1997 anime focuses on the important character moments, and the Golden Age movies (usually) just look really good. Neither is perfect so it's your choice, really. Though the movies are getting rereleased as an anime and it seems they're getting the missing scenes added, so who knows, maybe it'll be better than the '97 anime when that happens.
