Passed on my first attempt today after 6 lessons (reduced EDT) and watching all of your videos. Had 4 Grade 1s and 6 Grade 2s. Thank you so much Dane :)
I've passed on my second attempt today! Had many bad habits to loose, as I'm already a licensed driver in my home country. Your videos were essential on my journey to be a good driver in Ireland. Keep up the good work!
Hi Dane. I passed my driving test today 11/08/22 here in Cork. It was my 2nd attempt. I just wanted to say that without a doubt your videos helped me 1000%. Fair play to ya. Keep up the good work man. 👏
Someone I know was told by the tester they nearly failed because they were not going at the speed limit (60km) when it was a housing area with cars parked either side. I thought that sounded a little harsh.
I asked my instructor about checking blind spot when turning left as there's cycling lane on my left, she said just quick glance on the left and central mirror but don't take my eyes off the front (by turning shoulder), if cyclist shows up in the left mirror or peripheral vision then yes let them pass, if they don't show up in the mirror they're far enough for me to make the turn.
If you're observing on the way down to the left turn and aware of what cyclists might or might not be there then that will help. I would not be encouraging drivers to check shoulders, mirrors yes.
So grateful for your videos! I was wondering what you think the speed we should aim for is in areas where the speed limit is 50/60 but there are large ramps every few metres or lots of traffic lights? I try to progress to get close to the speed limit but it's very difficult to have to slow down sharply in the spaces between ramps and lights, similarly I don't know if trying to go around 40km in between would be considered too slow. Thank you!
Be practical, don't turn it into a race. You don't necessarily need to reach the speed limit all the time, you need to bear in mind what conditions you have.
Thank you for the reply, I really appreciate it. Your channel is so valuable, will be donating to your PayPal later today and encouraging everyone I recommend your videos to to do the same.

I will sound frustrated now and I do admit this is after failing my test but I just have to say this. Some of the faults are so relative and at times ridiculously worded it makes me want to give up on learning to drive at all. I was marked down on my driving test for "showing too much caution". This was about me creeping into a right turn at a blind junction and the tester literally told me he feels I was pretending to be cautious to make a point I am. I would not mind if he told me it's a lack of progress. For me, it was the wording he used. I made him feel like I am pretending to be cautious, what does that even mean?!
If the tester is saying that you are pretending to be cautious that means that you are trying to put on an act for the tester as a way of showing him you are extra careful, the tester doesn't need you to put on a fake show of caution, he wants to see you drive naturally and in a confident way. What part of this is so difficult to understand?
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Jonathon is right. While the tester had a solid reason to mark me down, losing marks on progress is one thing. Holding back traffic and being slow making decisions is a driving fault. But the language used to give a feedback is ridiculous. "I feel like..." is a very poor choice of words. And while I agree with the test outcome the genuine reason for looking left and right 5 times is me lacking confidence and delaying decisions, and not trying to entertain the tester with shows. Using the language which makes it about the tester ("learner offend them by driving slow, learner makes them feel like they are putting on a show") is not a valuable feedback. If the tester says in this particular situation you need to make more progress so you don't hold back traffic and don't cause an impatient driver to bump at you is explaining the problem and suggestingvthe way to correct a pattern. Saying my driving makes them feel like (incert whatever the tester feels on the day) isn't helpful to anyone. If learner should not be allowed on the road - fail them, but provide an adequate feedback. If anything the tester is not correct. I failed my test as I didn't practice enough and still freaking out seeing traffic coming my way. A good reason to send me back to practice but not good enough to accuse me in throwing a performance
I agree with the need for valid feedback but the tester is there to examine you and is not your tutor, some testers will give detailed feedback while others won't bother giving anything. Sometimes it is hard for the tester to judge a candidate being cautious due to inexperience and nerves and one who is auditioning for slowest driver of the decade. Personally I don't see that much wrong with the wording but I suppose in this day and age when everyone is so sensitive to criticism it is going to cause upset and stress to some.
Going over ramps i stay in 3rd gear but I'm still able to slow down to 20-25 and go over ramps just fine. Is it ok to do this in 3rd? I always wonder the same thing for quiet roundabouts too.
The other issue with driving below the speed limit is that cars behind you are more likely to overtake you in a risky way. So it's actually dangerous to drive too slowly.
In my last test I got a grade 2 for being too slow at the house states, before I failed for speeding too much and speeding wise I wasn't that much difference so maybe depends on the tester?
It can depend on the tester to a certain extent but you need to stop thinking in this basic way because it depends on the individual situation so you need to judge each road individually.
Agree with Dane here, be careful with your speed, now obvious this depends from tester to tester but i got a minor for speed for example, her argument was that i was driving 1/2 km above the limit
Both an observation from learners I've interacted with as well as a general cultural misunderstanding that some people from the Indian sub continent possess.
Yeah that's right, I don't encounter it personally in Wexford but an awful lot of emails from learners from other parts of the island have been doing this as a way of showing the tester they are extra observant. Completely unnecessary.
I've already explained that in my experience a high proportion of people from the Indian sub continent have a habit of driving too slow in a driving test and based on that It would only be weird if you didn't understand the context which I explained in the video, so did you watch the video?
