  • Here is my review and demonstration of Pioneer DJ's latest DJ entry-level DJ controller for Rekordbox DJ, the DDJ-400. Also did a comparison with Pioneer's entry level DJ controller for Serato DJ, the DDJ-SB3.

    A year later I just purchased a ddj 400, and it's awesome, it pretty much does everything high end controllers do at a fraction of the cost....
    These entry level controllers really are jammed full of specifications.
    Awesome pioneer!

      @MrPoblijon 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely agree. I'm a beginner, but it simply does everything I need. Switching occasionally to NXS2 players, when playing in a lab, is just smooth... The layout and gained familiarity with Rekordbox helps it a lot. And finally, when I screw up while mixing, I can hardly blame the controller, right ;-)

    I use the DDJ 400 for drum and base and I only started DJing recently and it's such a nice and simple design making it easier to match up your BPM and the small amount of resistance on the tempo slider also allows you to be more accurate with your beat matching. 😁😁

    Bro, I find myself just watching your videos because of how detailed, honest, real, and real-life your opinions are. Fantastic job man. Just invested in an SZ2. Not because of the hype, but because where I am from, the big party promoters don't only respect your skill, but also your equipment. If I step out on a big stage with my SB, I will get laughs, and potentially lose out on future jobs.

    • @priyonjoni
      @priyonjoni  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Pay Ralph I don’t care if people laugh or don’t hire me. All I know is, despite it all, Pioneer DJ hired me. I still only use my SB3 at most gigs. I just got rid of the ones who would have given me a headache.

    Thought I was crazy when I first noticed that Rekordbox DJ software doesn't translate a very tight scratch effect. Of course I assumed it was my xdj-rx2, and not the software, which gave a noticeably wobbly and softer sounding slow scratch.

    I've been really happy with the DDJ-400, it'll handle everything I do for a long time (mix DJ, house, pop, rap). This is a great video, really really great video; sweet spot combination of review and mini tutorial. Great job on this vid, been a subscriber for a while! I use the DDJ-400 with Rekordbox and it's worked great, nice having full feature set / license for a complete and competent software package right with the controller, thanks Pioneer!

    I would recommend the DDJ-400 to ALL beginners mostly because it comes with a fully-featured DJ software that you won't have to cough up additional cash to use, so from beginner to intermediate to advanced you could be using the same software and never have hidden costs.
    Another plus for the DDJ-400 is the layout, it's designed to be similar to club-standard CDJ/DJM set-ups, so if a beginner ever ends up getting serious and plays a venue, they will already be somewhat familiar with the club-standard equipment without having to relearn controls.
    All this, and it's the same price as the SB3. The only people I'd recommend a SB3 for are absolute bedroom DJ's, the type who just want to mix for fun, drop a mix on Soundcloud, or play small house parties but don't have plans to play at clubs. Even then, why not just use the 400 when it comes with, again, a FULLY-featured software.

    • @priyonjoni
      @priyonjoni  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      well, I used my SB3 at a music festival once or twice. From a strictly hardware standpoint, the DAC held up quite adequately for a "bedroom only" piece. th-cam.com/video/z4DP7Yog8LY/w-d-xo.html

    You know there's nothing like good old turntables and see DJs but I think you're right on the mark with this. They have these crazy big ass controllers and they just look ridiculous overtime. I'm not saying I wouldn't want one but some of them just get stupid and the little ones do everything you could ever want. Keep it Hood, keep it good

  • @jaklawrence4301
    @jaklawrence4301 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Rekordbox is the selling point really. In the UK club scene, regardless of genre, if you're going to play a set somewhere on their equipment (which is the norm, and it's usually 2-3 XDJs and a mixer) then being able to build a playllist in your home studio, export it onto a USB and know it'll plug in and work - then DDJ-400 all the way. Maybe I'm just biased because the DDJ-400 is what lives in MY house.

      This one is very good, check the second hand market as well. A mixer for some very cheap turntables I bought used is helping me distract, and giving me some sense of acomplishment on my slow progress. It is helping me with my mental health so much I want to buy a compact controller (more compact than this one) for using it outside of home, having it in my bag and so.

    Got my first SB2 a few years ago when they first hit. I'm a regular gigging mobile, and use it multiple times a week. It got water damaged in November 2017, so I had to make a decision. After looking at the SB3, and the 400, and 1000 - I ended up going with another SB2. Partly because of the case I already own for it, but feature-wise, I couldn't see any real benefit to changing. Whichever one you pick, they are all solid choices.

    I'm gonna be honest man... It doesn't have the best profile, I really wish those jogs were aluminum and thinner, larger. I hate the small headphone jack. I was just about to purchase a Reloop Beatmix 4. Because of it's better build profile that is critical for light and slim travelling. I am rather more experienced now so I'm very picky. BUT YOU KNOW WHAT ? I would be a damn fool not to buy this controller. It packs every killer effect and those pads reach the sky in terms on features. I HAVE, to buy this controller. Not because I want to. But because it is the right thing to do and that's a killer sales philosophy they built right there. You just can't pass on it. Thanks for the review my guy.

    The fader issue could perhaps be fixed by MIDI mapping and set the range differently so the fader would not need to be right to the bottom to be at 0.

    10:50 for rekordbox if you want scratching to sound better I think you gotta go to settings; controller; then mixer self tab; go to cross fader curve and crank it up all the way to the right

    Interesting point at 17:00 , I get that too on VirtualDJ (scratching with a mouse) when I select WASAPI audio driver and it completely disappears when using asio4all with correct buffer size settings. I guess it's something to do with audio latency and how the software communicates with the drivers.

    I wanted to share my own views on the software comparison on the scratches. At least regarding higher speeds, on pitch or scratch, it's going to naturally create higher frequencies well above normal, probably even try out of our hearing range. IMO, it would make total sense to filter that out. I don't technically see it doing any damage to audio equipment, but it can create undesired harmonics, so filtering would be something I would have added into the software. (FYI those harmonics can clip compressors and limiters causing your volume to dip in an undesired way, so VERY smart idea.)Back in the old days on vinyl, speeding up would cause both speed and pitch to go up, where as with digital today, you can just control one, the other, or both. If music is typically made well within 20hz to 20k, raising the speed or pitch, or both, could send you well out of that range. ♥

    • @priyonjoni
      @priyonjoni  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maryjane Eva Diamond actually, on vinyl, the limitations of the cartridge naturally filter the high frequencies during scratching.

    Still NO split cue on the headphones, which is a must-have, and is why I'll be replacing my Pioneer controller with a Denon. If you've ever played in a venue with no/bad DJ monitor, the ability to mix in the headphones is INVALUABLE. The Pioneer mixer I bought 20 YEARS AGO had split cue, why have they dropped this essential feature?!

    • @chrisroussell1468
      @chrisroussell1468 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does this mean i cant mix and play n listin with headphones on ?

    • @karimayoubi74
      @karimayoubi74 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@chrisroussell1468 you will need monitor speakers if you want to be able to hear the main mix/output in one ear and the track you are cueing up in your headphones in the other ear. You cannot have master in one ear in your headphones, and cue in the other. So, basicallly no, you can't mix with headphones on. Unless you're a wizard.

    • @chrisroussell1468

      @@karimayoubi74 what would you suggest for a different mixer with the split cue ?

    • @karimayoubi74
      @karimayoubi74 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisroussell1468 you want a mixer or a controller? For controllers, the Denon has split cue. If you're buying online, then make sure you check the specs & description carefully. Different controllers only work with certain software, and most that I looked at don't have split cue, which is nuts. And the Pioneer DJ SB2 that I bought ONLY works with Serato, which I didn't realise when I bought it!

      @@karimayoubi74 Well i want a controller so i can pratice mixing and make mixes like good ol days i had numark pro controller that had the split cue ! But i was thinking bout get this DDJ400 But are you recommending the sb2 or what about DDJ SB3 ?

  • @famitory
    @famitory 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    that weird wibbly sound you get when moving a controller platter really slowly is a result of how digital platters actually work. you've got an encoder that can only register a finite number of steps. normally the software will sort of smooth out these steps into a general "we're going this direction at this speed" but when you move slower than the smoothing algo can deal with, you start to hear each step as a jump forward.
    this isn't a problem exclusive to controllers either, DVS can have trouble at ultra low speeds (admittedly much lower than controllers, usually) if the bass response of the deck isn't great, as the tone part of the timecode can start to get attenuated.

    • @famitory
      @famitory 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      in theory, a controller where the slow speed stepping is more noticeable should actually be better for ultra-fast platter movement, since there's less averaging happening that might otherwise smooth out those fast changes.

    • @priyonjoni
      @priyonjoni  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      famitory not every jog wheel (not platter) behaves the same with different software as demonstrated in the video. We used the SB2’s same jog wheel, and the two different software behaved differently.
      The thing to take away is not simply “its digital that’s what happens”. Different software results in different sonic behavior due to its algorithm.
      That’s why I can do a blind test of someone scratching, and I can easily tell you which software they are using.

    • @famitory
      @famitory 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@priyonjoni yeah I agree. as I said, different interpolation windows, maybe taking multiple order moving averages, PID trickery, ECT.

    Too little for my hands, I need something with extra large jog wheels because of my hands can be creative scratching and mixing. I need to learn the techniques before I buy new DJ equipment. I am satisfied with my Gemini CDJ 700s and my Reloop RMX mixer and I does have a SL 2 that provides Serato Dj Software.
