  • This is my first Skeptic Sunday video and I decided to go with a church I have been curious about for many years! I enjoyed my time and would love to go to another service, perhaps at a different location.
If you agree (or disagree) with anything mentioned in the video, please let me know below! This is purely for educational purposes (myself included) and I am so excited to be a part of the conversation!
Also, please let me know which religious service I should attend next :)

    NOTES:
    - When I referred to the "sermon" being an hour long, I was referring to the entire Mass or service as a whole. I may have misspoke. Coming from a Baptist background, often "service" and "sermon" are used interchangeably. I appreciate the added context from the comments.
    - I did not take communion.
    - This was my first video and testing the waters. I do plan to attend another Mass and will make a more encompassing video then with my further understanding.
    - Thank you everyone for the support!

@SimplySkeptical22 I really, really love this video. Thank you for your perspective. If there is a Byzantine Catholic Church near you that service is also very beautiful. Much, much different than Western/Roman Catholic, but gorgeous.

I did assume you confused your terms, but there can be long homilies. For our wedding Mass the priest went almost 30 minutes long just with the homily which caused the following Mass start late 😂
Interesting to know you have a Protestant background. Keep searching! It'd be cool to see you compare a Mass that celebrates in Latin, it's even more structured, and if it's the High Mass it has full chanting and incense.

Please try and find a Traditional Latin Mass which will give you a more historical overview.. the TLM is like the flesh on the bones of the New Mass (novus ordo). Vatican II stripped away a lot of the prayers etc and it’s a debate that continues today. I am a retired priest so if you would like to ask anything go ahead. Equally I am happy to add comments if they are helpful.

Novos Ordo (New Order, said in local language) is the best way to introduce yourself to the Catholic Mass. There are 2 parts: known as the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The first liturgy is readings from the Old and New Testaments. The second liturgy is reenacting the Last Supper and communion. These 2 liturgies are traditions dating back to Early Church Fathers and the Apostles, when the Church was in hiding and under persecution. There were no Mega churches, big screens, bands, choirs, or cathedrals. They just went to each other's houses, read, prayed, and broke bread. Forgot. Only 1 person read. Not everyone was literate.
I say Novos Ordo is the "best" only because you can understand all the words being said or sung and you have a chance to participate if you can read from a missalette (the books normally in all the benches are portions of the yearly Missal, which has all the readings scheduled for Sunday Mass.) The missalette has instructions on when to stand, sit, or kneel.
I would recommend you watch videos of the Latin Mass (high or low) or the Byzantine Mass before attending in person if you are trying to participate. You will at least not be shocked and know what's happening if you prepare yourself. Otherwise, there will be too much going on at the same time. If you attend a Latin Mass, and try to "participate" in Latin, your nose will be stuck in the book going back and forth from the Latin to the English translation. You will miss seeing what's going on. Similar experience in Byzantine rite, except it's in Greek. Your attendance will be primarily as a witness if you are not prepared. Plus your pronunciation of the words will be off. That's how it was for me the first couple times, anyway.
But, yeah. Somehow it's more special and more reverent to celebrate Latin Mass compared to Novos Ordo Mass. As you noted, I have seen people wearing soccer uniforms or shorts and tank tops at Novos Ordo Mass. People get dressed up to attend Latin Mass, in my experience. Many of the women tend to wear veils. Even receiving the Eucharist is more reverent because we kneel at the communion rail and receive the Eucharist on the tongue instead of in the hand.
Good luck on your journey. I'll pray for you and anyone reading this comment.
      😉

I was born a Chaldean Catholic in the Middle East, and when I came to the West a few decades ago, I assumed all Christians worshipped as I did (as we were deeply isolated from the rest of the world, largely because of Saddam Hussein, who was ruling my country at the time.) I didn’t realize there were people who didn’t know Mary or didn’t celebrate the Eucharist! When a friend invited me to an evangelical church for the first time, I was in shock. There were no signs of the cross, no statues or sacred images, no communion, and no one kneeling. The people seemed full of passion for the Lord, which was nice, but I didn’t feel the Lord’s presence.
At the end of the service, my friend asked what I thought. I told her, honestly, it felt more like a Bible study with added enthusiasm than a sacred experience. I didn’t sense any holiness or sacredness in it. I think she was offended by my response-perhaps she was trying to convert me, though I wasn’t aware of it at the time. I was simply being honest. Deep down, I left feeling empty, as though I had only experienced some Bible reading that I could have done at home.
P.S. The Chaldeans were evangelized by St. Thomas the Apostle and his disciples, who were among the early fathers of the Church.

I had to leave a position with a nonprofit here in Texas because I was the only Catholic among a bunch of evangelical baptists. The loud singing and throwing their arms in the air was theatrical. We would pray every morning and it would ALWAYS start out with praying for a certain politician, then trying to insult all the communities they deemed ungodly. Never again.

Roman Catholics follow a standardized set of readings, but there can be minor variations from diocese to diocese and among religious orders. The readings for Sunday Mass are based on a three-year cycle (A, B, and C), with each year focusing on different sections of the Bible. This means that the readings for a particular Sunday will be the same for all Roman Catholics globally in a given year, but they will differ between years A, B, and C. We began Year C this Advent season (2024). Once we arrive at Advent 2025, we will begin Year A.

So there are several Rites under the Pope that are not Roman. I am a Maronite Catholic. But we won't even get into that because we don't even have the same calendar year, the same holy days of obligation, no advent Advent at all and no ordinary time. Parts of the Mass are spoken in Syriac or Aramaic! And our children receive baptism first communion and confirmation as infants. Still have apostolic succession though! And is considered still in line with the Roman Catholic Church 😂😂😂

Catholics don't go to Mass to "get" something. We attend Mass to take part in--to give of ourselves in the re-presentation of the passion and crucifixion of Jesus, and the sacrifice of Him to the Father.
Protestant services seem to be more of a Bible study with a stage show.
I'm glad you felt welcomed and that it was a good experience for you.
I would strongly urge you to consider taking part in the OCIA (formerly RCIA) classes at any Catholic parish. There is no commitment to become Catholic, and it is a great way to actually learn what it means and takes to be Catholic.

I'm a former Protestant, and a Catholic convert. Not all Protestant churches put on a stage show at their Sunday services. Some still have the classic hymns, sung by the congregation, with just a piano or organ, for the music. Some also still have strong Christian preaching that isn't watered down, like too many churches today. To be clear, I'm glad that I became a Catholic, because I do believe that the Catholic Church is the Church that Christ founded, with continuing apostolic succession to this day, but I just wanted to mention that there are still Protestant churches that have more traditional services, and that still have strong preaching that is focused on Christ, and seeking to live a holy life, as a Christian.

I grew up in the Catholic faith but didn't know it well, sadly. For a big part of my life, I felt like you, not understanding the mass. My family didn't go every week either and when we went, it was boring for me.
However, once I started to look for God and learn about my faith, it was life changing! Once I understood the meaning of the mass and the significance behind every action (why we stand, sit or kneel, why the priest my open his hands or close them; why only a drop pf water is put into the wine, etc...) and that Jesus is really present in his Body, Soul and Divinity by the transubstantiation...wow! Mass became so real and special that it felt like it was only 15 minutes. I can no longer go without Sunday mass. It is my oasis and strength.
The Eucharist is the center and and most important part of the Catholic faith. We are required to go on Sundays and encouraged to go more often, if able. We are never required to donate a certain amount of money but encouraged to support our church however and how much we are able.
I also appreciate that when we are not able to receive Jesus in communion (yes, Catholics in state of mortal sin should not receive) we can still receive a blessing.
Thank you for this video and thank you for your effort to learn and know that if you are not Catholic you should not take communion.

I speak the truth with what I tell you. Oct 9, I was healed at “Our Lady of Champion,” Shrine the only approved Apparition site of our Blessed Virgin Mary in USA. I was healed from disabling ailment I suffered with for 13 years and excruciating pain from 2016 incident.
I speak not just from our Lady but from God the Father, the Son, & the Holy Spirit. Catholics must see the truth about Nationalism. The prophesies of Marie Julie Jahenny stating: the “horrible religion,” that “many many Bishops embrace,” is not the Novus Ordo Missae aka The New Mass from Vatican 2 that many accepted as such. This false acceptance had a ripple effect through our Church and caused much division and damage to Catholicism throughout the world! The true “horrible religion that “many many Bishops embraced,” is the communist backed Nationalism Movement! In USA it is known as Christian Nationalism and they play a huge role politically with this new party that took over our Republican party in real-time.
MAGA’s goal is to dismantle the Constitutional Federal Republic Government of America! To rebuild a government for the needs of this incoming administration and their global multi corporate interests.
Christian Nationalists hijacked the Christian name-they are a guise for white supremacy! In America the Nationalist Movement aka “Christian Nationalism,” has one goal-Dismantle Christianity & replace it with Nationalism, (aka Hate). The billionaire backed MAGA along with Nationalism work hand in hand, why Republicans and Democrats must work hand in hand to dismantle them-or America is no longer and religion will no longer exist, exactly what this communist backed, billionaire, private sector, “venture capitalist,” “rogue”government wants, because they strive to dismantle the global system to bring in the NEW WORLD ORDER & lawlessness, so that they can use their reverse engineered “alien technology,” against the people of the world, to have TOTAL CONTROL. This is the work of the EVIL ONE and the LEFT & the RIGHT AND ALL PEOPLE AGAINST the NEW WORLD ORDER MUST WORK TOGETHER!
Nationalists teach hate, racism, and they fear diversity-everything that is the integral measures of the Catholic Church! The diverse congregation of all creeds, race, colors, converts of all religions from all nations is the Christian congregation-the body of Jesus Christ.
These Nationalists will gather Christians of the 7 main denominations & Catholics up along with Gays, Jews, Blacks-all marginalized groups and persecute us! Please know I speak the truth!

Peace be with you, friend. I converted to Catholicism after 25 years of atheism following a series of events and experiences that told me there was more to existence than meets the eye. It's one of the best decisions I ever made and would encourage anyone to consider visiting their local Catholic church, attending Sunday Mass, and speaking with the priest if they're interested. There is a process if you convert as an adult (RCIA/OCIA) but it's quite easygoing.

  • @ereinei

Sounds like you had a good experience!
The Sunday readings are on a 3 year schedule. Year A,B, and C. The Gospel of Matthew is read in year A, Mark in B, Luke in C, and John is interspersed in Lent, Easter, Advent, and Christmas as well as year B.
Daily Masses are on a two year cycle.
If you pray the liturgy of the hours, attend daily Mass, and Sunday Mass you will read about 90% of the whole Bible over 3 years.
It’s so well organized the Anglicans and Lutherans picked up the Roman lectionary cycle and have used it.

What a great review video! Thank you for making it. As a lifelong Catholic, I find the liturgy - the structured, consistent format of prayers, scripture readings, communion - to be very comforting, and as an adult knowing what comes next, it allows me the brain space to really enter into deep contemplative prayer during mass. I’m so glad you went up for a communion blessing. Often, visitors do not choose to do that, and they report feeling left out. We always want our guests to feel included, even if they cannot receive Jesus in the Eucharist because they do not yet share our faith (though we will always walk alongside them in their faith journey). I hope you’ll return for another mass soon.

As a Catholic, I find it very cool that you came to Mass with an open mind and fresh eyes! Too often we hear criticisms from non-Catholics (mostly Protestants) about our Faith without having ever gone to an actual Mass so this is refreshing to see! On your point about Mass feeling overwhelming for an outsider/non-Catholic, I can totally see how this can be especially with all the somatic type movements involved and I truly believe the standing, kneeling, sitting are part of being in posture with God and is meant to inspire outsiders. Also, the part about the priest encouraging the lay people to attend more often really is probably to receive Jesus (the Eucharist/Holy Communion). We truly believe through transubstantiation, that that is truly Jesus and the more we receive Him physically, the more sanctified we become. I know I probably said a whole bunch of words that make no sense but I hope you attend another Mass one time and learn from other Catholics! Loved watching this video :)

    AMDG
It's wonderful to hear you’ve attended Mass! Coming from a Protestant background, this experience may feel different, but there’s a lot that can deepen your understanding and appreciation for it. Here are some key aspects to reflect on as you consider attending again:
Structure and Liturgy: The Mass is highly structured, following a set of prayers and rituals dating back centuries. This structure is divided into two main parts: the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. The Liturgy of the Word includes readings from Scripture, a psalm, and a Gospel reading, where the congregation reflects on God’s Word. You might find this similar to the sermon-focused part of Protestant services, but with more of a focus on readings from the Bible rather than extended commentary.
The Eucharist: Catholics believe the Eucharist is not only symbolic but also the true presence of Christ in the form of bread and wine. This belief is rooted in Jesus’ words at the Last Supper, where He said, “This is my body” and “This is my blood.” The Eucharist is the high point of the Mass, where Catholics receive the grace of God. You may have noticed some people crossing their arms and receiving a blessing rather than Communion-non-Catholics or Catholics not in a state of grace can do this to participate respectfully.
Community and Communion of Saints: In addition to the people present, Catholics believe they are united with all believers, including those who have passed away (the “communion of saints”). This concept can add depth to the experience, seeing it as a unified worship with Christians across time and place.
Symbolism and Tradition: You might notice gestures like making the sign of the cross, bowing, or kneeling, as well as the use of incense or holy water. These symbols and actions aren’t arbitrary but are intended to help worshipers enter more fully into the experience and focus on God. If they felt unfamiliar, know that they’re part of a longstanding tradition meant to engage the body and spirit in worship.
Quiet Reflection: Catholics place a great emphasis on prayer, meditation, and silence throughout the Mass. You may have noticed people praying silently before and after Mass. This time of reflection is seen as a personal preparation and a thanksgiving afterward, helping Catholics center themselves on their relationship with God.
If you’re open to going again, try visiting another parish. Each community has its own style while sharing the same core Mass. You might experience different music styles or cultural variations that can add richness. It could give you a fuller perspective on why Mass is central to Catholic life.
2 Corinthians 13:14: "May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all."

Glad you could go to a Mass. 🙂 One of my favorite things about being a Catholic is the amount of different cultures. I’ve been to Masses in Vietnamese, Spanish, English, and Latin, and I’m able to follow along because I know the structure. It’s amazing how there is always something new to learn because each culture has its own influence on the Mass. I can see what you say about people getting caught up in the rituals of Mass, though, and not going beyond that. I think the purpose of the ritualistic side to Mass is to approach an event we see as very sacred with a lot of reverence. However, I’d also say it’s really important for Catholics to be investigating their faith on their own time by entering into their community and learning all that they can. There is so much beauty that I’ve only recently discovered in my faith , and I think I’ll be learning more about faith and spirituality for the rest of my life to come. I could never learn it all in one go, and thank goodness for that. 😊 If you’re ever interested in investigating Catholicism more, there is a very rich culture of intellectual learning and even healthy skepticism within the Church…I can also see how it can be overwhelming if it is someone’s first time in a Catholic Church. The Roman Catholic Liturgy to me is very natural because I’ve been exposed to it all my life, but I think it’s normal for it to be a bit strange for someone who isn’t familiar with it. A couple years ago, I attended my first Eastern Catholic Liturgy, and I was so confused because I had never been exposed to that type of service! So, maybe I can relate a bit to what you must have experienced! (Eastern Catholicism is part of the Catholic Church, but they worship in different ways than Roman Catholics because of cultural differences.) Sorry for the long comment, by the way!

I was an Atheist for around 12 years before coming back to faith 2 years ago, and I decided the Catholic Church was the right decision partially because of the Religious and spiritual experience and intimacy with our Lord. The majority of the reason is study of history and understanding the great depth of not only history, but theology within the Catholic Church, where we are not shy to be intellectual and discover the truths about God and the scriptures.
All this to say, THANK YOU! for an open, honest, non-hateful perspective on the Church and mass. It is refreshing to see people try it and not hate on the Church! God bless you.

You are a beautiful child of God. Truly His divine creation. I rejoice in the beauty of His creation everywhere. I pray for you now to continue on your path towards His love. And the Mass is the deepest ("regularly available") form of receiving and sharing in this Love. More than that: It is also our regular and dignified response to this Love. If you ever come to Berlin / Germany we can show you the living fire... Go forth - fear not!And for shame and guilt. That is what we all have anyway. The Church only helps us bring it to the light - and have it healed. That at least is the idea, even if many people have a hard time with this.

You made a lot of interesting and well-articulated observations. On one point in particular, towards the end, regarding the priest enouraging everyone to attend Mass multiple times a week - I think you hit it the nail on the head. There are many daily Mass goers (also called "daily Communicants" as they receive Communion daily) and yet some of them do seem to do exactly what you said: while some do grow in virtue and diminish in anxiety and fear for others it becomes a habit, a routine that doesn't really seem to make all that much difference in their lives. What I've found is that spending daily solitary time in meditation - or "conversation" - with Jesus is often more effective, either by itself or in combination with daily Mass.

I grew up in a Catholic Family in Oakland, California. My mother converted to Catholicism in order to marry my father in the Church. She was very devout. So much so that after 6 children she petitioned the Pope for an Annulment. All six of us kids went through kindergarten through Eighth Grade at the School administered by Our church, St.Leo's. In seventh grade, each student must research and report to the class about some Religion of the world and then share their findings with the class. Visiting the Shrine, Temple, Church, or meeting place of the target was highly encouraged. For myself, this was 1968. A particular feature of living in the SF Bay Area is the immense diversity of our population. I studied Zoroastrianism and was astonished to find so many similarities among their ancient beliefs and myths and those of Christianity. I appreciated your video and will look forward to your other adventures into 'Enlightenment'. ☮

Also a note on "Catholic Guilt” from a convert😚... it is often used in two contexts, both negative. It is often, in the Church referred to a “scrupulosity”. Which is likened to a condition or illness due to its psychological nature. It is not only being overly hard on one’s self about ones own sins. It is not being sure of God’s forgiveness of those sins and indeed not being sure of God’s special love for oneself. It can be bad (like Martin Luther) or very mild (older folks who feel they must, or become unsure of God’s mercy on them, pray a whole host of devotions for a few hours each day)(a mild pelagianism as well.) Whether this kind of prayer is bad depends on one’s heart and intentions, as prayer is best done out of love for God, rather than for self assurance of one piety.
So in the other context "Catholic Guilt” is used by fallen away Catholics, and I don’t blame them. But I would suggest they got one of two things wrong or both. One is that they fear confession. Which is the best way for the devil to convict someone of their unlovability. See by speaking the thing we are most afraid of out loud to a person who stands in the place of the all-loving God for that moment. we the rob the devil of his power over us. We become unafraid of our weakness. Then we have the clarity of a free consciousness and some counsel by the father to resolve to make a change in ourselves. The father does not beat us up for having sinned, he gently helps us to remember God loves us, and does not condemn us, forgives and reminds us that we have the ability, like the Adulterous woman, to do as Jesus told her “Go and sin no more”.
The other is an attitude dismissive of penance, which is maybe related to your wondering about Examination of Conscience. We examen our conscience not only for confession but at other times as well, (believe it or not, most people do it right before bed, and sleep just fine.)
The traditional EofC is meant to foster a greater aversion to sinning and a love for good. While it is difficult, because all of us, and that includes Cultural Catholics, don’t like to look at our mistakes or be reminded of them.
That blind eye would prevent us from realizing what we could be doing better.
I’ll give you an example, if a man grew up with a very loveing mum, and he never put the toilet seat down and forgets to use the brush, or would always leave his socks by the door, because his mum would pick them up and put them in his room. Well that boy who grows up to be a man might have great self esteem but he might still be inconsiderate of others.
Good insides, bad outsides (reverse of Catholic guilt). Would he know he is doing something wrong? Possibly, but only one of two ways. First is, someone tells him, but maybe he is very attractive, or funny, or a particularly sensitive person and people end up never telling him.
Then it takes a period of self reflection and a thoughtfulness about how he relates to others, or what he does or doesn't do for them.
This self reflection and conviction of self of sins, is necessary for everyone, Catholics and non-catholics. It removes our blindness of self to open the way for consideration of others. I would argue that even children should be thinking about how they can treat others kinder and behave more maturely as they get older, and of course it should be done in a way appropriate to their age.
So if you meet someone who seems to be full of "Catholic Guilt”; they might be struggling with knowing God loves them (which could be an attack from evil). Or they might feel they are at that point in their spiritual life that they need to emphasize the care and concern for others over themselves, very anthema to today's self serving culture. They might be someone you could learn a lot from too.🥲

Hey there, I am a priest as well (saw an earlier comment) and thank-you for sharing what seems to be a mostly positive experience at a Holy Mass. WIth the collection, it is needed, and appreciated, but never obligatory. Some protestant churches will require a tithe (ten percent of your total income) which is also scriptural, so this is not a knock on them, but normally what a Catholic drops in a collection basket, or hands in by manner of a monthly donation is a fraction of a tenth... normally. Again, everything is appreciated, but it is important to keep in mind that the Church has bills, repairs, a few employees, and much maintenance year round, but I can see how seeing people "hand over" their money can be strange. Just thought I'd give you that bit of feedback. :) Thanks again.

I converted to Catholic from curiosity. Kept going away and returning for years eventually settling there.
Found out that throughout the world from the smallest village to the largest cathedrals, Mass is the same.
Catholic churches are everywhere literally where there's freedom of worship or where they are allowed to have church in countries where there's limited freedom of worship.
So wherever I go worldwide, I look for the nearest Catholic church or a hiatorical one and you never have to second guess how Mass will be conducted. It's the same globally

I've been to other denomination mases before and I gotta say the Catholic Mass was the only one where I feel God's presence in. I felt the Holy Spirit the entire hour I was there. I have not chosen a church yet as I am a reborn Christian, back in June the Lord Jesus and Holy Spirit encountered me in my living room bringing me out of 28 years of atheism. Since that day I've been going to different churches to see which one I feel close to God in and the Catholic Church has been calling me. God has given me signs in videos like this one and constantly showing me that the Catholic church is the path I should take. The fact that they do communion in every mass is truly something I cherish. I was baptized catholic as a baby however I wanted to explore the other denominations before I made my final decision. Which ever path you chose is up to you, but the most important part is the Lord Jesus has to be at the center of it. Anything apart from that path will lead you to damnation. Jesus is Lord all glory to Christ.

I think when you say “sermon” you are referring to the liturgy of the word. You are absolutely correct that all of the same readings are read at every Catholic mass on that day. Following the readings, the priest/deacon gives his homily, which is not going to be the same from parish to parish. It is just that particular priests reflection on the readings for that day.
One thing to note about receiving communion is that Catholics are meant to be internally disposed to receive the Eucharist- if we haven’t been to confession but we have mortal sin on our hearts, we also should approach with arms crossed to receive a blessing instead of receiving communion, just the way that non Catholics do if they attend Mass.
I think it’s great that you were open minded enough to attend a Catholic Mass. I hope you’ll come back again!

    • @chewkie01
      @chewkie01 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

Yes, regarding communion, you need to be Catholic, and you have to have gone to confession first. All Catholics need to go to confession before receiving communion. This is extremely important. Although it’s perfectly fine to attend mass, you need to understand what you can and can’t do unless you’re Catholic. The main thing is communion.
It’s the original church founded by Jesus. There’s so much to know before you’ll feel comfortable attending mass, so that’s why you felt intimidated and lost. Also, nothing that happens during mass is symbolic. It’s all very real. There is a world of difference between attending Catholic mass and attending a Protestant church.
Once you understand what’s happening, you’ll understand so much more. I’ve gotta say, and you’re right, the mass is very structured. The Catholic Church is very… deep. Or complicated I guess you’d say. It’s important to understand the meaning behind everything you say and everything you do in the mass.
Do you know anyone who's Catholic? If so, maybe ask if you can go with them and that way you can take cues from them during the mass and you can ask questions after mass to help you digest what you just experienced, you know? I think that would help a lot and your Catholic friend would be more than happy to take you.
Have fun exploring the Catholic faith. It’s truly fulfilling.

I'll also add, the structure for me personally is SO "home-ey". Here is an example: In the military, I've been overseas in a number of countries that English is not spoken and gone to Mass. German, Flemish, Arabic, Greek, etc. But, going to Holy Mass has made it so I can follow along and participate, entering into deep prayer with Jesus, no matter where I am in my native tongue. Mass is the same in Roman Catholicism everywhere, and that is SUCH a blessing, comfort, and joy :) Lastly, those structured parts may appear so outwardly, and indeed you're right in pointing out the potential to end up just going through the motions, but for most of us these are deeply personal, in and from the heart times of prayer

The “structure” is very nice because you always know ahead of time what the readings and the Gospels are going to be. This gives you an opportunity to read and study ahead of time. The way they typically group the readings with the Gospel, you also learn how much of what’s in the Gospels is foretold in the Old Testament. I really enjoy that. I recently converted to Catholic from Baptist and I love the Catholic Church. Much of what I was told and believed about the Catholic Church before converting wasn’t accurate. I would encourage anyone to just visit a Catholic Church and experience it for yourself.

What I think is really interesting and makes the Catholic Church stand out from every other Christian denomination, but even every other religion is our catholicisity. Every Catholic parish worldwide believes the same things, they have the same doctrines and same theology, Catholicism's teachings are universal across all of the world. I have a friend who's a priest and he was telling me how he was amazed at the fact that someone across the world called him to ask him questions about theology and they had the same exact beliefs. This is one of many reasons that I ended up converting to Catholicism from Baptist protestantism.

@@isaiah3872 The I'm just comment on what original poster wrote.
-"Every Catholic parish worldwide believes the same things, they have the same doctrines and same theology."
      I'm saying they do vary.

@@sitka49 I mean this with love, but your information is very wrong. The Catholic Church has different rites, the rites have traditional differences as they come from different geographic areas, but they all have the same beliefs. For example, two notable rites are the Latin rite and the Byzantine rite. The Latin rite has a deep historical tradition that is directly linked to the early Church in the west, the Latin rite has two forms of the masses that are approved, the Novus Ordo (the most common mass today) and the Tridentine Mass (also called the Traditional Latin Mass, TLM), both masses are very similar to each other but have key differences in the style. The other rite I mentioned is the Byzantine rite which also has a deep historical tradition as it is directly linked to the early Church in the East. The Byzantine rite is essentially the Eastern Orthodox churches that stayed in communion with the papacy during the Great Schism. The Byzantine rite also has their own form of the mass that they call The Divine Liturgy. There are countless other rites in Catholicism that are all still in communion with the Pope and the Bishops, and they all have the same theological beliefs. The different rites may have different practices such as celibacy of priests, but they all hold to the same theological beliefs, which is what makes them the same denomination, because they all hold the same beliefs. This is the catholicism in Catholicism.

@@cadenchitwood9491 Jesus, assuming the narrative of the New Testament is more or less accurate, encouraged the formation of a church, though by tradition the church didn’t actually start until the first Pentecost, 50 days after the resurrection.
The early church was a loose association of Jesus’s surviving followers and a growing body of converts, which in time grew to a loose association of small congregations of converts spread across the empire. Over the next few centuries, these communities developed a range of doctrines, worked at settling questions about fundamental texts, worked up a sort of “international” administrative framework of parishes and dioceses, and so on. The books of the New Testament weren’t even finished being written until the end of the 1st century and the Bible didn’t really come together as a coherent canon of texts until around the early 4th century. Likewise, it took the Council of Nicaea in 325 to (sort of) settle the question of trinitarianism, and even then various branches of Christianity like the Copts and Syrians broke off from the “mainstream” (that is, the version of Christianity accepted as the right one by the Roman empire) to go their own way.
So here’s where we get to matters of interpretation. Each division and denomination of the church, be they Catholics, Orthodox, Protestants, Copts, Nestorians, Ethiopians, monophylies, Arians, or what have you thought that they were correctly interpreting scripture and the works of the early church fathers and others were not. They didn’t regard themselves as splitting off from the church and falling into error and even heresy.
Rather, each and every one of them thought they were doing Christianity right and everybody else was doing it wrong. It’s everybody else that fell away from the true church, not them.
The idea that Jesus specifically founded what we know today as the Roman Catholic church is an interpretation which is naturally championed by what we know today as the Roman Catholic church. You have to assume, of course, that the layers of interpretation justifying its doctrines and structures are all implicit in Christ’s relatively brief words, but the same can be said for any other modern church. We can say that modern churches developed from a foundation laid down by Jesus in certain ways, but to say that he founded one specific modern church and not any others depends entirely on how you regard centuries of development of Christian doctrine and practice.

As a practicing Catholic since 1997, I appreciate your outsider perspective. It was respectful and restrained. About going to mass, it is a requirement in most cases (Sunday obligation). Sometimes you aren’t feeling it, but the obligation leads to deeper waters.

We go to mass because of the Holy Eucharist, which is the body of Jesus our Lord. Receiving our Lord is the best thing for us.

This popped up in my feed. I am a catholic, and a sinner. I enjoyed your video. And yeah, in order to follow the first commandment, catholics go to mass every Sunday at a minimum. What is especially wonderful is that one can go every day. You should drop in during the week, at your convenience. Likely you will see people that are just there to worship. Peace
