I know I've seen this and commented on this before, but I only just realized why there was the need to get the mushroom and the leaf in the mushroom houses instead of the actual levels. It's a bit comical, really: points are so unimportant in this game that you don't notice you're getting them until you're challenged like this
World 8 is pretty crazy, considering you actually have to get in harm's way to throw all the Bob-ombs out of each other's way, otherwise a Bob-omb blasting another Bob-omb counts for 100 points
I kind of knew about that pipe in 8-1 from the beginning from the Nintendo Power strategy guide. As for standing on Rocky Wrench, watch out, because they can still potentially hit you with the wrenches they throw if you're not careful. Also, jumping on them normally stomps them, but a perfectly lined up jump can land on them gently enough to not stomp them. And, yeah, I saw those video glitches in the W8 pipes too, but I didn't think they were a big enough deal to warrant recreating the video.
1-1, 1-2, 1-3 warp4, save, 3-1 warp5, save, 4-2 warp6, save, 5-3 warp7 Basically, I took all four warp vases to skip as many bosses as possible (so the only points were 2000 each for Birdo in 1-1 and 1-2, and 10 each for the potions). As I said, it's rather trivial. (I think I could have skipped 3-1's warp since 4-1 has no boss, but playing out 4-1 takes more time and has a forced rocket anyway.)
Huh, there was a comment made by Konrad Borowski here that said: "Could this be optimized by beating the game once before doing the run to get a P-Wing to avoid needing to visit second Mushroom House in World 1?" However, the comment is gone now. I don't know why, since it's a perfectly legitimate comment in my opinion. Well, here's what my reply would've been: "Well, I suppose that would qualify as a New Game+ run then, and yes, I wouldn't need to play 1-5 or 1-6, and could just get my Fire Flower from the first Mushroom House instead. So, by not playing those two levels, I'd save 100 points total on the two 1-second time bonuses, thereby making the lowest score for New Game+ equal to 560 (or 550 if that one brick in 8-Fortress could be avoided)."
Interesting how I continue to learn new random things from your videos-- for example, the existence of a certain bonus area in 8-1 (why had I never thought to check that pipe before?), and that you can ride Rocky Wrenches all the way up and continue to stand on them safely. Also, what happened when entering the first two world 8 pipes? It seemed like a video glitch at first, but it occurred for two different pipes.
Well, I generally wouldn't want to get a Game Over to reset my score in a low score run. But, a "New Game+" type of thing would be a different story (although, here it would just be mostly the same thing, except I wouldn't go to 1-5, 1-6, and the second mushroom house, and I'd get a flower from the first mushroom house and use a P-wing for the fortress's whistle).
TAS can mean Tool-Assisted Speedrun or Tool-Assisted Superplay. I think this would mostly be the latter, though I did speed through some parts as fast as I could (only to have to wait at the goal or just before a boss for the timer to tick down in most cases).
I thought of that, but clearing 1-Airship would get me another 50 points, and the Hammer Bro. on the map won't move over a cleared tile, so I'd have to defeat him and get at least another 100 points that way. And, I don't think the P-wing would help save me any points at all in world 8. (However, you can start a new game with 28 P-wings after beating it once, which will save you one mushroom house visit, meaning 1-5 and 1-6 aren't necessary, and the low score on a "New Game+" would then be 560.)
Ah, I didn't think of the save/restart thing (which is why I kept ending up entering 7-1 with a five-digit score). Okay, so if you can get past the pillars at the beginning of 7-1 like I mentioned, then you'll end up getting 1000 from the rocket and 2000 from Birdo in 7-1 (7040 pts.), then in 7-2, you'll get 2000 from the Key Birdo (too bad you can't use a glitch to avoid having to KO that Birdo like in older versions, as it doesn't work here) and 10,000 from Wart (19,040 pts.).
Okay, I've watched it, and I see some other potential ways to improve on that run. I don't know if I'm going to make an attempt at it though. Also, I doubt I'll be trying to low score run The Lost Levels either, but who knows...
There's also New Super Mario Bros. to consider (it can run slow at times when emulated, but that's not an issue for TASing)... and the GBA version of SMB2 has a score counter, unlike the NES/SNES versions, though I'm not sure how interesting a low-score run of that would be. Oh, and YI, but that's been done plenty of times already.
I just tried a low-score run of SMA1, and while it was rather trivial to reach 7-1 with 4040 points, I could not find a way to cross the left wall in the second area of 7-1 without at least one Bob-omb exploding on the cracked floor (for anywhere from 240 to 8000 points depending on what's caught in the explosion). I tried both despawning them and throwing them to the side. I did manage to reach the far right end of that room once without gaining points, though I'm not sure how that would help.
This comment reminds me, if you were really going for lowest possible score to finish the game with, you could suicide all your lives during world 8 to reset your score before Bowser's Castle. I wouldn't really count that as lowering your overall score (any more than saving/continuing to finish SMW with 0 points), though.
Oh, did I do something majorly wrong? Or are you able to avoid having to break that brick in 8-Fort? Or do you know of some other improvement that I'm not aware of?
Okay, forget the stopwatch, as each grass pulled up gives you 10 points, and it's not really of any help. However, by using Luigi, it is possible to power squat jump from the left edge of the pillar to the right of the entry ladder and just barely get onto the tall pillar on the left, and if you jump to the pillar on the right while facing left, you can keep the screen from scrolling far enough for the Bob-ombs to appear. By the way, which route did you take to reach 7-1 with just 4040 points?
Hmm... Well, if you did make it to the far right without scoring anything, you could try pulling up four vegetables inside the house there, and then pull the fifth one outside for a stopwatch, but I forget if that's worth points in this game, and I don't know if the time stop would last long enough to be of any use anyway... (Maybe I should go grab a ROM of SMA1 and try it myself and see what I can come up with...)
Did you know? There appears to be a low score TAS of NSMB already (watch?v=mh08ZeRKIYE, 33890 points). It has some interesting wall-jumping tricks, but I see some obvious improvements-- it gains 100 points per flagpole even when a 1up would save points, and doesn't use fire to skip the 1000/2000 hits on Bowser Jr. Do you have any interest in improving it? Or trying a low score TAS of SMB2j/Lost Levels, for that matter? I think you expressed interest in that in the past, and it's been a while.
Jason Pekonmäki Actually, I needed to stay up top in order to keep the Bob-ombs from blowing up each other or other enemies, which would've gotten me points. (Although, I guess I could've swam under the second ship, which had no Bob-ombs, but that wouldn't have been as interesting as staying up top.)
I have 3 things i wanna say: Does tail-flicking the boom boom give points? Do you get points for fireballing bowser? DO IT WITH 650. I KNOW YOU CAN DO IT
You cannot hurt Boom-Boom with tail wags. If you KO Bowser with fireballs or hammers, you get 100 points. And, I'm not sure if 650 is possible. It would require finding a way to avoid needing to break a brick in 8-Fortress.
+SomeGuy712x but your description implied there was a way, but you were only able to do it once and couldnt do it again... At least that was the IMPLICATION. On the last paragraph
I never actually fully succeeded. If I had, this would've been a 650-point video. I was able to duck-jump through the wall to the upper-right of the H-bricks, but then, I end up in a tiny chamber where I'd have to duck-jump through another wall, but I couldn't get enough speed in that tiny room to be able to do that.
You mean "avoided"? That's what I'm wondering. I'm thinking that duck-jumping into the upper-right corner to clip through walls a couple times would allow me to avoid breaking that brick, but when I was TAS-ing this back then, I was only ever able to succeed at the first clip, and just could not get the second clip to work for some reason.
You mean the fortress? I needed to clear 1-5 and 1-6 afterwards in order to reach the mushroom house there and get a flower to fry Boom Booms with (to avoid getting points for stomping Boom Boom). This way, I wouldn't gain 1000 points from getting a flower during a level (since using an inventory item while on the map doesn't add points).
How could you have gotten 50? ...Unless you unlocked all the paths in world 8 then got a Game Over perhaps, which would reset your score to zero, but if you've already cleared the way, then Bowser's Castle would be the only level you'd need to play from there. However, this low-score run I did here is based off of one credit, with no Game Overs.
@@SomeGuy712x Yeh that basically sums up my strat. XD Unlike most mario games where people go for a low score, this one "punishes" you by reseting your score to zero sooooo yeh. In order to get a flower from the second mushroom house, in order to fry Boom-Booms later on. Fried Boom-Booms don't give points. Also, I needed to get a flower from that mushroom house instead of during a level, because items used on the map don't give points.
