I was part of the Nordstrom store opening team in 1995 when the entire mall opened. Nordstrom at The Westchester was the first Nordstrom store to open in New York state, and many of the managers, including myself, were moved from New Jersey Nordstrom stores to The Westchester. Additionally, some store staff were relocated from New Jersey to White Plains.
When the Nordstrom store opened in 1995, it featured three restaurants: The Pub, The Garden Court, and the Cafe, along with an espresso bar at the entrance on the ground floor. The store also boasted a pianist playing a grand piano and a concierge service. I worked at the store until 1997, after which I moved to Europe.
When I visited the store several years later, I noticed that the concierge, pianist, The Pub, and The Garden Court restaurants had all been removed. Many departments had been consolidated, making the store smaller. Similar changes were made in all the New Jersey stores. For example, at Nordstrom Menlo Park, they closed an entire floor to save space.

There's always been a lot of security at this mall compared to the others nearby, but I've noticed there's been significantly more security since there was a robbery at the Louis Vuitton store last year. Immediately after the robbery there would be up to 9 security guards at a time right in front of LV and Gucci

I didn't know about the robbery. That would make sense for them to have more security for that reason.

They did a bunch of dash and grabs and it was all over the news. Store clerks were screaming for help and they rightfully upped security since then. Luckily it’s not like manhattan where they just let it go on

I lived in NY in 1996 and I remember that only the superrich went to Westchester Mall, like families who can afford one, two Au Pairs. It was very acceptable for those families to even let their children gothere by themselves since there has always been lots of security.

Neiman marcus was once a stand alone store and they built the mall around it. this mall always had alot of security. weekdays are low traffic days. the food court use to be nice but it sucks now

I’ve been here MANY times. Was extremely high end but haven’t visited the last 5 years but jammed back in the day, nothing like this clip. Neiman Marcus and Nordstrom were the anchors plus a huge FAO Schwartz on the far end. Yes lots of security to keep out the Riff Raff, never ever felt threatened here in any way. BTW looks as if most of the pricey shops have left, you would not find a Bath & Body there back in the day. Saks 5th Avenue was across the street from Neiman for years, they were originals pre Mall time.

    Spent over 25 years working in Malls and yes being a Thursday afternoon at 1pm that would be considered normal and the mall is big so that would be another consideration. I worked at Tysons Corner Center (not the newer one) back in the 90s and there would be days like, even that Mall was busy almost all of the time. Since it is a high end mall so the amount of security may be due to the rash of grab and runs that have been occurring;

  • @tuneman7688
    @tuneman7688 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I wouldn't consider this a dying mall by any means. The anchor stores are still intact, very few vacant storefronts in general and they get a bunch of traffic during weekends and after working hours. What you're seeing here is typical for a work day.
Some of the stores from the closed neighboring Galleria mall such as Foot Locker and Forever 21 have migrated to this mall as well; I'm sure there will be more to follow. Sometimes it pays off to be the last mall standing in the area..
Also as someone mentioned, there was a well known LV robbery that happened here last year that went viral as it was all recorded by a bystander and posted online. Hence the added security everywhere.

I was a teenager when it first opened. I have't been in so many years but it used to be packed on weekends. They had an Anthropology next to the Disney store upstairs. They had a Zara across from the Sephora when it first opened but then that closed quickly. The lower level was where all the high end designer stores were. They had a Tiffany's, a Versace, and a few other's I can't remember. Oh- and a Jose Eber salon next to the Neiman Marcus.

  • @thahman187

it's real simple why there isn't a big crowd: most people are working throughout the day. it's probably better on Fridays and the weekends, but it's also expensive running a business there. They overhauled the Food Court and The Shake Shack is the only place worth going to and one other place whose name I forgot. As someone who works in the area, there aren't a lot of options.

Also, last year there was a big robbery so that would be the reason for the increase. 1pm on a thursday makes sense for the ammount of people. There also used to be a Warner Bros store and a Disney Store. But a lot of the stores are so high end that your average person isn't there a lot, and also you wouldn't be going into Tiffany and Co. every weekend lol. I know someone who works here and from what I've been told, there is a lot of scamming and shoplifting going on even with the enhanced security. One particular retail store that I know of is losing thousands a month on retail scams (exchanges, stuff bought online and being returned for credits-dont know exactly the how that works but the person assured me they are losing $$$). Seems like an epidemic in the NY area right now and when has to wonder how long the high end retailers will deal with it before they just close shop. Galleria had a security issue and they are done. Hope this doesn't happen to the Westchester Mall as its generally a nice place to shop

A lot of stores are constantly opening and closing in this mall, probably due to the low traffic. I’m actually surprised it’s survived as long as it has……as for the increased security, I just learned that there were a couple of robberies last year…..

GREAT VIDEO!! I started going to this mall soon after it opened. This mall was PACKED every weekend. When it first opened it took a while to find a park and get in. The anchors were always Neiman and Nordstrom. However, the food court was MUCH different back then. More choices. They even had a Nathans at one point. There was a City Limits Diner on the third level next to Neiman Marcus. There was a Warner Brothers Store near the Crate and Barrel end of the mall. The mall went through a mini renovation around the 2000s. They had carpeting through part of the mall if you could believe that. There was also a Discovery Store, a Brookstone Store, a book store, and a Disney Store.

The mall in Bay plaza is an outdoor strip style mall that had a JC Penny in one corner of the property which they full on built an indoor mall around said JCP. Probably one of the few JCP I know that are still in business especially as an anchor for the mall. Being in Coop city there's always a lot of people in the mall. It's a newer mall but I can tell already there's been some closings; the anchor stores have been hanging in there but I can imagine JCP is basically on borrowed time; if that closes hard to say how that will impact the rest of the stores there.

When Neimans was a Bergdorf Goodman store many people referred to it as a "return store". Not sure if true, but a juicy tidbit.

The anchor store is Neiman Marcus. I don't know if it's still there but before the mall opened, that was all the buzz. Then the Disney Store was the next big thing. Residents were kind of confused because at the time we would have three malls. Where they built it is definitely by design, right off 287 and Westchester Avenue.
Since I grew up in the area before during and after the mall was built, I don't recall any major history. That part of town was dead.
It was popular to go to but most people went to the soon to be decommissioned Galleria.
We always knew The Westchester was a high end mall so I can't say us teens at the time preferred to go there.

The high security presence is due to snatch & grab type shoplifting in the higher end shops. The mall itself is relatively safe. And for the day of week and time of day, this is pretty typical, tho it might be lighter than a typical day.
Given that the White Plains Mall was demolished & The Galleria is going under construction soon, The Westchester is the last mall in White Plains.
Additionally there are high rise office buildings adjacent to the mall, and the county courts & other government offices are nearby, this mall does get quite a bit of foot traffic.

Based on vacancies and the store mix it does not look to be a declining mall. It wasn't busy both because you were there at a very slow time of day and high-end stores don't get or need the foot traffic of more reasonably priced ones.
Separately, the story of the New York Westchester & Boston RR is something else again. A spare-no-expense commuter railroad that lasted less than 30 years, done in by the lack of a Manhattan terminal. Part of it survives as the Dyre Avenue subway line.

I agree that there weren't many vacancies, but there weren't many people either. I've never seen it on a Friday or Saturday, so I can't say if it's usually busier than this. However, if this the normal number of people in the mall, it doesn't seem to be doing very well. That's just my opinion though.

To give a different POV, malls with more high-end stores don't need to be bustling 24/7 to maintain their value. Some of these stores need only a few sales per day for the owners to keep their space in the mall. Also, I recall this mall having one or two grab and runs in the last year or so-could explain beefed up security.

Trying to leave from the claustrophobic parking garage that is not free has always been awful. If I may make a request; would you be able to include the weather conditions and temperature in addition to the day and time of the video? It may or may not be a contributing factor to mall foot traffic. Thank you.

What this mall lacks is entertainment. No movie theater or “fun things to do”
Dining options suck, no affordable options when it comes to food.
Mainly just window shoppers and returns
They don’t have enough room to add larger stores such as zara or h&m. You can see the forever 21 (new) is much smaller than normal ones, and it’s just womens.
This mall catered to the wealthy at one point but needs to shift its target clientele. And add more of a mixed shopping/dining/entertainment.

The mall is doing well. Stop being so negative. If you went on a Saturday, you’d see normal shopping patterns and droves of people. Considering the sad state of affairs with prices, the mall is holding its own with high-end luxury brands and people still want the tactile experience of shopping in person. The security has been there since 1995 when I was a part of the opening team at Pottery Barn. It’s still a beautiful mall and it’s not going anywhere as long as people realize that shopping online for clothing and luxury products doesn’t offer the same type of experience.
