Simply Skeptical
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 30 ส.ค. 2024
Scratching the surface of skepticism in relation to the idea of a personal god or gods. My main goal is to add to the conversation with a new perspective and to create a safe space for further discussion.
Will be releasing Skeptic Sunday videos periodically, each time I attend a different service!
I have received many recommendations for books to review. I created an Amazon wishlist for those recommendations, along with other Faith-related books. If you are interested in providing a book for review, please visit the link.
Thank you for checking out my channel!

In this video I detail my trip to Hell's Gates, an outdoor drama/performance hosted by a local Baptist Church. The event is advertised as an alternative to a haunted house. As mentioned in the video, if you have been to a similar event, let me know! I am interested to know if this is unique to my area or something others have experienced. Also, audio quality should be much improved! New mic tha...

First time attending Catholic Mass! --- Skeptic Sunday #1
มุมมอง 125K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
This is my first Skeptic Sunday video and I decided to go with a church I have been curious about for many years! I enjoyed my time and would love to go to another service, perhaps at a different location. If you agree (or disagree) with anything mentioned in the video, please let me know below! This is purely for educational purposes (myself included) and I am so excited to be a part of the co...
Oh, gross. You’re content farming the Faith. You had a sub for ten minutes.
I love your curiousity. Speaking from experience, you could attend 10 different Catholic masses (with different priests and/or different churches) and have 10 different experiences. We really love our priest, Father John Honiotes, at St. Mary's Minooka, Illinois. We (my husband and I) recently re-committed to being "Catholics in good standing". We have actually been attending daily mass, which I highly recommend. Check out Father John's homilies online. I like watching videos put out by various Catholic priests. So many different personalities to learn from. Also recommend Bishop Barron, Father Burke Masters, Father Leo, Father David Michael Moses, Father Frankie Cicero, just to name a few. God Bless.
Same Bible readings but certainly not the same sermon.
We have great music with full band. "Lamb of God " is a very moving. I miss not having wine in the communion. Homilies are very rarely mind blowing. Most of the churches decor have an inspiring ambience. People do not reach out like some churches. I truly believe the holy spirit is active there. And it makes my week go better.
If you can find one in your area, you should try to find and experience a High Latin Mass. It is an entirely different experience. Solemn is probably the best way to describe this. Low Mass is good too, though most of the prayers are silent so it can be difficult to follow.
What you’ll find is that the Catholic Tradition is nothing but an alternative, not stupid approach to interpreting Scripture. I came from a Calvinist Baptist background, myself, and my RCIA class was taught by a Doctorate from a Baptist Seminary. They have answers to every single objection you’ve ever had.
If you truly want to be open minded, you're going to need to start questioning your own presuppositions (if you aren't already). Why do you believe the feminist view (which I would say is now the modern view) of freedom is correct? You pretty clearly and explicitly laid it out: freedom is when people can do whatever they want to do without any outside influence. Personally, I'd say that's not freedom at all. Edit: commented before finishing the video but the point about defining freedom still stands
Very fair and balanced, non-judgmental review of the Mass. Since you indicated you grew up in a Baptist background, I hope some of the anti-Catholic views from those outside our Church were dispelled for you. I also believe that any attendee at any Church can become a "going through the motions" if their heart is not in the right place. However, most regular attendees are actively participating and thinking about what is going on even if it is structured. God bless you and if you are interested in learning more about Catholicism please talk with a priest or look up our Catechism book online to see what the Church actually teaches versus what non-Catholics say we do and teach. There is a lot of mis-information about it out there.
I loved your video. Now, as a catholic, I must say that people attending catholic churches are warmer in other countries than in my country (Spain). I have attended catholic Masses in USA, England, Germany, South Korea, France, Italy and Poland and anglican and lutheran services in England, Scotland and lutheran services in Germany. Surprisingly, people from England and USA are the kindest when you attend their church.
Buddhism is better
You should read „A case for Christ“ by Lee Stoeble 😊
Welcome Home. We sit when we are being taught. We stand for those things that the lord calls us to defend. We kneel before that which is beyond our world and governed by faith in the lord.
at the end of every fiscal year, our priest puts out a profit and loss statement. The last few years we have been in the black.
Read your Bible don't believe what any Pastor or priest tells you read for yourself God wants a relationship with you
A thoughtful review. I, too, did't quite buy Kimberly's conversion. Scott's conversion sounded genuine. Kimberly's sounded inauthentic. I felt that the marital conflict wore her down. Thank you, too, for your kindness in reviewing this book.
I am so glad that you enjoyed your first mass. God bless you. You can go to mass everyday. We get to receive the true body and blood of Jesus. It's not a symbol. It's really Him!! The mass is alive and I go everyday to give glory to God and thank Him for sending His Son to set us free!!
Look up Keith Neater he was a Methodist minister and is now Catholic. You can email him he is super nice and he can explain to you anything you Jane questions about. He also has another TH-cam channel the Rosary Crew with Keith Nester. I and several hundred people say the daily rosary and it is wonderful! On the Keith Nester channel he does Unpacking the mass every Tuesday and 6pm central. He will go through the readings explaining them and how they are all tied together. Especially if you are not familiar with a Catholic mass he brings it to life. As a Catholic we are not at Mass for our enjoyment)although I love it) we are there for God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. It is our time to give him. It is not about our enjoyment but about our commitment the God. If we happen to enjoy it all and the Homely touches our sour that is an added benefit. Also gory there early when it is quiet since Jesus is in the tabernacle in the form or a Consecrated host. Sit quit for a while feeling him then pray of talk to him. Knowing he is there with you. It is very powerful. Or sometimes you feel nothing, but give it time and suddenly 30-60mins will feel like 5. God Bless and look up Keith his email is in the info. 🙏
Hi just found your channel and am enjoying your videos. I identify as agnostic but the last year have developed an interest in religious studies. I’m more interested in the history of religions rather than theology but I follow a couple channels like yours and it’s nice to add you to the list. I’m reading through your comments and seeing a lot of Christians criticising your outlook on the book. It’s weird that thinking you shouldn’t stay in a marriage that is making you feel suicidal, or that giving up your dreams to be a homemaker in said suicidal marriage, is controversial/not understanding the faith. I think you understand the reasons the authors made their decisions perfectly fine considering you were once faithful. I personally feel a bit frustrated at the Christians seemingly watching you in efforts to convert you rather than be interested in your ideas or worldview. I feel like leaving a comment to say that I’m enjoying your explorations of different churches and different books just to see how they make you feel and what you learn from them!
Thank you! And I agree, to all of your points.
The Catholic Church also do have incense some time.
I see a lot of converts from protestants at this church. Where's this church located?
18 million members?? Lol. Also, Greeks are always late to everything
I do love Jesus. He is worthy. I just want to warn you to actually read the new testiment for yourself (if youre reading this). You will find so many contradictions about what the Catholic church and what the NT teaches people of faith to do. I'm only saying read it for yourself and you decide. Faith is the hope.
I'm glad you went to church. You know God loves us all, even those who don't believe. If you're not sure and you're looking for answers, you can pray. God hears us all. Say what you really think. All your concerns, doubts, etc. will somehow be answered. He will not be offended by anything he hears. He is so humble. What saddens him is that we don't talk to him and ignore him, he wants us to talk to him and tell him about our infidelity. Don't even think that Christians are not all believers. Many say they believe but not with their hearts. And Unfortunately, I don't have enough faith because I bend to difficulties. He wants us to confess to our Spiritual father with humility and repentance. Of course, he knows what's happening to us, but he wants us to communicate with him. My mother used to have various issues that concerned her, not that she doesn't believe, something else unrelated, when she went to church, the priest, who was our spiritual father at the time, may God rest his soul, in the sermon he talked about these issues as if he knew her questions! God finds various ways to help us. There is no luck or coincidences, only his providence.
It's interesting to get a viewpoint on the Catholic Mass from someone who is entirely outside of the church. As someone grew up in the church but did not receive a lot of faitf formation as I was growing up, may I recommend that you attend adult faith formation classes. They used to be called RC.I.A, but the curriculum has changed, and so has the name. These are the classes that many people take as they are determining whether or not they want to join the Catholic Church. You are not committing to confirmation at the end of the process, though if you wished to, you would have all the knowledge you need at the end of the classes to do so.
This was a beautiful summary of a beautiful experience. I would just like to say that attending the Holy Mass is not the best way for a person to be initially introduced to the Catholic Church without some understanding of the intended meaning behind the actions of the Celebrant Priest. The Mass is ancient and very Biblical. If you understand the Bible then you will feel the Bible come alive in the Mass. You will see that the New Covenant Christian Worship is rooted in the Worship of the Old Covenant Judaism. It's good to be skeptical. Seek the answers to your questions in all honesty and the Truth will be revealed to you. God bless.
I was born Christian Orthodox , I live in Cyprus, and I praise God for this blessing. Through the mysteries of our church, the confession, the holy communion Lord is in with us and along with the help of our mother Virgin Mary and our beloved saints we gain strength and learn how to live in God's love and will. God bless you all
Hi, welcome to the Catholic Church! Feel free to visit as long and as often as you like. Catholics will not pressure you to join. If you would like more information sometime, each parish has something called the OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults.) They host inquiry sessions where you can ask questions and learn more about the Catholic faith. Thank you for dressing beautifully for mass! Blessings to you.
You should check out a Russian or OCA church. OCA will be mostly in Greek
Please continue learning about the Catholic Church ! It is the only institution I can think that has been around for 2000 years !! You can spend months and months just researching and it will always have more to learn and connect with
I’ll keep your journey in my prayers and I hope to hear how your next Catholic mass is!
they werenot late. most middle or young greeks go to the church around 20min or less before its ends. curse that also apply to every event. like easter or christmas
Οrthodoxy has all the Divine Grace in it, and the Apostolic Succession, but Satan envies it, and puts his own people in to discredit it. Don't pay attention to them, and go yourself, you will benefit.
A note: Even if you are a Greek Orthodox and participate in Divine Liturgy you can't take the holy communion . The necessary condition is to confess to your spiritual father (a priest that is allowed to act the sacrament of confession) and ask his permission to take it.
I’m a US-born Greek and enjoyed your video. I’m also appreciating the comments especially about the role of the priest and bible and agree with the fully sensory experience of services. Also, welcome to Greek time! 😂 Hope you enjoy the festival and report back.
You are confusing the liturgy of the word with a sermon, i.e. homily. The homily is not exactly the same in every church. The old and new testament readings are the same.
About younger people in the GOC churches: it depends upon the area. Around Ann Arbor, MI (UofM) there are a few more 20 year olds that go to St.Nicholas GOC than what you encountered. I suppose that's because it's close to the university. Speaking about college, there is a concerted effort to make that age group leave church. I've studied at several universities, taught at colleges, read the textbooks and professional journals, talked to colleagues and that is my impression.
I will like you to watch. Why the liturgy of the word by bishop baron. You will understand the first part of the mass😊
The so called Old Testament was not written in Greek. It was written in Hebrew and the Torah was translated into Greek by Rabbis for Greek speaking Jews at the time of the Second Temple. It was called the Septuagint
I see that Kimberly had a plan of what their life would look like, when Scott changed course it was like a dream died, Scott researched so much he could not unsee the early church teachings, Kimberly hadn't the time as she did in school with young ones, she would see what Scott saw and conclude the same thing at a much later date.
If you ever come to Greece please please visit a church here. They are much more ornate and quite different as far as seating arrangements go, thus the Liturgy is more imposing for lack of a better word.
I enjoyed your video. When a person attends a Mass, they witness a miracle. They witness a supernatural event of bread and wine supernaturally changed into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. Luke 22:19-20 Jesus takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to his disciples, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me”. He also says, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood”. Let us place this verse into context. Our Lord is omniscient, all knowing. He knows exactly what will happen in five minutes and 1,000 years later. Therefore, Our Lord knows he will be crucified the following day. The word spoken of someone shortly before their death are very important. Our Lord says at the Last Supper, “Do this in remembrance of me.” That is a command, the most important command because he knows the next day he will die.” But why is Our Lord giving us himself? Because Our Lord is 100% percent pure love. What does love DO? Not what is love. Love gives. In life on earth, when we love someone, what do we do? We give of our self. We help others. We make or purchase gifts to those whom we love, which is giving of ourselves. Think of parenthood, we give ourself to our children so that they may life a wonderful life. We raise them for 18 years so that you they can live with a spouse for the next 40+ years. When we marry, we give to our spouse especially in the marital act. Because love gives. I recommend read Eucharistic Miracles by Joan Carroll Cruz, published by TAN publishing. Currently, this can be purchased for $5 as opposed to $25. TAN Publishing is an excellent source for solid Catholic books. Now consider why Jesus Christ became man only to be crucified. The best explanation can be heard in a TH-cam video, presented by Fr. John Riccardo entitled “Rescued & Response: Jesus is Not Just Kind!” This is a long video but very informative. You will learn more in this one video than spending hours reading books or hearing other talks. Father Riccardo is an excellent orator. If you enjoy "Jesus is Not Just Kind" watch "Common Ground: What Protestants and Catholics can Learn From Each Other" by Fr John and his friend a Protestant minister.
As a Christian teen it is extremely sad to see these extreme Christian nationalists with an Americanized Jesus and an Americanized perspective in general. And their vast assumptions based on their limited perspective. It is honestly very odd to me that they would claim something and even preform something like this and claim it to be absolute truth - even though it is one of the most debated topics within the Christian faith. But nevertheless thank you for your honesty and for sharing your experience. And sorry for this odd perspective.
I am a teenager who is a Protestant Christian as of now, but I love watching your videos on all of these different denominations. I love hearing your perspective and your honesty. Thanks for sharing!
Simply Skeptical , ❤❤❤❤❤❤✝✝✝✝
I assume that you attended around 17th December due to Agios Dionysios, as Greek Orthodox celebrate saints and we have also the "name day", to be specific men or women named Dionysios or Dionysia from western part of Greece will celebrate their name day on 17th December. A few quick comments The church(building) is basically a basilika with a dome which is very common. Inside the dome will always have painted the "Παντοκράτωρ" (the one that has all power, it cannot be easily translated). As for the decoration inside the main influence is that it had to compete with the temples of other faiths of that time, hence the colors and art. Take into account that the drawings also is to provide education. Regarding the lethargy. The chanting is Byzantine style, if I am not mistaken used for more than 1500 years and the priest in orthodoxy is considered more like a "teacher/professor/scholar" that will provide guidance based on the dogma itself rather than a divine representative or selling the faith or donations (it also helps that the bible/new testament is written in Greek hence in Greek Orthodoxy it is difficult to come up with a different translation). Then elements of lethargy have a elements or try to mimic a "theatrical representation" because that you have to consider that at the time theater was a form of education or a way to communicate more complex meanings to the common people, thus not a ritual but a divine theatrical play if you will that prepares/opens you "pray/communicate with God". As for the time 1 hour 40 minutes is more or less the common for Sunday, but in many special celebrations it can be more than 3 hours.
You don't need a concert when you have the Son of God coming to every Mass.
In some Greek Orthodox churches ⛪️ the people who attended they pay yearly or monthly money 💴 to the church ⛪️ compare to Greece 🇬🇷 who get pay by the Government because the government took the land who belongs to the church ⛪️ and this lands given to the church ⛪️ by the believers!!! Same like as states like NYC or others!!!! The priest get paid by the church ⛪️ but still the people have to pay money 💴 to attend!!! But in other states people pay LOTS OF MONEY 💴 TO THE CHURCH ⛪️ ONE OF THE REASONS I DONT ATEND TO THE GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCHES ⛪️ ANY MORE IN USA 🇺🇸And that’s why the greeters!!! They wanted to check if you pay 💰 the money 💴 to attend or if you are going to pay!!! MONEY 💴 AT ALL!!! Do not make mistake its all about 0:30 money 💴 Jesus is not in the churches ⛪️ or God!!! GOD AND JESUS IS INSIDE YOUR HEART AND SOUL!!! You don’t need the church ⛪️ to tell you how to be a good Christian!!! I am not an ATHEIST but the church ⛪️ is full of corruption!!! Not everywhere but almost everywhere is all about money 💴
These are heretic doctrines. The orthodox churches are the Body of our Lord God, Jesus Christ our Saviour. If some Archbishops or Clergyman betray jesus with their behaviour which is aligned with the spirit of the material world,it doesn't mean we won't attend the Holy Liturgy every Sunday or at the Saints's liturgies.
I appreciate this so much as a Catholic. Although it was against our faith, you may want to look into the movie “Dogma” by Kevin Smith. It came out when I was a teen and actually gave me such a better perspective and strong appreciation of my faith. Best of luck!
Billions of people didn't want to be in this Failed earth experiment. Please tell that to Jesus. In the next reset God should go back to keeping Dinosaurs 🦖🦕
Thanks for sharing your honest impressions of attending a Catholic Mass in a charitable and respectful way. I did want to give you some background on a couple things that you mentioned. The 1st was about the ads on the back of the church bulletin (newsletter). Those ads are paid for by businesses and people not necessarily affiliated with the church and the revenue from those ads is used to defray (or even cover) the cost of publishing the weekly bulletin. The other thing you mentioned was that all of the homilies are the same across the world for a given day. This is not the case. The content of the homily is largely up to the priest or deacon giving the homily. What is the same worldwide in every Catholic mass on a given day is the selection of readings from the Bible (eg 1st reading, 2nd reading, responsorial psalm and the gospel) that are proclaimed during the mass. Sometimes there are a few options that the priest can pick from depending on the feast day, etc. but normally the readings are the same. Thanks for the great video and keep up the good work!
