing to pay apple that much.
Great video. I think they had the SAME “hot take” about Google Maps and Flash AND Intel chips. At some point Apple WILL try it when you back them into an untenable position.
apple maps seems really good, but it feels more like Bing of maps (lots of features, but still doesn't get things done that well) than an actual thing I'd use.

I doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference between bing and google results without the branding. Feels like the quality of google searches has fallen off over the last couple years.

Honestly, here in India. People who use iPhones don't give a shit about their search engine or siri. They don't even use their assistant. Most of them,at least the people I know. They don't care. It's just a brand thing here for most.
Coming from android user who owned Samsung S series. Just got the iPhone 15 pro max and Siri is absolutely bad comparison to google assistant

It’s funny how they always rip on Siri but I never have a problem with it. I use it to control my smart devices, reminders, timers etc and works consistently well. Tried Google assistant and really didn’t see a difference

Even the most basic voice assistants work well for that
The problem with Siri is when you start asking questions - a lot of times Siri won't know how to answer you or will just provide a list of search results from the web while Google Assistant will actually answer your question
But nowadays with LLMs even Google Assistant is barely good in comparison since it doesn't really understand anything and just spits information from the web
Once Apple integrates some sort of an LLM in Siri, it'll be much better
This is also why Google is working on Google Assistant with Bard now
@@liraz747 exactly, none are a Star Trek AI assistant in your pocket yet but they always act like googles is in comparison which I find amusing. For questions I use gpt now and it is far far far better than any assistant.

My mom is the most technologically challenged person I know, and even she has called me before because her browser updated and the default search engine changed. She was so confused and thought her computer broke because she couldn’t find her email, calendar and documents. IT MATTERS.
I think you sort of answered your own question - Google makes profit from data and ads, which probably means that the percentage they're giving off to Apple must be marginal compared to the benefits of an entire (widely used) eco-system worth of users using Google.

The hard part of a search engine isn’t the search engine - it’s the framework to serve and sell ads on that search engine. Massively complex.

I disagree with Marques. Anyone would pay Apple to be the default. A Chinese search engine would probably pay the most if that would fly with the American public.
Also, the only reason Apple doesn’t build their own is because data monetization is something they stray away from. There would be no reason to build a complex unmonetized product in an SE. Instead let google make their money and pay Apple a share.
Snowden, Binney, and Shipp told me enough about Google to stay clear of them.

There are certainly niche things where google search just doesn’t work well and it’s filled with ads and useless articles, but I don’t know how mainstream that goes
If apple switched it to bing, at the very least 80% of iOS and Mac users would keep it that way. The average user won't change it to Google.
Just look at how many people change it to Google on Windows computers, most people don't care.

That shows you the power Apple has. Definitely google was worrying about Apple developing and releasing their own research platform. And when Apple invests in something, on the midterm and way better on the long term, it’s hard for others to compete with them. At least, Google will have a strong competitor and will loose some money knowing that Apple users are really into Apple ecosystem and always follow what they do. This is how addicted they are to that brand. Apple just needs to hire some people from Google and pay them a lot to develop a platform people will end up loving.
Platform like chrome? Because this engine is free.

DuckDuckGo is a great search engine. I currently use it.
Google pays because they need the reach of iPhones. If they know what the apple users want they can advertise and sell and make more money than what they pay. It’s a calculated expense

Total would be insane, so definitely not total. And regarding the percentage of Apple's revenue, probably "only" like 2%. After all, Apple is a trillion dollar company...
Apple's net profits in the last 3 years have been around 100 billion. So if it's 18 billion, then it would be around 18%.

First time I’ve disagreed with MKBHD. I can totally imagine apple to switch to bing out of spite. And most users won’t care since most users are lazy. The quality of the service between bing and google is small enough that people won’t care as long as they get their search results. Most searching is going on TikTok and Amazon anyways, pulling away the value of the search engine on the default browser.

We might be overestimating how bad Bing is. Personally I have switched from Google to chat gpt when I want specific answers and don't wanna waste time on the reading articles. Microsoft already owns open AI..Bing might actually become the new popular search engine if Microsoft doesn't skypes all over it.

Google search has become more and more shit over the past 5 years for users. A search is 50% ads to not the right type of content. Even Google Images has become terrible. The first AI driven search engine that can communicate to what a user is after and make suggestions on images, purchases and content could replace Google in 2 years.
Google Images truly sucks. You get way better results by using a reverse image search website... on Google.

It's almost always true but it's also true that who ever came first and take the domination wins for a while, that's why most people install Google maps even do there is apple maps by default, a lot of people use spotify when there's apple music by default, and so on, I don't believe apple would just change to Bing, I think they would make a search engine from scratch
