  • Larry Potterfield, Founder and CEO of MidwayUSA, presents the Winchester Model 1892 Saddle Ring Carbine in this GunTec presentation. This short, handy lever action was chambered for the popular Winchester Center Fire line on handgun ammunition. The specific gun used in this video featured a straight grip along with a 20 inch barrel. It has an 11 round magazine and is chambered in 32-20. Production of the model 1892 ran from 1892 to 1932 with over a million guns produced.

Everybody ought to own a lever gun, just as everybody ought to own a cylinder gun. In this day and age of ARs, AKs and other superb automatic rifles, sometimes it's worth taking a step back in time and enjoying the little things, like a slick lever action and beautifully stained furniture.

Chuck Connors used a large loop lever action Winchester Model 1892 on the TV series, The Rifleman. The lever was modified with a screw (bolt) so Connors would not pinch his finger when doing the rapid-fire scenes. Although the Winchester "Model 92" was not produced until 1892, the TV series was supposed to take place in 1890.
The Winchester "Model 92" was also John Wayne's favorite rifle, and he used a large loop version is several of his movies.

Why did it switch to the 1894 saddle ring carbine when he was unloading it ?

James Ross. Your absolutely correct, What a blunder. Mayby the 92 jambed up cycling action to quick! Well spotted.

Good catch. Probably an editing error. I’m sure they shot several Winchester’s that day.

@@lonniegamble4292 hey maybe you can elighten me. i have a 92 and the other dday i noticed that when you put it on a half cocked position it keeps the hammer away from the firing pin.. naturally. But i found that in that position it turns into a double action... i mean if you were to squeeze the trigger hard enough the hammer full cocks and drops like any regular double action.. of course it is not a light trigger pull but still, i thought it wasn't supposed to be able to shoot at all.. could you tell me if thats normal?

@@lonniegamble4292 I slowed the speed down to 0.25 and could barely see that James Ross was right. Using a device tool I then slowed down to 0.1 normal speed which messes up the quality but you can see the 1984 style drop. Mr Potterfield sure did load an 1892 but what then happened with the filming???? I'm impressed he was that quick with the 1894 and would love to see him run the even slicker 1892.

Also after the unloading you can see a eye to attach a sling on the barrel band. You have a fine eye for details!!

Iv got a handed down 1892 saddle ring serial no2867 looked it up was made in 1892 first year run.20 " barrel looked exactly like the one on the video, except for the rear sight,.the condition i would consider fair to good.have any idea what it might be worth? Oh yeah it's a .32 cal

I have the winchester 25 20 WCF patented October 14 1884 it looks to be exactly like the one in the video with the saddle ring, the ladder slide type sight and a rear up and down peep sight behind the hammer so with that being said it has 3 sights in all and the rear sight I guess was an add on. I had it appraised in 2015 and it was worth around $2000.00 if this helps you out

That's 11 cartridges in the magazine tube? Is that standard for a Model 92 Carbine? And if it was 44-40 it would still be 11 as the cartridges are the exact same overall length, right? [Why does everyone think it's 10 for the 32-20 and 44-40?

While we hunted deer in Maine many years ago I could of bought a 92' Winchester in 38 40. I wanted one in 44 40 so I passed it. Dumb I guess, but it was only in fair shape.

Regrettably, I sold my 44 WCF 1892 35 years ago. It had the name EMGE crudely engraved in the buttstock. I would love to get it back but would settle for another nice, early 20th century 1892 in good condition. PM me with any information. Thank you.
