Defending UChicago's Business Economics Major

  • Voilà, my magnum opus. Now that finals for this quarter are finished, I finally got some of my fun work done (and yes, finals went swimmingly. Thank you for asking).
"Economics with Specialization in Business Economics" is a bit of a touchy subject at UChicago, so I made a video that not only explains it but defends it. After all, it pretty much is my major at this point. It's a really interesting new major with lots of fun classes to take, so I'd like to show people why it really doesn't deserve to be the butt of jokes.
I'm not here to start fights, but if you want to preserve your sanity, you'd be much better off watching this video than scrolling through UChicago's Reddit page.
I would hope that there aren't gross errors in me making this video. I don't think there are any; however, if you're curious about the major, I highly suggest that you check out the course requirement page: collegecatalog....
Disclaimer: I’m obviously not being paid by The College for this video. This video is just a collection of my personal opinions.

prospective student here!! and i honestly hated the idea of being forced into some theoretical bs that will have no applications w my career goals.. people r just shitting on the major bc they’re mad they had to go through years of misery and painful math LMAO

It's pretty wild. So many people outside the school I've talked to think it's a great major. I'm just gonna say they're jealous 😎

hey reese, i'm thinking about studying business and am looking at uchicago as a uni i could apply for. However, i am a bit confused because on the common app, under the UChicago apply section, when you click the dropdown menu to select the "academic discipline" / major of your choice, "Business" isn't there... I can only see "economics". Is there no business undergrad major offered by uChicago like ones offered by other schools such as NYU?

      Hey Eric!
No problem -- UChicago is a liberal arts school, so we don't have a business degree for undergrads (liberal arts schools have fewer and more "academic/research-y majors"). The business schoolwork that I am doing is a part of the economics degree (specifically the business track - Your degree when you graduate just says economics, I believe). Therefore, if you want to do the same thing that I'm doing, you would select "economics."

@@ReeseKlemm thank you! this really cleared it up for me, I'm still considering applying to Uchicago. You mentioned "theoretical math" in this excellent video, what does that sort of cover? is it really challenging?

Hey! So now I’m highly considering this major! Thanks for the video! I have a quick question that I tried googling but I am still not sure: do you know what type of jobs someone can expect to have with this major? I’m unsure as to how to distinguish between the jobs for Econ vs jobs for business vs jobs for business Econ

Sure -- I think that what drives people towards the other tracks that aren't business is the possibility of grad school. I'm talking about completing a masters or phD in econ (business school is fine). The track is obvs super new, but in general, the job possibilities are pretty expansive, especially considering the degree is still "Economics." I think you'll have a better idea once you meet more people, but lots of people at uchicago will do consulting, finance, banking, etc. etc. (the track really lends itself to everything but "quant" stuff)
