I honestly fought the crimson glow valstrax with couple of friends and my girlfriend, it was a super tough fight, and then made it to master rank in sunbreak. Very beautiful it's move sets were insane and even though I lost I didn't stop until I got it's armor and the gunlance weapon version. I was really satisfied getting it's armor took a break and then started master rank, the difficulty change definitely changed the game, but I still kept kept pace, I took a break due to going on a vacation. I still keep in touch with my girlfriend while I another country and we started playing monster hunter generations ultimate. The experience is very different still new but I'm excited to learn and understand the fighting styles the arts the new way of fighting gathering and learning new info about the game. Can't wait to see what's awaits Mr and others later on in the game as well as sunbreak when I make it back.
Valstrax is my favorite monster. Jetpack rocket dragon is so dumb but so fun too. I like that you can have a classical dark fantasy dragon... And then IN COMES A ROCKET or a carpet bombing dragon with exploding pinecones of death.
From someone who had a friend who was a newcomer (he has less than 40 hours in the game). He really liked the Aknosom Armor and reeeeally wanted it. So he hunted it over and over again (keep in mind he’s somewhat new to the game, so these hunts were taking a while for him) and he lost track of how many times he slayed Aknosom trying to get flame sacs (made even worse if you include the amount of times he failed a quest because Aknosom carted him a few times). It got to the point where he asked me to bring my character with G rank gear into his low rank multiplayer lobby just so we could slay it at a faster rate so that we could get the flame sacs sooner and move on. I do believe there is a bit of a grind in monster hunter. I’m sure everyone has experienced at some point, wanting a piece of material from a monster but never having it drop because of bad luck. There is even an in-joke within the community where people say the devs programmed a “desire sensor” that lowers the chances of you getting something you want the more you desire it. Even if they get lucky with “rare” drops (or in my friend’s case, a 20 percent drop), if there is an armor set that a newcomer finds cool, they would have to repeatedly fight a monster so that they have enough materials to make that armor. That’s part of the fun in monster hunter, creating new gear, but sometimes it can take more effort than what was intended
Side note, that’s not to say the grind is bad, just that it does exist. For someone like me, I enjoy listening to the same song over and over, I don’t mind it, but for others it can tire them out (or at the very least, they get burned out sooner).
All true, however I think the point is that getting that flame sac may not have been considered "a grind" by your friend. From the outside looking in it looks like one, but being a new player, your friend would have had that driving goal to get that flame sac. They'd also learn about the nuances of the Aknosom's moveset since it would still be new to them. On say the 10th hunt, "Oh, THAT'S how I avoid that move!" Granted, I never learned that. Stupid jumping Aknosom is anathema to my brain and I still heal more than attack against it 😆
@@semu852 True, but when he described his experience with me, he did use the phrase “grind” and got to the point where he wanted me to fight it with my end game character to speed up the process. Although he did think Aksnosom was neat, what he really wanted was the armor (he felt weird not having the complete set), so that he can wear it and move on to the next monster (funnily enough, this happened again with Khezu only it wasn’t as bad cause he got the materials sooner lol). I guess my point is, is that there is a certain level of “grind” in this game. Sometimes it’s small, and sometimes it can take a while. For some players, the grind may not seem that bad, and they may even enjoy it or love it, while for others it can take its toll. But regardless of whether or not we love it, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist, because if there is an armor set or weapon that you really want, it might take repeated fights with a monster to get it. Whenever I talk to someone who’s new to the series or wants to try it out, I always warn them “the game can get a little grindy at times, so don’t be afraid to ask for help if it happens” because it’s very possible for a new player to go into the game, fight the same monster over and over again, only to not get a piece of material they want, and determine that the game is too “grindy.” It’s happened with a few of my friends who didn’t like it, but a few of my other friends loved it. But to imply that a grind does not exist can be very misleading, especially if a new player who doesn’t know much about the series hears this and sets an expectation going into it.
The secret sauce of MH is that the game really gives you unparalleled freedom in a true sense: your journey is what you decide it to be. Pick a weapon, then a weapon among weapons (Or don't), then make a set - mixed, vanilla, comfy, silly, crazy, meta.... anything goes. You set your own goals, and at your on pace. Of this is grind, then it is the gentlest.
"When is the last time you appreciated how awesome all the monsters are" Yesterday, and the day before, and the day before, and the day before... Seriously, monsters are what kept me going during the "hate" part of the "you hate old monster hunter when you start then love it forever" and I always love seeing them even after countless kills, every monster is my baby. This. I LOVE getting a new player in and being able to share cool lore about how the monster works or it's ecology, as well as mechanics. They're so interesting! Mizitsune you fight are always male, as they become very agressive during breeding season. Females and males out of season are actually more drab!
For me the grind is my bad luck on getting gems. 17 hunts to get a single goose mantle. My friend who helped me with those hunts got 6. The "how have you not gotten one yet? I have six!" Definitely contributed to the grind.
Kulve Taroth is underrated as fck. I hope to see her in future games. She's the most fun I've ever had trying to take her down with my friends. Her design is just gorgeous and her gear is top notch... one of the bests
I have to give it to Capcom for making a game fun to engage with repeatedly in aprox 20 min bursts. The monster that got me playing just for the fun fight is Mizutsune. That's how I got in tune with playing Lance.
First time i hear somone saying monster hunter is not grindy, monster hunter IS a grind from beginning to end but is a fun grind. Being grindy nowadays is considered bad only because some games do it wrong.
I took my time with Rise and Sunbreak, 100%ing each Quest level (as always). The first time I saw Lunagaron, many hours before hunting it, I was _actually upset_ with how disappointed I was, watching this Tobi-Kadachi show up, Tobi-Kadachi-ing around with its Tobi-Kadachi body and animations, doing Tobi-Kadachi things. It wasn't until after hunting it an indeterminate number of times that I really _felt_ like it was a unique Monster, and no longer a Tobi-Kadachi reskin. Sometimes, the first impression just doesn't sell it. Presumably, this was also a major issue with the _many, many_ reskins of Frontier, long after the rest of the series moved on from Purple Gypceros and Green Plesioth.
It's dependant on the monster but I feel like I'm more on the appreciative side than downplaying. There are some I don't like (Almudron and Paolumu recently) but I like most new monsters. I do worry they will overuse a skeleton, but Wilds has assuage that fear. I love that they are using the monkey skeleton on an amphibian, that the Leviathan skeleton is getting some cool usage. That the temnoceran skeleton is here to stay (I was very worried after 4U we were never getting new bugs)
I will never forget when I had to hunt lagiacrus for literally 20 times to get 1 plate. And thank god it is my favourite monster. Bazeljuice did the same to me in Rise, but that was worse becuase I hate her.
3:30 I definitely felt and knew the Grind when I was playing World for the first time tbh. My first MH game. (When I was new!) It heavily reminded me of Warframe but not in a good way. Friend and I had to fight Legiana over and over and over and over and over to get his gear. I think like 10 times? Also remember fighting those quests for armor and spheres and decos over and over I only kept playing for a bit because of my experience with Warframe. But ironically going back to warframe years later ,(I much prefer the Warframe grind over it😅) I think the only monsters that didn't feel that way for me was Bazel and Seething Bazel as a new player. Mostly because they were the only ones I liked
Warframe's grind is so much worse. Or maybe I've just been burned by one too many relics. I just love doing disruption for HOURS to get a single relic only for it to give me a forma blueprint instead of a prime part.
Once Ive got my armor and endgame weapon i do the decofarm quests a couple of times. Then i quit the game for good, its not fun doing the same quests over and over.

What gets me about post game is the repetition of quests. Story quests are always new and exciting especially if it's a monster you haven't faced before. After that though, the game does start to stale. I think it's designed this way on purpose and there are still a few new experiences post game (dlc updates usually add new monsters). Reducing the amount of control a player has using randomized mechanics can increase the engagement when done correctly, but RNG decos/talisman is the wrong approach imo. RNG should be in the hunts not in building out optimal sets. RNG investigations where you pick from a list of randomized equipment sets, then fight unknown monsters would literally fix post game for me. I don't get much satisfaction from optimizing my hunt times and building out the best equipment sets, I want something that forces me to adapt to what I'm given. I could just build weak equipment sets or use weapons I'm not used to to achieve a similar result but part of the fun is having the game decide the rules for you, not the other way around. TL/DR: I want something like the arena challenges but as RNG investigations as a way to make post game less stale.
I've literally been thinking about this lately. Grinding anomaly investigations almost made me stop playing a couple times. (It didn't help that through most of the title updates, I was playing completely solo. Thank you iixx for the discord community; it's been a life saver
You got arenas for this. But I think it is definetly not a good idea, to take out of the players hand it's growth in progression in gear. Taking complete control out of the players hand can make it fun once or twice, but doesn't keep most players engaged for the most time and it becomes tedious and frustrating really quick. You definetly want a "sense" of growth, through gear progression and habilities...
