    This is a brilliant one Nick isn’t it- I found this myself a few months back.
    You asked what Jimmy may have found in this song to compel him to sing it…..I know you may have been meaning the ‘type’ of singing that the song would demand of him….but if we consider the lyrics and feeling of the song, it’s very very much a song that Jimmy could live and breath.
    I’m not sure if you enjoy reading or if you have the time, but I couldn’t strongly enough recommend you read Barnsey’s two autobiographical books ‘working class boy’, and ‘working class man’. They will give you a deep insight into the man and his journey- you’ll understand and appreciate Jimmy and his music even more than you already do!!👍🏻

    😮 Wow Barnsey is like a rock n roll preacher! I totally felt that and I’m not a massive Jimmy fan but I appreciate what a powerful soulful voice he has, he is a storyteller. Flame trees is probably my fave song of his.
    So great to see him do this song justice and to see his daughters singing backup and his brother in law. Mark Lizotte/Johnny Diesel doing a brilliant job. If you haven’t heard of him. Check out his music from his solo album and when he was Johnny Diesel and the Injectors.
    Thanks for bringing this song to our attention. 💜

  • @balthusT1
    @balthusT1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Nick - the guitarist playing/singing with Jimmy is Diesel (Mark Lizotte) who is Jimmy's Brother in Law (you've reacted to about 10 of his songs (solo/band/duets). Of special note is that Barnsey performed at the APRA Music Awards on short notice as Sia was unavailable and she was up for an award for Chandelier. And the song is very emotive for Jimmy - you asked why would he choose to sing this song - he is a recovering alcoholic (courtesy of his early free wheeling days with Chisel) and you can see in his performance just how much he sees himself in the lyrics, wiping away sweat and tears. I've enjoyed watching your journey with Chisel and Barnsey. You're an outsider discovering something wonderful - we Aussies grew up listening to these guys and we love them to death, and watching some of your reactions today mirror some of our reactions 40+ years ago.

    I first saw Jimmy live when I was 17, over 30 years ago - he was amazing then - a solo performer just coming out from being in front of Chisel. Little did any of us know how drugs and alcohol were ruling him back then.
    Since then he has overcome so much - grown musically and created so many amazing moments, songs, performances and albums. Rock, soul, acoustic, pop.
    I’m sitting here with tears having never seen this before - because this song tells his story of his early years and you can hear it in how he sings it. That’s why this performance is ridiculously good - he probably heard SIAs song and thought - yep, that was me. Wonderful human too.

    I LOVE THIS! Chandelier is an incredibly personal song to me because most people don't realise it's about alcohol addiction (Sia's been sober for many years now). Jimmy Barnes is the perfect artist to cover this song because he's also struggled a lot with addiction issues in his past. I dunno if you've covered it yet (only just discovered your channel) but you need to do 'Khe Sanh'. I used to HATE this song when I was younger because it was always played in pubs, but it's basically Australia's equivalent of 'Born in the USA'. It's the same theme, of Vietnam vets returning home and being alienated and cast off by the government and country they laid down their lives to fight for.

    It's pretty common knowledge Jimmy had a drinking problem. And this song was easily related to him back from those days. He assisted a homeless choir I was part of - The Choir of Hard Knocks - and shared a lot about his struggles to us as a lot of us had substance issues as well. He really was an amazing person and can't thank him or Jonathan Welch (ex-tenor of Opera Australia) for really helping start the choir.

He spent a lot of time talking, then some songs that influenced or meant something to him. It was truly amazing. So up close and personal. I was in tears. Whether you like James or not he has to be one of the hardest working singers in the world

    When I saw the title I couldn't imagine how he was going to do it, but that change in the arrangement was outstanding itself. 👏

    the common thread between Sia & Jimmy is they're both from Adelaide in South Australia. Sia couldn't make it to the awards so Jimmy did it on her behalf....bravo Sia & Jimmy.

    Many label companies found it too expensive to send their groups and singers touring. The airfares to the USA from Australia were huge! So that’s why many never really got a chance. So they made it big in Australia instead.This is why some of the super voices you play didn’t climb into your charts.

    Because to Sia this would have been one of the most exciting highlights in her career to have King JB singing one of her songs and owning it. 🙂 PS Oooooh and now I want to hear King JF singing that song 😉
