Out on the road with Britain's commercial vehicle crime fighters

  • Two years ago, Scene Scania carried its first report on the Central Motorway Police Group (CMPG) and its pioneering work of using trucks to catch law breakers. The logic was simple: Officers knew full well that some truck drivers flout the law -- other drivers regularly told them so -- but they were unable to do anything about it. From the officers' viewpoint, low down in a car, they just couldn't see what was going on inside of trucks. A higher vantage point was clearly needed...

    USA Traffic Enforcement and Highway Patrol Agencies throughout could certainly take heed.
    We have a massive problem, especially with Cellphone use whilst driving. That alone contributes to an enormous number of traffice fatalities each year.
    I'm sure we may find a number a of infractions liken to yours, as to truckers cooking and a several other ridiculous goings on. There must be such a fantastic view from the perspective of a Semi Tractotr's view.
    Thanks, interesting and informative.

      J lo yeah, but thats the police. Its ok. They are trained to multitask whilst driving. They can text their missus, be talking to their supervisor over the phone, be typing a suspects name into the computer, drink coffee and eat doughnuts all at the same time whilst driving and NOT crash . They are professionals. Meanwhile your average driver (you and i) would have a high probability of crashing if we lost concentration for quarter of a split second.

      Chris Kane you suggest what instead? How else will they see into the cab of another truck?

    • @ChristopherKaneTV
      @ChristopherKaneTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      HMSDaring1 I suggest they use a cab with lower headroom as this will be cheaper and more fuel efficient as they will not be carrying box trailers. Also, the midlift axle is unnecessary as they won’t need any trailers. Private plates, are they mad?!! Surely these money saving points (still no compromise, they will be able to do the same job, looking into cabs.) will be able to be put back into the service.

    • @HMSDaring1
      @HMSDaring1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think you missed the point where they said the lorry is leased. Not owned, but leased from Scania. Likely, Scania gave them one of the trucks that they had available. They are leasing the vehicle, probably for a year or so. The Metropolitan Police do the same, except the vehicles are usually 'donations' from the lorry companies.
      The way they get the lorry, is up to the dealer, not the police. It's not that CMPG went to Scania, hey can we have an R480 with dual rear axles, oh and a custom plate of 'E6ERG' which has no meaning whatsoever. That truck is probably a display or trial truck.
      Mid lift axle is unnecessary but they travel with it up as shown in the link below:
      c1.staticflickr.com/5/4078/4763825962_738bb9f227_b.jpg
      Also, the second truck they got was much simpler, Google for it and you'll see. And also, it only stayed in service for a year, if that. They are returned very soon after.
      It costs more money for the police, ambulance and fire service to respond to a HGV rear ending a stationary line of traffic (because driver was on phone) than it costs for them to operate a truck like this. Trust me on that. The expenses are FAR more vast when a HGV smashes into the back of a queue.

      @Sarge92 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @philiprhodes5537
      @philiprhodes5537 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      patgeorge1 seatbelts may save lives but do you not think it is the right of the individual to make a choice as to if or not they wish to use that option or not...or do you think it is a choice that the government take away from the individual..
      Point being that ppl are now just system controlled dummies we do as we are told when we are told and pay money for not doing so..
      Fact of the matter is that people rarely think for themselves these days you jump in the car and program the sat nav it instructs you where to go and when to turn left or right ect so you are being told by a machine what to do and when to do it and most ppl cant leave home without it either!!
      Same with the law you jump in the car and instead of making a decision about if or not you wish to use your seatbelt you do it anyway coz you know by not doing so will result in a tax being levied on you for non compliance thus the decsion regarding the seatbelt was not your ideal it was someone elses....fact is laws are passed thru parliment and made by a small miority of people but just coz they have the power to pass a law does not mean to say the law is an ideal for everyone and is only an ideology of the people who made and passed it thru parliment and usuallly laws involve money...surprise surprise eh so lets face it if you cant make descisions for yourself you shouldnt really be driving a pram let alone something with an engine

    • @patgeorge1
      @patgeorge1 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      in the UK seat belts are compulsory they save lives. one night in an intensive care unit costs £2000+. seeing the cost of health care is covered by our NHS it isn't up to individual choice. a road related death is said to cost the UK economy over £1,000,000! In the days before seat belts were fitted to cars I witnessed many fatal and serious injury road accidents or should I say the aftermath. when seat belts were fitted in vehicles my family always wore them, so it was sad to see the effects on non seat belt wearers who could have survived. Our government made the wearing of them compulsory, but there are those who think they know better!

    • @eddherring4972
      @eddherring4972 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      philip rhodes one day your life or the life of someone you care about might be saved by a seat belt. When that happens perhaps you will re-read your comment and realise how wide of the mark you are. We live in a world where financial penalties seem to be the only deterrent. That’s why people hate them and see them as money making schemes. I am about to start my LGV training, it’s something I wanted to do since I was old enough to know what a lorry is. I will do everything within my power to ensure that this will be my career. I want to be safe for myself and other road users. I don’t want my income and livelihood threatened by easily compilable directives and laws. It’s really quite simple. You seem to me to be the type of person who would not wear a hard hat in a hard hat area because you don’t want a sign telling you what to do, the reality might dawn on you that the sign was trying to save your life when it was too late and you skull was fractured by a falling object. Some people will only learn by experience and by that time it may just be game over.

      cbrboy76 it's also an offence to have the camera on the windscreen where it is. Quote from some legislation
      it is an offence, under regulation 30 of The Road Vehicles (Construction & Use) Regulations 1986 (SI 1986 No. 1078), to drive a vehicle in which the glass is maintained in such a condition that the vision of the driver is impaired.
      There has to be a 350 MM. verticals clearance centred on the steering wheel to the roof, and I bet that cameras within that area ,
      Link to the site I got the quote from webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20120606172834/http:/assets.dft.gov.uk/publications/dft-information-sheets/stickers-or-other-obscurations-in-front-and-rear-windscreens.pdf

      I'm a serving PC but I always belt up, both for public perception and that I don't want to go through the windscreen when we have to slam on the brakes when pursuing a vehicle.

    • @msmith7547
      @msmith7547 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not, they (police/ambulance & fire crews) are required to wear seat belts unless it hinders their duty / duties! So in everyday day to day duties they should by law be wearing the seatbelt

    • @thefiestaguy8831
      @thefiestaguy8831 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong i'm afraid.
      There's no legal requirement for police officers (100% for definite) to wear seatbelts, as I said previously, I'm a serving PC and ex special constable, you'd often see people I was on shift with not wearing belts, personally I always wore mine for safety, but also public perception.
      Seat belts: the law
      Overview
      When you don't need to wear a seat belt
      If your vehicle doesn’t have seat belts
      2. When you don't need to wear a seat belt
      You don’t need to wear a seat belt if you’re:
      a driver who is reversing, or supervising a learner driver who is reversing
      in a vehicle being used for police, fire and rescue services
      a passenger in a trade vehicle and you’re investigating a fault
      driving a goods vehicle on deliveries that is travelling no more than 50 metres between stops
      a licensed taxi driver who is ‘plying for hire’ or carrying passengers
      Taken from www.gov.uk/seat-belts-law/when-you-dont-need-to-wear-a-seat-belt
      This post covers exempting ambulance service employees, riding in motor vehicles used as ambulances from the seatbelt law.

    There is a certain minority of folk think that the Police, DVSA and other enforcement agencies are out to get them. If you drive legally there is not an issue. They are looking for drivers who are committing offences like using a mobile phone, drink/drug driving, overloading, vehicles in a poor condition, dangerous driving, driver hours etc. Life is a precious gift, but it can be so easily taken away, especially by someone driving a commercial vehicle.

    In what other job are you hounded by "management" to work above and beyond and in fear of being stopped by the authorities and face fines and potential prosecution ,on a daily basis ,and expected to keep up with endless regulations and put in very long , anti-social hours, with zero appreciation or respect fron ANYONE, and poor rest places, for very little financial reward? Welcome to the reality of being a HGV driver in the UK.
    And the goverment wonders why there is a shortage of 76000 drivers. They can count themselves lucky it isn't 176000; which won't be too long in the future.
    People should be clapping for us professional drivers, without whom the economy would collapse in three days.
    Goverment will have to face the reality , soon.

    To be honest, when you're driving a speed-restricted vehicle for miles on end, you actually need to do something to distract you otherwise you just switch off.
    I've had plenty of journeys were entire chunks of time go missing. Although I must be on some kind of autopilot (technically a hypnotic state) and am not found anything dangerous or driving erratically, I do worry that I've day I'll completely switch off and even fall asleep.

      @@paulcowen8425 Nothing has indicated that it's something that will happen, I just worry that it could since it has happened to other people, albeit different circumstances in that they were driving while overtired, although I've driven hundreds of miles having not slept at all for over 24 hours and not come close to falling asleep at the wheel.
      Basically, it's obviously possible to fall asleep at the wheel, but I don't understand how it's possible since I've never been close despite having driven long distances in some terrible states.

    There will always be people who don’t like the idea of the Police using unmarked Trucks, to keep an eye on them, but there have been too many fatalities because a HGV Driver was using their phone while driving a killing machine potentially!
    The Police & VOSA are doing a very important job to protect the public from potentially dangerous drivers! You just can’t afford not to give your full attention to your driving and other road users, whatever the vehicle!
