Thanks for the shoutout! Yeah this game really does have a way of forcing points on you in one way or another. I was pretty impressed how you found a way around the 100,000 bonus. Very thorough and informative video. 👍
OK, discovered your 'SM:LL' coinless run some time ago, and it's just now I learn you did the lowest score... It was terrific !! You deserve so much more viewers for that !
there's another infinite 1-up spot in 1-1 that doesn't require you to collect mushroom or break bricks (It's the section with parakoopa right after the first hole) while not collecting mushroom saves costs 400 points in 8-2, it saves 500 points points in 1-1, so not collecting mushroom is better overall edit: this seems to save 800 points in 1-1 because this 1-up spot is weird and seems to gives different amount of points everytime
I don’t see how you could get that Koopa to land on the right step on the staircase for the 1-up trick to be doable. Do you have a clip of that? EDIT: Found it, lol. That’s crazy! I could never get the 1-up trick to work as small Luggy, so I just thought it was impossible. =P
For those of you wondering about the lowest score for World 9, it's only 400 points. 100 for grabbing the bottom of the flagpole in each level. (The fireworks aren't an issue since your coin counter carries over from 8-4 and you already picked up a coin earlier in the run, allowing you to finish each stage with zero seconds left on the clock) These levels are just so baran that hardly anything CAN give you extra points! No wonder why equals peach didn't even bother covering them.
Heheh, I remember hearing about the crouch-swimming trick in Kosmic's videos. Basically, even though you appear to be doing normal full-bodied swimming, the game actually believes you're still crouching, so only your lower half has collision with anything, and you can't throw fireballs.

Actually timing on speedruns ends when touching the axe so if you power off the console before you get the 100k points at the end you can actually finish with 2700 pts.
Idk if this would work or not, but in 8-1 it's possible to clip into an upside-down pipe at the start and enter, but if you do that after warping from 5-2 you'll be sent to the start of 8-1. HOWEVER, if you do that if you enter 8-1 from 7-4, you'll be warped to past the Terrifying Valley of Killthekoopas and before the Death-Defying Gimmepoints Canyon. This loses the 400 from the VoKtk, and also 200 from the 5-2 warpzone coin. However this warp pushes you past the bill forcing you to use the koopa for D-DGpC, adding back 200, so this loses 400 points overall. You can warp to 7-1 from 5-2 by running to the end, which gains no additional points in 5-2 (-200). 7-1 is trivial (+100 for flag). 7-2 may be impossible, idk if Luigi can make the jump to the pipe without a koopa (if not then the route doesn't work), but if he can, then you run into a platform near the end that's really high. No idea if Luigi can make it normally, but if not he could use walljumps to make it (+100 for flag). 7-3 is trivial (+100 for flag). 7-4 can be tricky but with tight movement around enemies you can go through no problem (+50 for 001 timer). Then in 8-1 you can use the wrong warp to skip VoKtk. Finally you pass D-DGpC with the koopa (-400 from VoKtk skip, +200 for D-DGpC koopa, -200 total). This ridiculous route loses 400 points in 5-2 and 8-1, and gains 350 from world 7, meaning that with this route we could get the count from 50k points to 49950 points.
Although I'm in no position to test it, and I might be missing something obvious, there might be a way to collect 125 1ups and cause the underflow glitch without Koopa murder, by exploiting backwards warp zones. Looking into the level layout, this route might be promising: Collect the hidden 1up in 1-1, as well as one of the two 1ups before the falling platforms in 1-2 (I strongly doubt it is possible to collect both, as revealing the second one would despawn the first), and then warp to world 2, collect the hidden 1up in 2-1, wall jump at the section with the two hidden coins in 2-2, be careful of the final coin in 2-3, reach 3-1 and finally warp back to 1-1. World 2 seems rather forgiving with its design (aside for the aforementioned wall-jump), so it might be possible to complete it perfectly with only 350 points. If that's the case, you can essentially buy 3 1ups for 450 points (including the 100 points from 1-1). The coin at the beginning is only collected once, so it doesn't add up. If you do this 40 times, you'll end up back in world 1-1, with 18000 points (+200 for the first coin) and 123 lives. Collect five more lives in 1-1, 1-2, 4-1, 5-2 and 8-1 (if not all are possible, do one extra trip and pay 450 more points) and you will have 128, which should trigger the overflow. Of course, all of this relies on world 2 actually being perfect, of which i'm not sure about, as well as all the 1ups being possible to collect without additional points. There's also the issue of hidden 1ups not spawning if you don't have enough coins from the previous world -3, but if I remember correctly, coming from warps, that is not an issue.
In 3-1 there's another 1up. Although it's directly above a parakoopa, it looks promising to get no koopa bounce. If so, that allows for 4 1ups per trip at 450 points, so we can reach 123 lives in only 13700 points over 30 trips rather than 18200 in 40. There is also another 1up in 5-1 that requires either walljumps, wall clips, or a cobination of the two to get without points, but it is possible. This 5-1 1up is useless unless a route I came up with (that's an alt of mine lol), which uses world 7 and loses 50 points over warping to 8-1, is possible, since in 7-1 we can get another 1up. If the world 7 route works, then we can alter the 30th 1up route to just get the 1up in 1-1 and then warp to 3-1 (this requires collecting an unavoidable coin and makes it impossible to get the 1-2 (and 2-1) 1up, which is why 7-1 must be possible for the 5-1 1up to matter). This would lower the point count of the last trip from 450 to 300, making for 13550 points. Unfortunately, using the 1up mushroom route instead of the koopa 1up route means we won't be big in 8-2, so we'll have to do something else. It's hard to tell but in 8-2 when the vine was hit point-less, it looks like it was done with walking speed, which gives you smaller jumps. If you instead mange to get running speed you can jump a bit higher, which may or may not be enough for small Luigi, I'm not sure. If it's enough, the way to get it to work is to scroll the screen far enough to the right so that the vine block is on the edge, get a running jump to the block, and then use the edge of the screen to recoil back to the ground. Again, I'm not sure if this route would work but if it does, then we can complete 8-2 as small Luigi without stomping the koopa. Assuming that the 30 trip 1up route, world 7 route, and 8-2 small luigi all work, we can have a 15500 point numbered world run and a 40100 point number+letter world run.
The 1up in 3-1 is past the warp zone, so if it is collected, you cannot go back to world 1 for another iteration. And an hypothetical route to world 7 would not cost 50 extra points, but at least 200. So it could be worth it only if it helped save a cycle. But with the 1ups in 1-1, 1-2, 4-1, 5-1, 5-2, 7-1 and 8-1, you would still need to have 121 lives, or collect 118 1ups, for which 39 cycles are still not enough. On that note, it might be possible to collect both 1ups in 1-2 as Super Mario, by breaking a brick block and have them fall. That costs 50 extra points per cycle, and +1000-400 for the Super Mushroom, but requires 30 cycles, for a total of 15600. Even then, with the 1up in 7-1, you would still be 1 life short of making it in 29. I don't think it would be possibile to warp to world 3 after collecting those 2 1ups, but that would also be an improvement. Finally, there might be an ultimate improvement, which would be to collect both 1ups in 1-2 as small Mario. It may just be possible (although most likely TAS/Niftski only) by clipping through the bricks earlier in order to put Mario at the right edge of the screen, potentially allowing him to open the first 1up, hit it from below with an empty block to push it backwards, collect it while it falls on the pipe, collect the second 1up, by letting it fall after the pits as intended, and then die. +1 life, 0 points, no warp zone shenanigans needed.
You can reach the 3-1 warpzone by bouncing off the green spring with running speed and going over the flag (the screen doesn't stop scrolling). Also when I said world 7 loses 50 I meant that using world 7 would allow you to finish the game with 50 less points than warping to 8 due to a warpless exclusive wrong warp in 8-1 (Idk what the best way to word that is for low score). Also, great idea in 1-2 for pushing Mario/Luigi to the side to get the 2 1ups and then die for +1 life overall, that's genius! That should be totally possible to do, and with that you just removed all of the cycle nonsense and now we can gain 125 lives in 0 points, bringing the numbered worlds down to just 2250 points! (and also number+letter down to 26850; the numbers could be up to 2700/27300 if world 7 and 8-2 strats don't work)
@@you41041 Oh right, I forgot the 3-1 warp zone is also accessible from after the flagpole, my bad. And I'm not super familiar with wrong warps in LL, so I didn't look into those. I'd really like to see a TAS of the 1-2 strat. Maybe I'll try asking Kosmic, I know he loves stuff like this. I'll comment here again if that ever happens.
So getting the lowest score possible the way I describe it here, if you take any warp pipes you lose access to World 9, and even if you made it there it loops forever until you die, not to mention you’ve already beaten the game by that point
