    I remember going to that mall in 2001. By then it was already showing signs of it being dead.
    It was probably the last mall with three floors in Houston that wasn’t the Galleria.

    I remember coming to this mall way back in 2001 and its a huge shame that it was torn down (the CityCenter parking garages are the only remnants of the original mall still standing to this day). Thanks for preserving the memories for all of these people who have been wanting to see this mall again but can't go back to visit it. This video is the only way for us to go back and visit T&C Mall so we all really appreciate the time you took to upload this. We often do not think about recording videos or taking pictures of what we feel are everyday places at the time, but when such everyday places face the wrecking ball then we start to wish we had taken pictures. We don't realize how great something is until its gone. RIP T&C Mall (1983-2004), 36 years later many of us still remember you!

    When the mall was first built it had no elevators. Only escalators and stairs. The elevators were a later addition. I remember they were installed right around the time Star Trek 4: The Voyage Home was about to hit theaters. For the elevator dedication ceremony, they brought in James Doohan (Scottie.) After the ceremony, he stayed for a little while to greet fans and sign autographs. My dad, sister, and I were in line to get an autograph. We were literally the next people to go in and get an autograph but they closed to rope right in front of us. Grrrr, so close.

    I remember seeing this mall getting built! Beltway 8 was a 4 lane road called Westbelt. I grew up shopping at this mall...we lived in Katy. T & C was fabulous! I remember Tilt the arcade on the third floor and the movie theater close by too. The McDonalds on the third floor was the first McDonalds I remember seeing in a mall at that time. My favorite store was 5,7,9 and Joskies which changed to Dillards later on. I wondered how Memorial City was going to survive with the new 3 story mall so close by. Well ironically Memorial City survived.

    • @christiangonzales7429
      @christiangonzales7429 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Memorial City survived because it outpaced Town and Country. The only restaurant I remember at T&C was an Arby's that had a small dining room in it but don't remember what floor it was. This mall was designed to fail due it to it being on a corner that was hard to access, obscured by the I-10/Beltway 8 interchange and the buildings in front, and the cherry on top being how close it was to another major mall.

    I remember this mall. It was the Fall Of 1997 when my mom had bought something from one of those stores. She tried it on She did not like it so we had to take it back right after we left church. This was before they had to expand I-10 and the The Beltway.

    • @christiangonzales7429
      @christiangonzales7429 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Because I-10 and BW8 is the intersection of 2 major freeways, it pretty much obscured the mall. It was hard to see it unless you were looking for it yet Memorial City was easy to spot right after passing BW8 going east. Obscurity and difficulty accessing the mall due to the interchange is what killed this mall, and Memorial City being nearby and easy to get to certainly didn't help matters.

    Thanks for sharing this. I actually was in there on the very last day of operation. We hadn't planned on it as such, but decided to stop in. I saw the sign on the entrance and was pretty surprised, but excited about what would be inside. Outside of the department store that stuck around for a while afterwards, there was exactly ONE store in the mall that was open - a nail salon near the entrance. There were probably another half dozen stores that were still occupied but closed... The rest was wide open. In fact, many of the gates were actually open, so I was able to roam around inside many empty stores and a vacated eatery or two.... Very creepy and fun. That day, a mild interest in this topic, became a significant one.

    I remember visiting this mall when it was built in the 1980s. The location was adjacent to a retail complex that existed long before (we just called it Town and Country), which had included department and apparel stores, two theaters, a bookstore, furniture stores, fine jewelers, ice skating rink (later flea market), and various restaurants. Basically, I viewed the mall as an effort to take that "outdated," open air shopping concept and move it all indoors. But this indoor mall had no theaters, no skating rink, no fine dining that I can think of, or really any central focal point at all... just a couple of anchors... and a food court that seemingly failed overnight. I have no recollection whatsoever of any third floor retail. The second level was the next to go, probably around the time JCPenney gave up. The conventional wisdom is that the rebirth of Memorial City, competition from West Oaks, and the construction of Beltway 8 were just too much for the mall to survive. But really, I just think it was poor design to begin with. Ironically, the older open air retail concept seems to have survived in some form... what's old is new again!

      @@thagrintch It was hard to access as the large interchange from I-10 and BW8 covered it up, plus unless if you were exiting to the BW8 feeder and/or looking for the mall you would never see it. Plus being close to the extremely accessible Memorial City nearby also hurt T&C further. This mall could have been saved if the owners put more effort into marketing as well as bringing in more tenants. If West Oaks could survive their decline (today, it looks a lot like how T&C did during its decline) then T&C could have made it. I always thought it was crazy that T&C was built so close to another major mall that wasn't even a mile away. What were they thinking when they built T&C?

      The Galleria, First Colony and Memorial City are the only major successful malls serving the West/SW areas of town. Because West Oaks has been dead for years, I don't even consider it to be a major mall anymore. The Alief area itself pretty much does not have a mall anymore and the closest mall to that area is First Colony. Back in the 90s, Alief's malls were West Oaks and Westwood with Sharpstown being nearby.

      People still like to shop in cool A/C and actually purchase items they don't have to wait for mail service. If you need to try things on it's a pain with wait wait for mail if you even ever get your item off your porch before getting stolen.

      Christian Gonzales it’s because the demographics changed and online shopping is the new fad. Alief is not once it was use to be where there were mid income level families now middle income family don’t exist no more it’s either higher bracket or low.

      @@Bnguyen276 I agree with you 100%. I still live in Alief (Mission Bend to be exact) and I own a small business marketing company out here, so I am always doing my research on audience. Online shopping is a huge fad that will probably never die and Alief continues to grow in size as the more rural areas (such as where Mission Bend begins to fade out into the Richmond/Clodine areas) are facing urbanization. The newer neighborhoods certainly target higher income families.

      Christian Gonzales yup earth isn’t getting any larger while population is growing. Few more generations we,re gonna out grow the planet just matter of time. Hunger gonna be a big issue in the future. Not enough to feed the growing population. I see food gonna sky rocket in prices and a lot more people home growing food in their backyard saving them cost at the stores. Fishermen shrimpers farmers cattle ranches are gonna get paid. Since man was created farming fishing and hunting always been part of our life and never will change.

      It was 3 stories tall and maybe had 75 to 100 stores when fully occupied. There were at least very large 2 anchor stores.

      Tiny footprint, yes. But, It felt vertically big on the inside due to being 3 floors.

      @ken444444 there were 4 anchor stores. There was Joskes, JC Penney, Marshall Fields and Nieman Marcus. This was around 1988 but I don't remember how long each of them lasted before they closed their doors. It was a great mall. Very clean and safe.
