9th Gen Impala Audio Upgrades Part 1: ATOTO F7 Pro 10 Inch Headunit

  • This is the start of a series of audio upgrades that I will be performing to my 2012 9th Gen Impala. First up, I install the $220 ATOTO F7 Pro Edition headunit with a MASSIVE 10" floating display. To install this unit into the 9th Gen Impala and get it to function properly there are some additional accessories that need to be purchased.
    Playlist for MyLink radio installation:
    • 2006-2016 Impala/Limit...
    Here is the link to the ATOTO F7 Pro:
    www.amazon.com...
    First up is an install kit to properly fit it into the Impala's dash. There are several different brands you can choose from. The one I went with was the "Best Kit BKGMK318 Double DIN Installation Dash Kit for 2006-2013 Chevrolet Vehicles" www.amazon.com...
    Next up is the PAC RP5-GM31 www.amazon.com...
    This will allow you to retain OnStar, warning chimes, steering wheel controls (kinda,) and allows you to properly power the headunit.
    I also purchased the matching backup camera. www.amazon.com...
    I did so because my old camera was not capable of being activated by the ATOTO headunit (it was possible to trigger it manually when in reverse, but it would not trigger on its own by shifting into reverse.) The ATOTO camera is able to be triggered at any time, and you can use it while you're in motion. When you trigger it going down the highway, the gridlines do not show up.
    I also purchased a SiriusXM tuner, which is (theoretically) compatible with this headunit. I had some trouble getting the SXM tuner to work with the headunit, so I have done away with it for the time being. www.amazon.com...
    You'll also see that I added in a different external microphone than the one provided. www.amazon.com...
    I went back and forth with ATOTO customer service in regards to the SXM tuner and getting the steering wheel controls to work using the PAC RP5-GM31. I eschewed what they told me and both plugged in the 3.5mm SWC jack and connected the blue wire from the RP5-GM31 to the Key1 wire. This is the only way to get the SWC's to get a response from the A7. I was only able to program 3 separate functions, so I programmed Volume Up, Volume Down, and Camera Trigger. I programmed the "Source" and "Next Track" keys to handle the volume, and the 5 remaining keys all trigger the camera.
    So as you can see, this radio has some trade-offs. Considering this unit was merely $220, I don't have much to complain about. The Android Auto works just as well as it does on my wife's 2016 Cruze (every so often it crashes and reboots the stereo, but I place the blame squarely on AA and not the headunit.) I absolutely LOVE Android Auto and HAD to have it in my car, so that was my main impetus for purchasing this headunit. The MyLink radio was serving my needs just fine, it was just a shame that it would've cost $550 to purchase a module to add Android Auto (and at that, it would only be on a 6.2" screen.)
    Thanks for watching! Any questions or comments, please post below. If you found this informative or helpful in any way, give a the video a thumbs up! Be sure to check out my other videos, hit the subscribe button, and ring the bell to be notified of new videos!

    Think you need to reset PAC controller. Activate it then hold the steering wheel functions THEN touch Atoto SWC screen functions. I think I may have been doing it backwards. TH-cam video on AAMP Globals channel dated may 8 2020 shows how to map SWC to Atoto. Also think the 3.5mm jack works best which is same as using both sw wires together.

      @@randymartinez8631 No, the video referenced above was no help at all. The best I could get was what I showed at the end of the video. I'm considering trying an iDatalink Maestro module instead of the RP5-GM31, which will be beneficial when I finally save up for a Pioneer with the 10" screen (whether or not it works with the ATOTO is a whole other story.)

    Might not work for your year but I used the AXXESS ASWC-1 steering wheel controler for my 2000 GMC Sierra that I installed radio controls from a 2002 Escalade (Denali has same ones) and I used the female headphone style jack to two wires then connected to the two wheel control wires on the JVC head unit in truck, I then just had to hold a button on the ASWC-1 till a red light blinked and press the wheel buttons for a few seconds then repeat for each button, it came with a list and order to program by, any button can do whatever you want. It worked perfectly. I later did a friends 99 Silverado with same controller and steering wheel controls with the stock head unit and just hooked up one wire and same programming steps and it also works perfect. You might just need the ASWC-1. Goog luck, I want that F7 Pro now, lol.

    I installed a pioneer Avid-8500nex radio in a 2004 suburban and had the same problem with the oem XM tuner working with the control module and did the same thing you did with buying an aftermarket XM tuner and had no issues, infact it was the same one you installed.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, I suspect it's something internal with the ATOTO, not the SXM tuner. I've installed a few of those tuners in the past and they've always worked 100%..

    You have to program the RP5 to let in know what buttons do what on your steering wheel, it is receiving the signal already but just program it and it should solve your steering wheel issue. There are some videos showing how to do this on TH-cam.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I tried to manually program the RP5, and that made it worse!! I ended up having to do a factory reset on the RP5 to at least get it back to something resembling normal.

    was going to buy one, all video's look good except yours, but having second thoughts, coming from Alpine w650, ,going to look at ilx 470 wich is the same as Alpine 650 with video and HDMI mirror link,650 is Mechless Media only.

      This is a big step down from an Alpine! But again, at this price point you have to ask yourself if you can live with the compromises that come with paying so little. All in all I decided I could live with them and have to say I'm still pretty happy with it.

      Yes, and everything I linked to in the description is what you need to get it to fit and function in the Impala. Except for the radio itself - this particular model has been discontinued. They now sell an F7 model that is single-DIN and has wireless AA & ACP. That and it's $50 more!!

    So i have a 2010 Chevy Impala and bought the atoto f7 WE. When i installed the new radio In it powered on and just stayed on a black screen. The car was fully on and running. All the wires were connected to there colors or names for the adaptor for the car connectors. I have changed the wire connectors to the cap ones and now the radio just powers up 10% of the time or less. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Did you use a PAC or Scosche module to connect it to the car? Have you tried bench testing the radio outside the car? You absolutely need a module like the RP5-GM31 in order for the aftermarket radio to function properly. If you in fact have one already, I say bench test the radio to rule the module out as the culprit. If you don't have a 12v power supply, you could wire it straight to the battery to test it..
