Kudos for using the old school art for Kird Ape. I will always love that card. Back in the day a friend of mine went to one of those little kiosks at the mall where you give them a picture of a loved one and/or yourself and they put that picture on a t-shirt and he gave them a Kird Ape card. Another friend that went with him got a Pestilence (Alpha - 4th Edition art) but it was just nowhere near as funny and still cool as the Kird Ape shirt. Best conversation piece ever.

@@VictorReyes-rc9xp Torbran really was the shot in the arm mono-red needed there. It basically multiplies the 1-damage spells/effects by 3, which is basically the exact multiplier that is needed when you have 3 opponents rather than 1. something to interesting to note that "x-drop" as it's evolved from an mtg term to a general card game term seems to less refer to a permanent of x mana, instead referring to a card you play _on_ turn x for maximum mana efficiency. this generally means that a 1-drop is still a 1-mana creature equivalent, but it can also include other types of cards that summon tokens or otherwise do something relevant on turn one, while precluding 1-mana creature equivalents that are more utility- or combo-focused unless you're really desperate to put something on the board it also means that with any form of ramp or cost reduction, a card be an x-drop even if its cost is higher than x
Well this is a pretty specific Top 10 list. And since Grim Lavamancer has 2 points from Vintage, I can perfectly use it as a segue for "Top 10 Vintage Cards (Minus Power 9)". It's sure less specific than this.
Always love the content! The Mogg Fanatic got me thinking though, Top 10 cards that rules changes hosed. Like one of my old school casual favorites Citadel of Pain
Ah Mogg Fanatic, we'll always have the stack years. Goblin Guide's "downside" is really a bonus, as 60% of the time you get to see what your opponent is drawing next.
Mogg fanatic was originally printed BEFORE damaged used the stack. So it’s more correct to say it got a buff when damage got put onto the stack and went back to normal afterwards
I want you to do “top 10 cards with the fewest points”. I’m sure some cards in your system should have much, much higher scores, but have been banned from too many formats too soon and therefore have a surprisingly low score. What are the best cards with the fewest points? Also, been a fan for a while! Keep up the great work!
Hey do you think you'd ever do a top 10 cards by year? Like within each respective year since magic started, the cards that earned the most points that year. That kind of helps give a better idea of how older cards were powerful within their own context.
There are so many great 1 drop Red cards and I'm sure stats wise it doesn't compare to what's on the list, but Stromkirk Noble is just so freaking good. It can't be blocked by humans and with so many humans out there and with people generally hesitant to sacrifice their own one drop creatures just to block him if they can block, there's a good chance he's getting through during the first turn that he's able to swing and then he starts pumping himself up. Tack on double strike or cast another spell to start getting him counters from more sources and he's a threat before you know it.
(0:00) I am wondering how Mogg Fanatic did. That was quite dominant (and in my opinion better than Jackal Pup) once upon a time. [Edit] But then I forget the old cards never have as many points (there were probably were less tours and GPs).
I feel like there is a small flaw in methodology with these lists though I'm not sure how to fix it. Recent Standard formats seem to get way more events than older ones did which means that recent cards end up unfairly weighted towards. Not sure how to fix it but maybe worth taking a note of.
I feel like it should be mentioned that Mogg Fanatic was intended to work like it does now-- damage started using the stack in Sixth Edition, about a year and a half after the Fanatic was printed. The current rules honor the original intent of the card, even if it's not nearly as powerful.
I consider any rdw deck that has all or almost exclusively 1 drop spells to be Boss Sligh ie Tom Ross’s deck from original thermos that used Akroan soldier and unblockable effects.
does Bomat Courier not count because it only has an activated ability that is red? i would imagine it would have been here if it was considered for the list
Personally, a recent favorite of mine is Escape Velocity. It’s cheap, gives haste, and boosts power early- especially with something like the recent Anax making that +1 into a +2 because it boosts devotion.
I’m honestly surprised goblin lackey isn’t on this list. I mean, cheat in your strongest goblins from your hand. Better yet, combine it with a goblin wizard, and goblin recruiter to stack your deck and drop the goblins you are drawing... not bad at all.
Too Gimmicky, sure, those games where you get it out turn one, then turn two hitting with it and getting out Siege Gang Commancer, or Kiki Jiki or Recruiter or any of the other far better goblins feels really good, buuuuuuuut, it is a 1/1 without haste so most decks worth their salt are going to have ways of just saying no before it does that AND it relies on you have said other powerful card in your hand. Also because of its age and lack of reprints, it is only viable in Legacy and Vintage where there are MILES better one drops you can play.
Did standard GPs become more common in the later years? If yes, then it's no wonder the 2014 and 2017 cards have more points in standard than the older cards.
Nizzahon Magic Ok, I did a little searching on scryfall.
