Rolling stones magazine, who's opinions I don't hold in high regard, just released their top 200 rock singers. Out of curiosity, I was checking to see if my favorite singer, Peter Cetera was on it. Of course he wasn't, how could he be overlooked? Karen Carpenter was on the list none of her songs were rock, they were ballads and pop. Peter at least had a rock phase in the late 60s and early 70s and he rocked. Rollingstones has a thing against Chicago, for sure.

Sounds good! Concerning the history of change here as far as groups, there’s always going to be someone who does solo work, whether they balance it out with group work or go solo entirely. Other members in Chicago still did solo projects while being in the group then and there, so I can understand the double standard concerning Peter. However, I can also understand the group wanting to maintain it’s democracy standard. Also, the reality is nothing stays the same forever. Peter, Jason, Jeff and Neil each brought and bring their own uniqueness, and no one should expect any comparison.

The only reason why I don’t wish to the heavens that Pankow and the Horn pricks never drove Cetera away was that Chicago 18 actually was an overall good album. I wouldn’t exchange “Will You Still Love Me” or “If She Would’ve Been Faithful” for any song on Chicago 16 or 17. Besides that, the band took actually a bigger hit when they lost Cetera more than they did when they lost Kath.

Cetera had carried the band from the time Terry Kath died until he said goodbye in ‘85.
Whether you agree, or not, Cetera WAS the de facto voice of Chicago. He was the star that the band never intended to have and it was only a matter of time before the inevitable happened.
When Kath died, most of the group was mired with drug abuse and their avant-garde sound wasn’t as popular as their ballads. Cetera gave the band their first Number 1 hit with If You Leave Me Now in ‘76. The song was added at the last minute as a tune to round out the album. It was never intended to be a hit, but it instantly captured the heart of millions all over the world. At that point, their fans wanted more and demanded it from them.
The group eventually fired their producer, James Guercio, and lost their record label because they wanted to be more experimental and the label wanted more ballads that could be played on radio, without editing it for time. Chicago had a double threat of drugs and writer’s block. They floundered while struggling to kick their bad habits and write music that would keep them on the radio with money coming in.
Cetera finally got David Foster to be their producer and he brought Bill Champlin in as part of the deal. After hearing the material they’d written for what was going to be their 16th album, Foster quickly scrapped all of it and began working with them on all new material that would get them back on the radio and generate a few hits along the way. Cetera looked ahead and realized that the band would have to start making music videos in order to get back on the radio and to climb the Billboard charts, so he kicked the drugs and cigarettes and got himself into shape. The turnaround paid off big time, but it also served to make him the frontman of a band that was formed as a democracy where all are equal and no one person more important than another. This didn’t sit well with the rest and the inevitable friction began.
By ‘84, Cetera had pretty much had it with the exhausting touring schedule and he also wanted to take some time off to be with his new family and to work on his solo career, so he made several proposals to the band to change things up a little bit. The rest of the band was not receptive to Cetera and drafted a contract that would’ve maintained the status quo and kept him in anonymity. Cetera rejected the contract and told them that he would be leaving after the completion of their Chicago 17 tour in ‘85.
After Cetera left, the band eventually found Jason Scheff, and with the help of Scheff and Champlin, they were able to churn out a couple more successful albums, complete with a handful of hits that kept them on the radio and at the top of the charts. Cetera had limited success in his solo career, but he never became the breakthrough star he thought he’d be because he refused to tour extensively to support his albums and the music industry wanted him to rejoin Chicago and pick up where he left off.
That dream was never to come true. Chicago isn’t really Chicago anymore, at least not the band most people remember them being in the 70s and 80s. With only 3 founding members still in the group, they sound more like a very good Chicago tribute band than Chicago. Peter Cetera ended his career doing limited dates with a symphony as his backup. His voice is tired and he had to key down the songs that everyone knows and loves in order to not embarrass himself on stage. He finally waived the white flag of retirement a couple of years ago and is enjoying his golden years with his daughters in Idaho.
The one thing I believe most fans would love to see is for all of the original members get together with Bill Champlin and Chris Pinnick and do a 12 or maybe a 15 city farewell tour, just as a last hurrah… but I’m not holding my breath.

@@michaelshaffer8451 Wow, you said a lot. There were a few things that weren't accurate though. Peter didn't bring in Foster, it was Danny Seraphine that brought him in. And Cetera was already getting into shape before MTV was around. He was sober in the late 70s when most of his band mates weren't. They fired their manager because he cheated them for yrs from the contract they signed.

+sldl04 : Peter Cetera and Jason Scheff are two different people, two different singers. Jason Scheff does an awesome job with the band doing HIS own thing. It isn't fair to compare apples to oranges. If it was Cetera who replaced Scheff, there would be the comparison there too. Chicago was great with Cetera and is still great with Scheff.
